Lisandro Martinez | Match Discussion Thread 2023/24

Maguire is widely known to be a hugely inflated fee that sticks out like a sore thumb. Leicester sold from a position of strength as they locked him down to a long contract and had owners with deep pockets that didn't need money. Utd paid a massive premium and everyone knows it and fingers crossed the new crowd won't be as stupid as the previous lot to pay the price, if you believe the rumours City walked away when they offered 60m and were told 80m or no deal.

Everton did well to tie Branthwaite down to a new contract but I reckon Everton's financial woes may force them to sell. If they dig their heels in I don't see anyone paying a fortune for the lad as he's way to unproven to pay over the odds.

Braithewaite would be an amazing signing. Has everything about him.

Could we use Maguire as bait in the deal. Maguire and £40-50m

I think you might be wrong. People will pay a lot for potential, we have many times. What if he's the next Rio, or as good as Vidic in years to come? Wouldn't that be worth the £100m? I gurantee you that's what Everton will be telling any potential suitor. They don't need to sell any time soon. For me, he has everything and the world can see it. The only thing that happens from here on out is his price rises and more people become interested - raising the price again probably.

What if he isn't? What if he's the next Maguire? Or the next Phil Jones? Remember the hype around him as a young defender.

They might be saying it but someone has to believe it, anyone willing to pay that money would be a complete fool.

There have been so many hyped up as the next this and the next that Rio went for a record fee after 3 or 4 seasons of proving his ability with West Ham and Leeds, same with the likes of Rice and Grealish.

I don't see how his price can go up when you are already suggesting they want a world record fee.

The price can go up on anything, the record fee can simply increase from £100m to £150m. It all depends on how highly they value him.

What if this, what if that, doesn't matter. If you want the player pay the money. It's what they'll say.

But Everton do have to sell soon. They’ve already had a first 10 point deduction. On the verge of the second.

I think we need to wait and see just what the punishment is exactly and what actual repercussions it has. I don't think it will be impossible for them to escape releagtion even with another -10. If you did it today, that would put them rock bottom, but only 11 points behind Luton, with 15 games to play. The great escape? It's possible.

No it is the opposite the fee depends on what someone is willing to pay, I can say anyone is worth £100m or £200m but until someone actually pays that it's just a number.

A deal only happens when a buyer and a seller agree on a price. If Everton dig in and say it's £100m or no deal you simply walk away and find someone who fits in your budget.

To bring it back on topic slightly from what I've seen of this kid he looks the part but not sure he'd be the ideal partner for Martinez because it would leave us with two left footers at centre back.

If you can't beat 'em, join ''em

Branthwaite is right-footed, and still got a lot to learn, not sure the Old Trafford glare is right for him just yet, and any fee over £50m would be stupidity, just setting him up for a fall.

Leave him where he is for now. See if he steps up to International football and adapts to that level, if he does then you start looking at offering Maguire type figures for him.

No it isn't the opposite. If you have something of value you can decide the price. It's yours. Simple as that. You may never get that price, but it's still yours to decide.

He’s joining up with the Argentina squad during the international break as he continues his recovery.

Could be back after the international break.

this irritates me, we pay your wage, stay in Manchester and recover to play in the last games.

I imagine the training sessions with Argentina will be more intense as most of our first team will be away on international duty and they're playing world cup qualifiers rather than friendlies.

There might even be a chance for him to get a run out in the second game if he's ready.

Also, a chance for him to travel home and do a bit of rehab in a different environment which can be a big mental boost for a player.

Could also and rush him into playing and the last time that happened it went horribly wrong.
Not ready for United but ok for Argies,

Yeah, very odd. He isn't at 100% so he should go nowhere. It's all fine saying he might get some game time, but what if he just gets injured again. It's common knowledge these international coaches don't care about pushing players as they don't have to deal with the fall out when it all goes wrong, they just send the player back injured.

I don’t think he starts for them so doubt they’ll take chances with him.

He wasn’t rushed back at all he had a failed diagnosis on his surgery. The doctors failed to spot a fracture that was hidden by a plate in his foot so when he returned he still had pain and had to go for further surgery.

His most recent injury was a contact injury because a player fell on him awkwardly.

Ok Mr pedant a failed diagnosis whatever … rushed back was reason I read at the time they should have done a better job and made sure he was 100% ready he’s a professional athlete not a Blackpool donkey, the club shouldn’t have allowed him to go it’s a joke It’s no wonder the club is in such a mess, the medical staff must be the worst in the PL.

No problem him going, he won't be considered for match-play, he'll be doing light exercises away from the main group probably but spending some quality downtime with his mates.

Getting fit for his club is more important - not fun time with the lads miles across the world. He should be surrounded in love and feel at home right where he is. If not, something is very wrong.

It’s all fine Martinez is flying half way round the world to see his mates he doesn’t have any in Manchester, meanwhile our completely useless medical team are checking their tarot cards to asses his fitness..o_O

There's nothing he can do training at Carrington which will resemble Man City's popular side for 10 days that he can't do training with the World Champions most likely in warmer climes which will aid his recovery.

And I doubt he'll be traveling Hair Lungis. It'll be Luxury all the way.

He's got no business being there IMO. He's not 100% fit and international football is arguably more competitive than anything else. So I would have told him he's going nowhere.

Don't know what you think it is, a holiday?

What, and risk 'losing' the player?

South Americans in particular make massive sacrifices to move to Europe at a young age, okay the perks are great but you are still leaving family and friends behind, why begrudge him going 'home' for a few days when he gets a rare chance? He might have a sick relative he might otherwise not been able to see again, who knows ....

And if the club are happy why should anybody care?

It's very unprofessional, that's why I care.

If Martinez wants to visit relatives the club can and will have made that happen on a suitable occasion.

Behave yourself, if he'd just buggered off without telling the club, yes, he didn't, and as far as we know the club are okay with it.

It's not as though he's fit to play against Liverpool on Sunday but much preferred to go abseiling and bungee-jumping in the Andes with his Argie chums is it - let it go.

I'll happily let it go. Said my bit.

However, he'll no doubt have plenty of "Argie chum time" soon enough. He'll be injured again going from this level of stupidity, unlocking all the holiday delights you want him to have.

I’m guessing for those not selected for international next week will be pretty quiet at Carrington in fact I’d be surprised if there’s any planned training sessions at all. Ten Hag and his coaches are probably having a week off as most club managers will during international breaks.

Instead he will be training with top players as he gets his sharpness back.

I‘d much rather he be doing that than just banging in hours in the gym at Carrington with Wan-Bissaka and Mount.

I think it’s just one of those seasons where the whole defence seems to just pick up injury after injury. I can’t remember last season being anywhere near as bad, so the over training comment is just a fanciful reason for the ETH doubters.

You simply do not get those kind of injuries in training unless there is something wrong with the regime. Maybe the specialists in physical training is simply not up to the mark?
