Cristiano Ronaldo | Match Discussion thread 2021/22

He may not be the ideal player for the press system but he's a damn good player. He's a long way from being united biggest issue.

Premier League: Manchester United 0-1 Wolves - 3rd January 2022

Think he is overall contribution is detrimental to the team. United miss the pace, movement and energy of a younger striker.

I think it would be best for both parties if he left in the summer.

Might be an idea to rotate CR and Cavani for the rest of the season, then decide who starts in the Champions League final on the night.

Come on, he’s always been a stroppy little mare even in younger days for us but guess it was forgotten when he was smashing in 30 goals a season.

Thought he was excellent tonight up against 3 CBs he had to battle hard and he did.

Service as per usual was awful but he kept going, won the ball back a few times, hit the bar with a good header and a moment of fantastic skill and improvisation created the second goal even if Bruno gets the assist Ronaldo made that goal.

Yeah he wasn’t happy at being subbed but top players never are get it out of your system and move on.

I remember so many United players down the years doing this when they were subbed off. Ronaldo is just the current scapegoat for fans. He was unhappy because he wanted to score and obviously felt he could have helped put the game beyond doubt. Rangnick opted to do something different and it worked.

He isn’t the scapegoat, he’s a hindrance to the team. Wednesday was one of his better performances but he has frequently lacked mobility, struggled to link play, he doesn’t press, other players suffer with him in the team and his goal return doesn’t mask his deficiencies. He’s an old fashioned penalty area striker. He hasn’t improved the team.

Think this is disgraceful.

Ralf also goes on to say that he has no problems and all is sorted.

Definitely mountain out of a molehill stuff.

Premier League: Manchester United 1-0 West Ham United - 22nd January 2022

His best performance of the season. He linked well and worked hard.

I don't actually agree that he doesn't link the play very well. Sure it isn't his game but I don't think he's terrible at it. He can hold it up, he does hold it up and he will drop a little deeper to move attacks.

FA Cup: Manchester United 1-1 Middlesbrough - 4th February 2022

Stick the fork in… he’s done.

Martial would offer more as the striker.

Seems like we say this every summer but we need to buy at least two quality players. For me that has to be Rice and Haaland.

As for Ronaldo, I still think he will score plenty of goals between now and the end of the season but there is something not quite right about him at the moment. His finishing is usually absolutely pinpoint - even if he has lost his legs a little the finishing should still be crisp.

We definitely should be saying at the end of the season to Ronaldo and Cavani thanks but time to go.

I agree. It doesn't matter how many supposed quality players we bring in I seem to continuously saying we need more. On Ronaldo he will score goals during the season but I don't think it's enough to make up for his drawbacks. Watching him recently he seems to be stumbling quite a lot when he is in good positions.
So we need at least one midfield player, probably two, and a quality striker, and if we won't play Sancho on the right flank we probably need that too

Will we ever see a trademark Ronaldo header?

He Is just a finisher now expecting anything else from him is pointless I do think it should be 1 year and out for him maybe back to Portugal but he needs a really quality side around him to thrive now.

Ok look I'm going to try and change my approach a little. I don't want to twist the knife on you guys so I'm sorry for being a d bag.

So can I ask... Where do you think signing 2 quality players (and there's no doubt of the quality of those 2) gets united?

I actually think we need more than two players. However a top quality midfield player and centre forward gets us easily top 4 and hopefully taking a challenge deep into the season

I'd agree with that to be honest. I think 2 quality signings make United a top 4 team without much fuss. It won't make them a title challenger though in my opinion.

Spoilt your post with the second sentence ;), surely you can't believe that?

Yep. Martial would link play better and score a similar number of goals, if not more. Might be a different story in the champions league. Martial will do well in Spain.

I don't think you can be certain of that considering what we have seen from Martial.

I do think resigning Ronaldo was another poor decision by the club.

I dunno I think he's made a pretty good contribution this season but he's joined a club with a whole host of problems that he seems to now get the blame for.

I don't think it was a great decision but if the talk of City was true one we probably had to make just to save the embarrasment, there's been way worse decisions made by the club in the last decade. Not allowing him to sign for City isn't the greatest reason to sign him but I can see why they felt the need to do it.

Not addressing the midfield and not addressing the bloated squad for me were the bigger issues last summer.

I don't know about that.

From a marketing point of view it really was a no brainer for the club. Now I know fans don't care so much about that but with the Glazers as your owners that's important to them.

I think he's contributed well in the CL and he still could help United get to the latter stages. He's that kind of player who can prove to be the difference in those tight games.

But overall I do agree it was a change in the strategy and how that impacted players. They were building a good young team and this changed that and changed the expectations for the season.

No player should be signed for marketing reasons or judged by the number of shirts you sell.

You are judged by what you do on the pitch.

Yes Ronaldo does bring in a lot of attention because of who he is but lets remember he's also paid a fortune for that service in return so it's a give and take arrangement. The reports suggest he's earning close to £500k a week at Utd.

He’s been poor for the last two months. He should be managed properly and not starting every game or playing every minute.

It’s a bad signing.

Is it? He has single handedly kept us in the Champions League. However unlikely it maybe, if we go onto win the CL then he would of played a massive part in doing so.

He has been poor for a little while now but he could just kick back into life. He is still getting chances but his finishing has been surprisingly poor.

I think this season should be his last for us but he still has the potential to be a big influence for the remainder of the season.

I think there is a counter argument to that in that before he arrived we were playing better football and weren't so reliable in getting the ball to our centre forward.

You could say, if we hadn't signed him we wouldn't have struggled so much in those matches
