Lisandro Martinez | Match Discussion Thread 2023/24

Martinez was good and it’s great to have him back but I thought Hojlund was excellent. We scored 4 conceded 3 find it hard to think a CB was our best player.

Hojlund worked hard for everything, provided an assist got a goal. Should have had their keeper sent off with his harrying but was ignored he forced him in to hand balling it outside the box.

Back to his best. Love his "get outta the way, it's my ball" when he's giving away 5-7" and a couple of stones.

Concerning he was on the bench having the foot that kept him out for so long, iced.

Hopefully nothing too serious. Just looked like he landed a little awkwardly on the knee and could have been a jar or overextension. But the knee is so fragile that it could be something more serious but really hope not.

He really is pivotal to how we play and would be a huge blow with a little bit of momentum building.

Have to at least find another left footed centre half now. He might not need replaced entirely, but he needs at minimum a back up, we can't keep waiting for him to be fit, it might never happen.

Defensively there’s little between Martinez and Varane but the difference between quality and composure on the ball is day and night.

The way they’re talking sounds like season over for the poor guy.

Rotten luck and such a freak injury.

Really? What a kick in the teeth that is.

Yeah Ten Hag said it didn’t look good but they will need to get scans done to fully assess it, the posts on social media make me fear the worst. Fingers crossed it’s not as bad as first feared.

Only 3 months of the season left even if he avoids surgery, hard to see a knee injury healing that quickly.

Would be a real shame as he’s a class act.

Hope he`s ok obviously he`s been good since returning, if not Kambwala should get more game time.

Just hope it's nothing serious always thought lisandro is the player we've missed most not just his defending he's also a leader and his distribution is second to none we look like a different team when he's in there.

Was expecting way worse than that. Very good news. He still must stop picking up all sorts of injuries though. Those types of players are never of any use. Hope this will be the end of it all.

Think it's way to early to suggest he's injury prone.

He's had 2 injuries since being at Utd one took longer to come back from because the first round of surgery didn't fix it and now a contact injury caused by a freak accident.

Fingers crossed the rehab goes well and he's back for the final part of the season.

This is his third injury, in a sustained time periord. I think it's very much the case he's injury prone.

Assume you are counting the injury from the end of last season and the start of this season as different injuries?

They were actually the same the surgery he had after that foot injury failed and the X-rays that cleared his return to training didn't spot that part of the surgery failed. So when he tried to train and play he was still in a lot of pain. Further X-rays revealed that part of the injury didn't heal and needed further surgery.

Also, if I crash my car into you does that make you accident prone?

You can't really be putting blame on Martinez for a guy falling on his knee and damaging his ligaments?

It's a contact sport, people will land on you. I've seen vicious challenges go in on players and they get back up. It's all about what the person is made of. Martinez is made of glass.

A lot of the time it depends on how they hit you.

We've all seen the horror tackle but if your leg isn't planted most of the time you are fine then we've seen the complete opposite where if your leg is planted and taking your body weight even something fairly tame can cause major damage.

Any player in the exact same situation would be very lucky to avoid a serious knee injury if that happened to them, just very unlucky.

Time will tell. If he comes back from this injury and picks up something else then it's time to worry. For now I'm calling him injury prone until he proves to me that he can play for longer than 2 games.

I'd stay positive on it looking at his history he only had 1 serious injury at Ajax which kept him out for 2 months.

Just highlights the need for new centre back signings in the summer to me.

I expect 3 will leave this summer and that will require two quality replacements to come in ideally one for the left and one for the right.

Yeah, I definitely want to stay positive on it - he's an excellent CB. I'm hoping after this one [injury] he can get a good run in the team.

I'd agree on the recruitment - minimum of 2 more required. I feel like Varane won't survive 100%. That leaves competition needed for Maguire and Martinez. Although I'm not 100% sure what he'll do with Maguire. He can be a bit dodgy sometimes, but I still think he's worth one more season.

I think Maguire will go to raise cash plus, he’s on big wages and I think he wants to be a starter.
Varane and Evans are out of contract and I think both will they.
They gave Lindelof a new deal so I think they’ll be looking at him being the right sided backup

I think they’ll be planning to bring in a new young right sided centre back as a starter and a deputy for Martinez on the left.

The Athletic also reporting it as 8 weeks.

games he’s likely to miss

Villa (a), Luton (a), Fulham (h), FA Cup 5th Round (a), City (a), Everton (h), sheff Utd (h), Brentford (a).

Can't Maguire be a starter? A lot of our wins have come when he has been playing. That for me is a pretty big indicator he's doing something right. The wages don't matter if he keeps fit and performing, unlike some other certain person. Stop worrying about the money all the time - we can afford it if the player is doing well.

I think it's tough to pin point any players winning record this season because there's been so much change in the team from game to game. Maguire is much improved this season but I still don't think he's a starter and the issues he has with speed are only going to get worse with age. Looking at the games he's started only 1 has been against sides in the top half.

I just don't see him as a starter going forward I want to see us build a younger partnership that can grow together, Maguire is 31 this summer and going into the final year of his contract. So it's either sell, let him stay and go for a free next summer or offer him a new deal to extend and basically see out his career at Utd. There might be a 1 year option to extend his contract to 2026 if they need to.

Maguire is having a good season but Utd are in such a big hole financially that they've got to make big decisions with that squad. They have to generate money from somewhere.

So it just doesn't matter as far as you are concerned? Playing good football and being part of winning teams isn't enough. Is there better than Maguire out there? Yes... but how much will it cost in a new transfer fee alone? Then there is wages. We always get served when buying players, so if you want Branthwaite for example, that's £100m easy. We already have Maguire.

I want to see Utd build a new team that means moving on from some of the players who've been around for a while now and not really lived up to their own transfer fees. I'd have happily sold him last summer as long as he was replaced. He's also a player other clubs might actually want to buy.

Maguire has been here for 4 years I think we all know he's not quite at the very top level, he's over 30, he's starting to pick up injuries, he's only going to get slower so it's time to think about replacing him.

You are just plucking numbers out the air last summer they could have signed Van De Ven for 40m, a few years ago they could have got Konate for a similar fee, the two lads at Arsenal both cost less than 30m. There are quality players out there if you look in the right places and find players with low release clauses in their contracts.

There is no way Everton will get that for Branthwaite as no club will pay that. Their finances are worse than ours and Utd should exploit that to get the best deal they can if they decide he's the one they want.

Don't think I am plucking numbers out of anywhere. Maguire cost £80m some time ago. Branthwaite is younger, and inflation will easily bring that number to £100m. They'll sell all that potential nonsene and so many great years of service.

As for building a new team - can we please do it without looking like a bunch of twats? Just hoy the ones we don't need away, or get them gone cause they want wages for being good. We could try treating them better and see if that helps their performances or even decide against a sale if an improvement has been made [Maguire].
