Luke Shaw | Match Discussion Thread 2023/24

Surprised at that, hope I don't have MUTV on my case

I won't ask you if you watched Shaw sleeping on the pitch time and time again ....

I needed to sign in to my account to watch the video.

I did not watch it. I did see some clips from an alternative commentary account I follow on twitter suggesting that Shaw may have been distracted by the Domino's Pizza sign on one of the stands which made me chuckle.

The go Razzmatazz bit gets me every time.

The Utd fans need to get a Garnacho chant going to that Alejandro song as well.

If I'd uploaded one of those alternative MUTV videos my PM inbox would be full with Mods telling me we don't allow such videos, too many 'f' words and the 'c' word is a definite no-no, off to the naughty step you go, you should know where it is now!

Only a basic one from the app not a paid up member for the club or MUTV

As I said I didn't think it would work for those that didn't have some access, and I was surprised when I logged-out of my MUTV account the video was still available to me on this forum, was more hoping that expecting others could view it.

Every day is a learning day.

One of the worst players to lose for a prolonged period of time along with Martinez. He is so important to this team, would be a huge loss.

I do wonder if our lack of options which includes Malacia out meant ETH perhaps rushed him back too soon instead of easing him back.

We had options, just EtH decided to remove two of them, twas always a gamble.

The rumours were seemingly true.

I think maybe it's about time to look at replacing Shaw. I cant imagine his injury problems are going to improve.

Good player when fit though

Yep very difficult situation for the club now they probably need to bring in a new left back this summer but the two they have are unlikely to leave. I think if they had much faith in Fernandez he'd have stayed after being recalled from loan the fact Benfica have that option to buy suggests they're looking to move him on.

Shaw I'm sure would have plenty of takers but he's not going to be offered the sort of deal he has at Utd with his injury problem, similar story with Malacia.

I do think Utd have to look at how they've managed these injuries this season have they rushed them back to soon.

Continued his rehab with the England squad at St George’s Park.

“I thought Ben defended really well and it was an important game for him. I don’t want to kill Ben. But Luke’s one of the best left-backs in world football, frankly.”

Gareth back on the booze ....

Got to talk up the players he'll be managing next season hasn't he.

When he's 100% on his game there are few better but how often we see that due to a combination of injury/form is the issue.

Left back does seem to be a position where there are very few stand out players.

I had hoped he was just going to be a Giggs, and be injured for the first part of his career. Apparently not. It is getting to the point where it's nearly enough for me tbh. Next season is the time to get some back up there, either a potential star or buy someone proven. That posistion is just a head ache right now, and it cannot happen again like this next year.

Think with his contract he's someone who's going to be around for the long term not many clubs can afford to buy him and with his injury issues they're likely to look elsewhere. It looked like he'd turned a bit of a corner with the injuries but in the last 2 seasons they've returned.

They need a competent deputy which it looked like we'd found with Malacia but he's been out all season as well.

I don't see them buying another left back unless one of them leaves.

I feel like both cannot be trusted, therefore I would definitely buy a LB.

We don't even know what player will return in Malacia. Some injuries can make a great player into an average one, and Luke Shaw will definitely start to go downhill sharpish at some point after all he's been through.

You can't really have 3 specialist left backs in a squad so it'll need to be 1 in 1 out and if neither of them are going anywhere it's hard to bring someone in.

Shaw I think probably needs to be managed through a season a bit better than he has been this season, strikes me as a lad who's willing to risk it to play and that has backfired on him this season.

Why can't we have three left-backs?

That's just what you think.

25 man squads are one reason, then there's limits on number of foreign players within that, FFP/PSR calculations in terms of transfer spending/wages, squad harmony is another you don't want a guy who never plays around the first team all the time.

It's a specialist position you are rarely going to play 2 left backs in 1 game unless you buy a player who's flexible and plays a number of positions. What if we buy a third left back then Shaw has a season where he barely misses a game?

Given all the work that is required with this squad I THINK they will probably look for a left footed centre back this summer that can 1 cover Martinez but 2 could also slot in as a left back if they have another injury crisis. If a fully back is coming this summer I reckon it'll be a right back as I do think AWB is going to leave this summer.

It's funny, England have currently got 4/5 right-backs who could play for any team in the World, but only one left-back, and Chilwell can't stay fit ....
