Was going to say wasn't he off to Arsenal yesterday?

Ajax having a clear out this summer.

Haller off to Dortmund according to reports in Germany.

Verweij is a very good source, so this one could have some legs.

Lets wait and see two clubs being linked that quickly sounds a bit fishy.

A left footed centre back would be handy with all the current ones being right footed.

Can't say I know anything about him looks a bit on the short side for a centre back at 5ft 9

I think the press are just adding 2 + 2 and they could be getting 4 but they could be getting 5. It's an easy obvious link to make. A former ETH player at a position where United are apparently looking at the market and just after Timber has apparently decided to stay put.

Reports saying we are going to challenge Arsenals bid.

Could be agent generating more money chat.

But I do think we will sign a CB

Think we do need to find if we're going for one is a left footed centre back which this guy is.

Given how scatter gun everything is at the moment not sure who we are actually in for.

Yeah, seem to be in for everyone. Apart from De Ligt. Who I would actually love to get.

I guess we are getting close to rebranding as Ajax 2019

De Ligt has struggled at Juventus and he has the exact same weakness that Maguire has which is he turns like a cruise ship and his recovery speed is non existant.

Looks like things are moving transfer wise and Martinez is high on the list.

De Jong isn't a DM midfielder. He needs a specialist DM to play alongside him too. Or at least another CM that is defensively minded. He doesn't win the ball back with challenges. Think of a Pirlo than can dribble rather than a Gattuso.

A modern day Daniel Passarella, a player I was desperate for us to sign in 1978 after the World Cup as the issue of his height, or lack of, wasn't as important then to a 15 year old who hadn't really thought about it, but I do worry about it now.

We were actually linked to him but ending up going for Gordon McQueen and for significantly more money, probably because he was Scottish, and 8 inches taller, that and Leeds United didn't want to sell.

Agreed. De Jong is someone who can control the midfield but he isn't a DM. And he's good going forwards too so you want him to be able to do that.

You've got to think at his height he's likely to play CDM surely? I mean 5ft 9 in the PL? He'd be exposed badly I think.

We will have to wait and see how many top holding midfielders are 5ft 9? Kante is one most will use as an example but he’s got incredible energy levels and reads the game brilliantly that allow him to have the impact he does.

To be that small he’s going to need to be some player wherever he plays on the pitch at centre back team will look to target him in the air with good positioning and timing you can still be good in the air at that height.

Ido expect him to be used as a centre back mainly if that is where he’s made his name at Ajax.

I mean sure I get what you're saying but they could also pay £40M for a rotational CB?

Liverpool and City have both done that in recent seasons with Kounate and Ake.

If they can sell Bailly, Tuanzebe and Jones this summer they can claw back most of that fee.

They probably need a left footed centre back so it makes sense.

£40m is squad player money now which is pretty mad.

Spurs have just paid £60m for a squad player.

City paid £100m for Grealish who it would be hard to say was better than the options they had in the starting 11.

I don’t think being smaller means he will be terribly exposed. However, I would be worried at the lack of height overall in the team. We’ve lost Matic and Pogba’s height who both used to be decent at defending our box.

Liverpool and City... Both with very good and established defences. United can't spend that much on a back up CB.

If we buy anyone who is back up to our CB's they must be crap

Sort out the mess in front of them and you will see our centre backs are actually quite good.

no centre back will look any good without a midfield protecting them.

Hopefully a structured style of play will see drastic improvements in our defending.

Our defenders also need to cut out the silly out of character mistakes they were making last season.

Well firstly it doesn't seem like they are really going to sort out the midfield in front of them. And secondly, whilst I do agree with you to a large extent I still don't think Maguire is actually that good.

We shall see it doesn’t all require changes of personnel it just requires some basic organisation and discipline our midfield has to stay in shape it can’t just go wondering all over the place leaving a huge hole for teams to play in. Obviously having someone who’s really good at that job would help massively but it’s everyone from keeper to centre forward to start working together to make us hard to play through. Last season we were a disgrace and hopefully a better manager even with the same players can solve a number of those issues.

Anyways looks like Martinez wants the move and it’s between us and Arsenal hopefully ETH will get us ahead in the queue and you’d expect we have the extra financial muscle needed to move ahead of Arsenal.

Not overly convinced either is what we really need but I'd be tempted to let Arsenal have a free run at Martinez and go for Pau Torres instead, Bailly, Telles and £20m would probably convince Villarreal to sell him.

2 off the books and an extra £25+ to spend elsewhere.

The personnel in most positions is not good enough. Yes shape and discipline are key too but the talent isn't there.
@jsp say that, but he doesn't say anything about Bruno headless pressing that disrupt the shape of the midfield all Season. If only someone can talk to him about that, we will be better. Anyway, like you said, the talent isn't there.

Well lets be honest this team was not coached at all on how to play as a team for the last few years it was here's a basic shape and do whatever you want take risks and try to make things happen. Apart from a few games where we clearly setup to stay compact and play on the break although that wasn't really the case last season at all.

I'm sure with a new manager who we all hope actually has a plan and sets the team up with a strategy that if you don't do as you are told you will be subbed or dropped or given a b*llocking whatever ETH feels is necessary to correct the problem.

The talent isn't there to win the league but a better organised version of these players can easily compete for top 4 assuming we get 2 or 3 players in to replace the ones who've left. The gap to top 4 is a lot smaller that people think and for me that's a realistic target for next season.

Based on nothing can see Martinez ending up at Arsenal, then United going in hard for Tierney.

Yay another left back that spends most of the season injured.

Most of the reporting suggest Utd are in pole position for Martinez.

Ok, but were are the 3 players we need ? To be functionnal we need a DM and a RW if Ronaldo stay. But we also need an upgrade at RB and CB. The midfield will be too light with no replacement. We only have a month to fix it and there is no rumors except the De Jong saga. If we go in preseason without Ronaldo and with no midfielder signed, that will be extremly bad.

The injuries are a concern but he's Premier League proven, and has a serious physique/pace advantage over Martinez who I fear will struggle, initially at least.

City have been sniffing around him as well, and as they can pick'n'chose when it comes to PL players so he's obviously highly rated in the game.

Be glad when it's over to be honest wherever he goes, if I see one more picture of Edson Alvarez(also Ajax) in a tweet about Martinez i'm gonna throw my laptop.
