Van de Beek‘s future

It’s a massive shame it never really worked out with him. You’d think with our midfield options he’d have got more chances but he’s never really had a go.

Think he prefers to play a little further forward and Bruno has always been in his way.

Surprised he hasn't had more opportunities, especially under ETH, and especially the state of our midfield.

Shame, I always felt given a good run, he could have been good.

He got a good chance early on and his play was always way too passive. He did have Bruno in his way but his performances were never good enough to really force his way into the side.

Like jsp said, I suspect the fee quoted to Frankfurt is just enough for us to breakeven on him for FFP purposes.

I hope it goes well for him because he seems like a good guy and needs to find a club to settle at because from a promising career it has nosedived for him.

I'm not sure he got that run of games needed to make a mark

I just don’t think he ever did enough to deserve a run of games, they see him every day in training and we see him in matches and in matches he was poor.

The league I think was a bit to quick and physical for him and yeah him probably being at his best in Bruno’s position doesn’t help.

Struggled to stay fit as well even his loan spell at Everton which might have been the kick start he needed was disrupted by injury and he was out for pretty much all of last season.

He was a strange buy at the time a square peg for a round hole, I worry we’ve made the exact same mistake with Mount. Signed a good number 10 and trying to get him to play in centre mid rather than just buying a quality centre mid.

I dunno, has Hojlund done enough? he still gets a lot of good feel from the fans too. I think Donny didn't as fair a crack as say Hojlund.

I feel for Donny, I don't think Ole wanted him, he didn't get a chance and he had a few injuries at key moments.

Hojlund has 6 goals in 23 games and works his arse off in every game. Not amazing but not a terrible start for a 20 year old in a team struggling to create chances.

With VDB I just never thought this lad looks Utd class. I just couldn’t see it when I watched him play he just never looked like the right player, he was ok at everything but not particularly great at anything.

I don’t think any manager in the Glazer era has been forced to take a player they didn’t want. The manager has always had the last word on players so I don’t think Ole gets a pass. He probably wanted cover/competition for Bruno but he didn’t realise Bruno hardly gets injured and would play pretty much every game.

I didn't say he was forced to play him! I said I don't think he wanted him.

Unusual for a manager to ask for a player and never play him, or rarely.

As for Hojlund 1 goal in 16 odd prem games is a poor return for a striker. But that wasn't my point. Which was It's funny how some players get a break from the fans, yet other don't. I don't think Donny got as fair a crack as Hojlund for example.

But hey, who knows what goes on behind the scenes.

Good luck to him, I've always liked him, don't think united has treated him very well. But that's not new for them

I don’t think he’d take a player he didn’t want, I just don’t think Ole realised that he didn’t need him. Bit like the Ronaldo deal we had the chance to bring him in not as part of a plan but because an opportunity arose to do it, it never felt to me like they had a plan for him. If I recall correctly Utd went out of both cups in his first season in the first game they played so there wasn’t a chance to ease him in during those games.

Keita at Liverpool, Phillips at City and I’m sure there are others. Donny didn’t play because when he did play he wasn’t very good. He was a squad player not a starter so you need to earn that starting spot and the reality was he never did. I am really struggling to remember a good game he had for us. He quickly looked like another lad who comes over from Holland and looks out of his depth in the premier league.

Donny didn’t get a free run at the starting spot that Hojlund has had because there was more competition for that spot than Hojlund faces. Donny was also a much more experienced player than Hojlund who he joined the club he had 4 seasons at Ajax and nearly 200 appearances for them.

I don’t have sympathy for him a proper player at the end of the first season tells the manager to sell him and moves on.

Not sure if coming to United ruined him, he always looked like a Rabbit caught in a cars headlights to me.

Good that he’s moving on.

He is one of the players that for me had to be sold this summer we need to start drawing a line through some of our issues.

Apparently the deal is worth £400k before him meeting add ons.

It's been a shocking transfer for the club.

Yep.

We spent a lot of money on a player we didn’t need and I really am struggling to remember a good game from him.

Never looked right for the premier league.

Guess the club are just relieved to get him off the wage bill, basically giving him away for nothing.

That deal sounds a lot better than the original report essentially it's £4m plus there could be another £8m that could come in add ons if he does well.

Hope it works out well for him.

Unfortunately it didn’t work out for him here and it’s very surprising as de Jong, de Ligt etc got all the plaudits in that Ajax team but VDB was one that really made them tick. Sadly just wasn’t the right move for him.

If the fee eventually gets up to £15m then it’s a good move.

Just a signing that made no sense we needed a proper centre midfielder and signed another number 10.

Bruno is miles better than him and never gets injured so there just wasn't any chance of him playing really.

Think it was £35m plus £5m of add ons.

I'd be surprised if we've paid any of the add ons.

He was a player who was a pass and move player and United never do that. After a period he will come good at Girona.
