Luke Shaw | Match Discussion Thread 2023/24

He's having a dubious season for sure. If you look at your own chart though you will see the previous three seasons have been between good and very good for him. I think that is enough to cement a place in our sqaud. He's entering his best years or is in them, so I am firmly confident that keeping him is the best option.

If he was prepared to take a 25% drop on his current wages I wouldn't have any problem him staying on for the next 4 or 5 years as a squad player who could provide cover at left-back and left centre-back, no problems at all with that, him agreeing to it is another matter.

Well you need to get out more then. Nonsense, one of my first heroes at United was Gordon Hill, I was devastated when Dave Sexton(bloody Cockney!) sold him on, loved Teddy Sheringham, Paul Ince until his dalliance with Liverpool, could go on .....

Said numerous times(on this forum)when he's fit and in-form he has few equals carrying the ball from box to box, my issue with him has always been he's shit defensively(he must be a friggin nightmare for the LCB to play alongside because he never commits, never), and his end product in the final-third is shocking.

He’s excellent defensively you just have a vendetta against him. Unfortunately you don’t have the same vendetta against McT and how poor he is defensively for a central midfielder.

There are very few left backs that can step in and play CB to the level Shaw does. The fact you think he’s poor defensively when he’s proven numerous times he isn’t and shown it whilst playing centre back shows it just a vendetta.

As for when carrying the ball forward, tactically it’s nothing to do with that. It’s to do with the fact he’ll make the selfless run with intent (which is the key part) outside not expecting the ball back but a defender has to go with which creates the space in other areas which none of the rest of our players we put at left back do.

You should note the different in our goals scored with an without Shaw in the team

There isn’t a better left back in the country. (Though I’m sure you’ll say Robertson because of his place of birth. A guy that can’t get his place back over a young CB)

Technically all players are just squad players. It's the job of the manager to provide players competiton by signing new blood to push each person into playing their best. I don't think he has had that, and it's maybe the missing ingredient to take him to the next level. I don't think he needs to take a pay cut - he's been providing us a good service for many years. I'm struggling to understand your hate for him at this point. Most United fans actually really like him.

Oh don't you start, I don't hate Luke Shaw, struggling to think of any player that has played for United in the last 55+ years that I've hated, disliked maybe but that's always been off the pitch stuff.

And a player that has been paid circa £100,000 a week for nearly a decade a good chunk that he's been unavailable shouldn't really need somebody to come in to motivate them to get their arse in gear when their form dips. He should self motivate, well he would if he had pride wearing the shirt.

I just don't rate him as highly as some that's all.

I do agree on players motivation - they shouldn't need it, but with people having different personalities it just gurantees you should get the best out of your squad. Personally I wouldn't need that extra push, I've always played my football at the maximum and I don't really understand it either. I guess players become settled in knowing they'll start regardeless and the form and effort dips a bit. Something like that.

Fair enough though, you're entitled to your opinion on him.

Not sure I am any more LOL

Well you are as far as I'm concerned.

Ah you’ve found a buddy who has the same strange dislike of Shaw. Also why did that guy go to the trouble of listing every little thing Shaw did? Clearly too much time on his hands.

I think if you wrote down every mistake/negative any player made during a match then it would be as long of a list.

He’s a fantastic defender but I’m not going to bother explaining why because you have it set in your mind that he isn’t. You’re entitled to your opinion but opinions can be very wrong and this is such case.

Ffs, for the umpteenth time .... last season when he was in a good run of form I gave Shaw 8/10 in consecutive games, and don't forget this is on a forum where some poster give some of our players 1/10, 2/10 or 3/10, plus in #100 above I posted Said numerous times(on this forum)when he's fit and in-form he has few equals carrying the ball from box to box,

Dislike

And on the listing, welcome to modern day PL football, do you not think some sad sap will be doing the same for every player?

You said he’s s*** defensively, so after that you lost all credibility on your opinion of Shaw’s credentials.

Huh, Dalot has started half a dozen or more games at left-back, and until January we also had Reguilón.

So it's not as though we/EtH has been flogging him. He's just injury-prone because he's not disciplined enough to stay fit.

There was a run after his first injury where he started 8 games in a row as we were down to the bare bones again and in the 8th game he went off injured. This was a game every 3-4 days after 3 months out. That is why this time I don’t think any risks are being taken.

I think there were certainly questions about his off field life early in his career when he was living with his mates in Manchester but he’s settled down with a family now. You hear nothing about him off the pitch and when he plays he looks one of the fittest out there so I’d say he’s learned those lessons now and takes care of himself.

It's funny, nearly every man and his dog says AWB is s*** when he gets into attacking areas yet the season Shaw was getting touted as the best LB in the world by some of our fans AWB scored more goals and had more assists than him, you really couldn't make it up.

Only at United!

You're boring @SuperRash, go and annoy somebody else, and take @IDFD with you. TIA

Wow are you foolishly trying to imply AWB is better going forward than Shaw?

I know what’s happened. You’ve watched Shaw for his early career cast your opinion in stone and failed to adapt that opinion with his improvement because you feel you can never be wrong on a player so can’t adjust. Hence still stupidly believing he doesn’t keep himself in shape and isn’t professional about it.

Respectfully disagree, at times he looked cooked in the warm up, and I know a lot of players have had problems with the tight socks this season but when he rolls them down before the game he's messing with his own head, that's the look of a player desperate to catch the eye of his Manager to take him off and don't get me started on his shocking efforts at getting back in when he's caught up-field, I can walk quicker!

That’s fair if you think I’m boring, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But you have blinkers on about Shaw and just dislike the guy. However when someone goes against one of your favourites like McT you throw a hissy fit. Shaw is twice the player McT is but some are absolved from criticism in your eyes I guess.

That’s my last take on the subject because you will no doubt come back with some smart ass reply.

Are you purposely being obtuse. If I dislike the guy so much why the feck would I mark him 8 out of 10 in back to back games. Rhetorical x2

And stop twisting what I've said previously, at no time have I ever said Scott is a great player, or should be a guaranteed starter, what I have said is he is a very useful squad player, and we need them, and I've said that because it's true.

You have to imagine they won't be risking him again they need to give him a bit of time off to sort this problem out.

What, his problem defending properly, or his constant injuries??

I'd give him a bit of a pass yesterday (i haven't really seen what he did wrong other than a bit of a slow reaction on the goal).

Looks to me like he's tried to get himself on the pitch without being fully fit and paid the price.

The goal wasn't a surprise, he'd had a nightmare 8 minutes and they were definitely targeting him. Maybe he shouldn't have started.

His injuries are proving a real problem, worse than Varane?

What on earth has happened to Malacia.

Probably a position we need to look at

The highlights made it look like they scored with their first attack of the game.

What the 03:12 minute highlights on Sky where they cried for Casemiro to be sent-off for 2 minutes?

MOTD 2 highlights.

First half think they showed the two Utd goals plus a Rashford shot then it was the Luton goal then what looked like attack after attack from them as Utd just about clung on to the lead.
