Future Prospect: John Cofie

Manchester United’s academy has so many great young strikers coming through that in a few years’ time the first team will have some of the most promising strikers in England if not the world. Currently we have Federico Macheda, Danny Welbeck, Joshua King, William Keane and now John Cofie. This list is excluding two relatively young and very promising strikers in Javier Hernandez and Mame Biram Diouf.

John Cofie is the latest to impress in the Academy, having started the season on a high, he’s scored in almost every game he’s played so far and is sure to score plenty more. Cofie was born in Aboso, Ghana on 21 Jan 1993, and was signed up by Burnley when they spotted him playing in Germany. One year on, he was signed up by United after paying them compensation. Recently he was heavily linked with Liverpool who were trying to lure him away from United, but he finally signed his professional contract with United this year.

He officially joined United in July 2009, and joined the U-18 team. He had already made 2 sub appearances for the academy team in early 2009. In the 2009/10 season he went on to score 6 goals in 25 appearances for the academy and also made 2 appearances as a sub for the reserves. This season Cofie burst onto the scene with an impressive pre-season and he continued his form on to the regular season as he has scored 4 goals in 4 appearances for the academy so far and also scored a goal for the reserves in 2 appearances. If Cofie builds on his current form, he’s sure to get Sir Alex’s attention, and a sub appearance in the Carling Cup at the least is not too far-fetched.

Cofie’s best attributes are his size and physique, he’s also blessed with quick feet; he’s pretty good with the ball at his feet considering his height and loves to run at defenses. Cofie’s greatest improvement since last season has been his finishing, he seems to have worked hard on it over the summer and it is clearly showing as he has been clinical with his finishing so far this season.

Cofie is eligible to play for three nations – Germany, England and Ghana. He has so far appeared for England at the youth level, but rumors have been abound that Ghana were considering giving him a call up to their national team soon.

Cofie should be another one to reckon for in the future as he continues to impress in the academy, with Welbeck, Diouf, King out on loan, his chances to play for the reserves should improve vastly and hopefully he grabs this opportunity and impresses. A great season this year and Cofie would have thrown his hat into the ring for first team selection.

  1. Great review of John Coffie with some real nice facts.
He is going to be with the right support a real asset to United.
I loved the way he took his goal against Stockport in the reserves game.Pure natural ,balance turn of speed and strong on the Ball.
To also clip the bar with a calmness and composure and not let his head go down.
What impresses me most about this player he plays with a huge smile on his face.
It purely shows he is loving his time at United.
Long may it continue and as is suggested in the article he gets a wee chance in the Carling cup on the subs bench.
Or possibly in the Premiership against some of the lesser teams like Citeh.

Cofie has been very impressive so far this season. If he works hard he could have a big future. He is a proper finisher – he side foots or places his shots. He is ready for reserve team football at the least.
