Luke Shaw | Match Discussion Thread 2023/24

Not sure why but I reckon if Shaw was an animal he'd be a shetland pony.

Huh, thought Shetland ponies were reliable and kept going ....

And back to Shergar, not sure I'll be able to look at Shaw now and not think Pedigree Chump

25 man squads are one reason, then there's limits on number of foreign players within that, FFP/PSR calculations in terms of transfer spending/wages, squad harmony is another you don't want a guy who never plays around the first team all the time.

It's a specialist position you are rarely going to play 2 left backs in 1 game unless you buy a player who's flexible and plays a number of positions. What if we buy a third left back then Shaw has a season where he barely misses a game?

Given all the work that is required with this squad I THINK they will probably look for a left footed centre back this summer that can 1 cover Martinez but 2 could also slot in as a left back if they have another injury crisis. If a fully back is coming this summer I reckon it'll be a right back as I do think AWB is going to leave this summer.
I understand the general rules for squads. I know what optimal is and how things should be done, but there are always exceptions to the rules. You are almost saying we must cripple ourselves for next season and take a risk on one them being fit, when they are proving the exact opposite is almost a certainty. If we are unable to get rid of either, by selling them or loaning and recouping funds that way the only other safe option is to buy another. I'm pretty certain SJR has already said as much.

It won't be an excuse come this time next year if we are in the same situation, everyone will be saying you had this information one year ago. Who is to blame? They're then going to tell people that it was because we couldn't sign a third left back in a problem position because of squad structure? No. it wouldn't be acceptable. A new LB is needed 100%, regardeless of what is to be done with the other two. It is easily the most problematic position for us right now.

So stating the Fm setup to me is not a point it's stupid. You do what you need to do based upon your needs. If that does mean selling a LB once we have acquired another so be it - but make no mistake, the priority is identifying one and buying him.

My point is the finances are tight regardless of the SJR investment Utd have got to be smart with how they spend this summer and we've seen this year the PL aren't shy in dishing out points deductions if you don't comply with the rules.

If money was no object of course we could bring in another left back and have 3 but we aren't in that situation at the moment, especially when you factor in Dalot and Martinez could both play left back in an emergency. That is 4 players in the senior squad that can play left back.

To me we probably have to gamble next season at left back and hope for the best as there are other areas that have to be addressed first.

Guess we'll see who's right in coming months.

Well hopefully we're both right you get another left back and I get a right back, centre back, couple of centre mids, a right winger and a striker.

Deal?

Sure you don't want the bankers offer? It's cash. ;p

If he's not fit for this weekend then it's a huge gamble to even think about starting him in the cup final.

Even having him on the bench would be a worry because if you put him on there's no guarantee that he won't get injured again.

Small chance of returning from injury and not match fit against City, really?
You do have to wonder at the wisdom of ETHs coaching ability.

I mean those comments are basically him ruling him out of the cup final barring some sort of miracle recovery.

Probably tried his FA Cup Final suit on and thought nah me arse looks big in that and called time on the season.

Be interested to see if he makes the England squad

Saw something the other day, he's been at the club 11 seasons, his injuries add up to six full seasons
