Alejandro Garnacho | Match Discussion Thread 2023/24

He should have had a third too as there is nothing in the rules that says a player sliding on his body can have his hands out spread and stopping the ball with his hand is not a foul.
Would have been a harsh one to give, I saw the replay a couple of times and was like.... nah. It was his supporting arm, so I don't think it would have ever been given.

I'd of loved garnacho to get another assist though, he's in my FPL team.

There is part of the rule that deals specifically with this as long as there’s no deliberate movement towards the ball its fine.

A handball offence is when a player (except the goalkeeper in their own penalty area):
  • deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm
  • touches the ball with their hand/arm when it is in a position that makes their body unnaturally bigger and when that position is not the result of their body moving fairly as part of play
  • scores a goal against the other team with their hand/arm or scores immediately after the ball touches their hand/arm (even if the touch was accidental)
The second part of bullet point 2 is part of the law that they use

A player goes sliding on his back or side with his arms stretched out as he does not want his head to hit the ground.

The point is when sliding your arms are allowed to be away from your body.

The only time they ever give them is if you slide and your arm is up above your body if it’s below your body and there to break your fall then they are told not to give the penalty.

They are very consistent with this application of the handball rule.

I know that but it is ridiculous. Look at McTominay running. He has his hands very low by his side. Look at someone like Cruijff. His hands are as high as his face. So what is natural for someone is not natural for the other.

Put your feet up lad.

What a shift never stopped running for 120 minutes.

Incredible performance given what his brother has tweeted:

Made his first start for Argentina last night.

Sure that was a very proud moment for him and his family.

Kind of hoped he would get a rest in this International break but a great moment for him!

I do feel for Garnacho and our other young players sometimes, he works his bollocks off game after game and the players around him just shrivel up and cave in at any sign of pressure.

Two good goals tonight and was always an outlet down that left. He has been one of the bright sparks in another wretched old season.

Its going to be a struggle to hang on to him if things progress the way they are.

Gem of a player. Great attitude too.

Once he tightens up his end product he’s going to be one of the very best. Half of your battle to be a great player is application and hard work and Garnacho has that in spades. We are very lucky to have him, we just need to give him some support.

Fantastic player but the rest of the team will need to match his effort levels or he`ll get fed up and move on, top teams are looking at him and he wont be short of offers.

Test of his quality will be next season he's now in the team can he maintain these standards.

I think Ten Hag has managed his development really well easing him in last season and at the start of this season now he's in that team on merit and flying.

These man end to end tactics really suit him.

I saw a report recently that stated he has always wanted to play for Real Madrid. Starting bid £200m+ or don't bother picking up the phone.

He better not make any noise about going there. I hate that Madrid crap.... "I want to play for Madrid, they're the best"... nah they're not. They wreck careers and don't give a damn about players, their fans boo their best players even when they perform. It makes no sense to me why so many players want to go there. It's a graveyard for talent. They nearly destroyed Odegaard, and robbed us of that talent. I love all great players being honest I'm not bothered if they don't play for my team - I love nothing more than having all the greatest players flourish.

Madrid better just find somebody else to chase. He's ours. £500m isn't enough.

It's the first time in 25 years, yes 25 years... that a youngster has scored 3 braces in a season in the prem.

Owen was the last player to do it as a striker.... 1998/99 season.

Got to keep and protect the young players, Mainoo, Garno, Rasmus and young Willy are the future.

Lucky for us Madrid have got a load of quality young wingers already on the books.

He probably did dream of playing for one of the Spanish giants as a lad and maybe one day he will as long as he gives us his best until his mid 20s and we get a huge transfer fee it doesn’t bother me to be honest.

If Utd aren’t going to build a side capable of winning the big titles why would he stick around if better sides that can win these competitions want him.

Utd have to build the environment where these sort of players never even think about leaving.

It's a good point.
