Luke Shaw | Match Discussion thread 2022/23

There's the Mourinho way and then there's the EtH way, keeping as many of your players onside till you replace them, i'll leave it at that.

Liability again, but let's cut him some slack because he's had a few good games, it happens to the best occasionally don't you know.

Sounds like you’ve just got a genuine dislike for Shaw?

Not one of his better games but he still played decently and wasn’t a liability for me.

Not sure i'd have given him back to back 8/10's just before the World Cup if I disliked him and that's easily checkable, I just call it as I see it.

And on yesterday his passing was sloppy at times(mind he wasn't alone on that), and he gave away the late freekick with a clumsy tackle which he didn't need to make, and positionally at times no comment.

I just think it's my frustration with him, he's got everything, or nearly everything needed to be one of the best fullbacks to have ever played for United but he just doesn't seem to want it enough. He just seems content to do enough to stay in the team.

Definitely. Needed to stay tight on Saka and have somebody cover the channel behind him.

You can’t go one vs one on Saka our midfield was poor today at getting over and stopping Saka cutting inside.

Arsenal’s midfield made sure Rashford couldnt get one vs one

Been saying it for years, he NEVER get's out to his man, if you get beat by a brilliant piece of skill good on the lad that's done you, and you hope your teammates bail you out, he just goes half'n'half which allows his direct opponent to get the upper hand, time after time, after time.

Either go all the way out, or drop all the way back, it's simple! 12 year old fullbacks are taught that.

Another Tellytubby wannabee performance from Shaw, the sooner EtH puts him out to grass the better.

I don't think he's quite back to his very best which was probably 2 seasons ago when the team finished second and he was also excellent at the euros that summer but he's much improved from last season.

To me Malacia looks like a solid deputy but not sure he's good enough yet to take the starting spot off Shaw.

There's a big decision to be made on Shaw he's only got 12 months left on his contract at the end of this season so the club need to decide is he worth a new deal or do they look to sell him and replace him.

Gut feeling is they'll keep him as long as he's not demanding outrageous money.

The thing with Shaw is even at his very best there are still obvious flaws in his game, and he's made no effort to improve those areas of his game, and it's not as though he hasn't had more than his fair share of downtime to work on them.

If he's happy to stay around on reduced wages as backup to Martinez and Malacia going forward he'll be a capable squad option, but if he asks for a sizeable increase he should be moved on, and sharpish.

I guess it comes down to how many are actually better than him? He isn’t perfect but who would you say is the number 1 left back in the world right now? I hate to say it but in the last few years it’s probably Robertson you trust him on and off the ball but even this season he’s taken a step backwards and not looked the same.

Shaw isn’t going to take a pay cut but equally he shouldn’t get a massive bump up and that’s the issue. I don’t see him as a backup to Malacia i think he’s a better player but it’s not a huge gap.

The internet suggests he’s on 150k a week if he left he isn’t topping that anywhere else, you probably have to give him a bit of a bump 175k a week on a 3 year deal with an option but you probably can’t go much more than that.

Positionally every other left-back in the PL is better than him, what he does have in his favour is very few if any carry the ball from box to box as well as he does. And with EtH wanting his FB's to narrow down and play in midfield goes against him as well as Malacia is far superior to Shaw when he's in midfield, even AWB on the right seems to have taken to it better than Shaw.

My guess is he'll end up at somewhere like Spurs on similar wages to his current deal and play primarily as a LCB, and I can see him doing well there(club/position)

If Shaw's positioning is so obviously poor, why isn't ETH doing something about it? The manager has shown that it's his way or the highway.

Sure it's not all in your head, Justin?

Having watched recordings of all United's matches from last season who was EtH's first signing? Yep a left-back.

There have been enough people of standing in the game who have pointed out his faults defensively, guess it helps if you know what you're looking for/at I suppose.

Yet ETH trusted his defensive skills in a Manchester derby against the best striker in the league? And ETH sees him everyday in training so Shaw must be doing something right.

Signing a left back is irrelevant, Malacia was always brought in as a back-up to Shaw.

EtH loves his leftie in central defence and with Martinez not available to start he had no option but to play Shaw there really, with the bonus being it kept him(Shaw) away from Mahrez who more than most would have exposed his shall we say hesitancy at fullback.

If he just wanted a backup he'd have gone with Telles and Williams.

You don’t just put someone in defence because he’s left footed. He had options beyond playing Shaw there. If he didn’t rate his defensive abilities he would have had him nowhere near Haaland. And he actually had Haaland in his pocket all game. Would ETH have played Malacia as a centre half because he’s left footed? Of course he wouldn’t.

The fact Shaw is six foot, has the bulk and the pace would have come into EtH's thinking, and not his reading of the game defensively.

We'll never know, if Shaw had not available he might have done, as he's not scared off putting a short-arse in there is he.

Haaland in his pocket

You do know who Luke Shaw is, right? Slicked hair? Wears the #23 shirt? Generally bosses the left side? No? Didn't think so.
