Andre Onana | Match Discussion Thread 2023/24

Yes he has had a couple of good games. If only we had Fellaini, Onana can drop it on his chest and by pass the whole opposition midfield in one pass. ;)

Has settled in really well now. So pleased for him after all the negativity and abuse he was getting early season!

Another solid game nothing amazing but he’s dominating his box and his passing has improved.

Signs confidence is growing.

But he looks to me he could have a mistake in him. That back pass that he missed was mind boggling.
Think he's actually been one of the better things in the team recently. A lot to be annoyed with, but he isn't one of those things right now. I think most keepers have a blunder in them, it's about limiting that as much as possible. I don't remember anything truly horrific since the champions league. Still can scare me with his outfield play though, but I'll learn to live with it, if he doesn't do too many mistakes.

He's had a good solid season, not sure why anybody would expect a newbie to the PL to not have a few wobbles along the way as it's the norm, moreso for keepers. And that's in a settled side!

Because he was especially horrible at the start of his tenure. He looked like a massive waste of money even. It wasn't a case of just a few little things to iron out. It was a lot worse.

He's made some crucial saves in the past few games. It seems the players are now more on his wavelength when making runs for his punts upfield.

Oh, I clicked on this thread expecting to read about how many goals he should have saved today ;).

really improved, but I guess practise makes perfect. If it wasn't for him some of our results would have high GA.

Dived a bit early on the pen.

Thought it was the City game.

Ederson collided with a Forest player as both went for the ball.

They were similar but from what I saw the Ederson one wasn’t a penalty the Onana one 100% was.

Two big mistakes this week resulting in goals.

He's done this before...

REALLY? Why has no one mentioned this happened before.

He isn’t the only keeper to be done for it a few have been caught out by it in the last couple of seasons.

Just pointing out he's a liability with decision making sometimes. This one was a penalty as well.

At the time I didn’t think it was as let’s be honest these have never been given as penalties but they’ve given them fairly regularly this season since then.

Yeah, this one wasn't given, but in my view it is 100% a penalty. I don't think anybody on the pitch has any right to just go attacking other players and that's all he ends up doing. It's just an assault. Keepers do tend to get away with a lot, and it needs to change.

I don’t think they attack the players, they’re going for the ball often with eyes only on the ball and collisions will happen, it isn’t assault.

Doesn’t mean if you get it wrong you can’t be punished though and Onana is lucky he has only been done once this season.

I reckon once that ball goes up in the air off that header Onana’s eyes are locked in on it and he doesn’t have any idea where anyone else is. Anything in his way is getting cleaned out.

Was always one of footballs odd unwritten the rules that keeper basically cannot be touched when he’s going for the ball but keepers can also punch you in the head on set pieces and 99% of the time get away with it.

Yeah, I don't think he's trying to harm anyone, but it does end up looking that way. Both of his challenges end up in bad collisions and both also end up with him missing the ball entirely. That has to have consequences. Commanding your area as a keeper should be a skill with vital decisions, made well, not some crash dummy area where anything goes. I deem them both as bad fouls and it shouldn't be anything different for a keeper. A bad foul is always punished, or should be.

Yes and that should have a penalty in that game too and we were very lucky not to give away one. You simply cannot go and punch or clean up the opposing player without giving away a penalty. He reminds me of Bailly a lot. Brilliant and then disastrous then next minute.

Luckily I missed the game, and I can't find a video. I dont have the will to go back and watch the game on Canal +

If its anything like the Wolves one then its a pen and a red card
