Loan Watch: Joe Rothwell and Ben Pearson join Barnsley

Manchester United youngsters Joe Rothwell and Ben Pearson have joined Barnsley on initial six-month loan deals.

Both central midfielders by trade, the pair will aim to receive regular first team football, in the hope of impressing the United hierarchy going forward.

Pearson, 20, returns to Oakwell where he made 21 appearances for the Yorkshire outfit in the second half of last season, in what was a productive spell for Ben.

Meanwhile, Rothwell endured a far more torrid time in a loan spell at Blackpool, making just one start and a further two substitute appearances, as the turbulent seaside club finished rock bottom of the Championship, on their way to an inevitable relegation due to their on and off-field problems.

The Tykes will benefit largely from Pearson’s energy and aggression in the centre of midfield, as they found out last season, with his precise passes and positive attitude other big parts of his game.

Rothwell, on the other hand, has an eye for goal, scoring five times in 15 U21 appearances last season, including a brace at Craven Cottage away at Fulham, where Robin van Persie netted the other half of the goals, in a 1-4 rout.

The range of passing of Rothwell is also something to look out for, and dropping down a division from last time and being accompanied by his friend Pearson, should allow the 20-year-old to prosper in a side that finished a respectable 11th last year, with the expectation of a promotion push likely for the upcoming campaign.

Rothwell and Pearson know that they have time on their sides to establish themselves in the United first team set-up going forward, and this will be another stepping stone towards that goal should they stamp their authority on Lee Johnson’s side this season.
