Scott McTominay | Match Discussion thread 2021/22

McTominay seems to slow on the ball in this system. Everyone else is moving it quickly whilst he's taking time to get the ball out of his feet and look up then pick a pass.

Isn't he the Scottish lad on loan from Chelsea? Remember he had a good game against England in the Euros.

Yeah he missed most of last season with a bad knee injury but prior to that he’d playing in some big games for Chelsea and held his own.

Much improved today seemed to want the ball more and probably enjoyed the fact Burnley made the game end to end rather than trying to suffocate us by sitting deep it suits McT when the game is a bit more open.

Deserved man of the match but you have to factor in Burnley are a poor side especially in midfield he needs performances like this a lot more regularly.

This should be his minimum level. He needs to be as good if not much better week in week out.

I reckon he has it in him, if he really really wants it. Has he the drive?

Another monstrous performance from McTom, just a shame so many of our fans who decide before the game has started he's gonna be crap will be reluctant to admit it. Or you'll get the usual yeah but it was only Burnley bullshit.

One great performance doesn’t overshadow the other rubbish he puts out. We just tell it how we see it.

If he can play like he did last night week in week out then we have one hell of a player. However, he doesn’t do that and is very inconsistent. Really liked the fact he was shooting from distant at every opportunity - he is a really good striker from distance and should be scoring more goals.

just don’t think there’s many games like that in a season Burnley were so open and that plays into his hands as he’s a very physical player.

when teams come and park the bus he’s got to find a way of impacting those games by using the ball cleverly and using his positioning to dominate the centre of the park.

Theres a role for him in this squad but I just don’t see him being a nailed on starter every week if we are to get back to the very top.

He needs to find much more consistency in his game. He has gone under the radar a bit this season as everyone has been busy blaming Fred. In his defence some of his good games, certainly in other seasons, have come against some of the better teams so he is not just a flat track bully. Could be a good box to box midfield player but will need some genuine quality alongside him.

Not buying that, seen the guy destroyed before(more on other forums granted) after he's had a solid 6/7 out of 10 performance, and the fact he's an Academy Grad and the significance of that goes over most peoples head sadly.

If he played like that every week he'd be the new Bryan Robson, and there's only ever gonna be one Bryan Robson, cue a song.

It’s irrelevant he’s from the academy, if he isn’t doing the business on the pitch then he will be criticised. He has more bad games than good, however he does have the potential to have very good games but he needs to add consistency to his game.

Ultimately we do need any upgrade on all our central midfield guys but he will be a good squad player to have.

Premier League: Manchester United 0-1 Wolves - 3rd January 2022

Standard performance.

I don’t know what his strengths are. He’s not good enough to play for United.

You won’t win league titles with him as your playmaker coming to get the ball off the defence he can’t pass through lines.

Runs around a lot but today you saw 2 far better centre mids give him the absolute run around.

It does not matter which 2 you play in midfield they will be equally as bad. That will not improve until we bring people in.

He was also so poor on the goal a player just running backwards not sensing where the danger might be he goes way to deep.

Moutinho is his man and he’s given him way to much space on the edge of our box Because he’s gone deep he can’t get out and a quality striker of the ball like Moutinho can punish you.

To fans of a certain age true, sadly

So do most of the players but some get cut more slack.

I've never said he should be anything other than a good squad option.

Shit again, he never contributes defensively and with time running out I hope I live long enough to see him score a goal.

2/10

His best performance for United bar none. He bossed that midfield tonight and some of his runs were outstanding. Hope his injury isn’t too bad because we need him in the team.

Found some form but these are teams in the bottom half he has to dominate against these teams.

not an easy job to play in midfield in this side he grafted played a nice ball into Ronaldo in the build up to the second goal.

Yeah that’s where the next stage of his progression comes in - he really needs to dominate like he did last night against the bigger teams. Some of his runs were so good, I wonder if Ralf has allowed him to express himself a little more? I did kind of feel he did lack confidence in his passing and runs but I definitely see signs of progression.

He is big and strong so has the ability to dominate games, really excited to see if he can really push on and get some consistency to his game. I think it does show when he isn’t in the team at the moment, ala against Villa.

I think like a lot of our players his form in the first half of the season was poor by his own standards but he's hopefully up and running now and we can at least see him at his best more often but I still have doubts over his best really being good enough. At Villa Utd played well for an hour pretty much had the game under control where it was lost in those last 20 minutes where Matic started getting over run and he couldn't control the match anymore.

I don't think he's a naturally defence minded player his instincts are in going forward he's become a pretty decent central midfield player but I still think he's well down on the quality of the players our rivals at the top of the league have. He's a squad player 20-25 games a season not a 50+ game starter for me.

Certainly seems to benefit when played in more of an attacking role and able to drive forward with the ball as we saw last night once Brentford opened up and tried to chase the equaliser he started to find a lot more space to really impact the game.

I don't think he's a holding player but played in a midfield 3 he could be a handy number 8 but if Utd want to play that system they've got to find that midfield anchor.

Premier League: Manchester United 1-0 West Ham United - 22nd January 2022

Reverted to type when in possession. Too much sideways running with ball at feet.

I think that is a touch unfair. He tried to pass forward when he could and create something. Fred on the other hand.......

Loves it vs Leeds doesn’t he.

Wasn’t his best game with the ball but went around smashing Leeds players which won’t do him Any harm with the Utd fans

Lucky to stay on the pitch really, he needs to watch it and not lose his head.

I dunno the ref let loads go for both sides once he had his warning which is all that was needed he calmed down the conditions meant the ref had to keep his cards in his pocket as players were slipping and sliding all over the gaff.

In European matches though he won't get that luxury I think Atletico will target him and wind him up try to get him to lash out.

Playing in a more holding midfield role lately with the switch to the 3 man midfield I don't think it really suits him but it's a job someone needs to do so all he can really do is give it his best.

They'd be totally wasting their time, he's played 163 times for United(incl. 29 Champions League/Europa League matches), and 29 International for Scotland and he's never been sent-off. I know there's always a first time ....

If they want to get somebody at it they'll target Ronaldo, Bruno, Maguire or Shaw. You can almost guarantee Suarez will try and take a chunk out of one of them, with Shaw most likely as he carries more than his fair share of unwanted fat. Yummy.

Lets be honest you can take your pick in this team for players to wind up any of them could lose their head at any moment and do something stupid especially if the game is going against us.

And there's me thinking we had a team of pussycats.

Was lucky not to get sent off today for that wreckless challenge. Passes sideways and backwards far too often, to demonstrate what a limited footballer he is.
