Valencia is first choice right back?

Van Gaal stated that Darmian, the Italy right-back bought for £12.7m from Torino, will start as back-up. “We have brought Darmian for the second position behind [Antonio] Valencia and now already because of that injury [Paddy] McNair has to play there,” he said.

Possibly badly worded by Van Gaal, due to English not being his first language.

Darmain will probably benefit from being eased into Premier League football if Valencia does start the season as first choice.

Think it's probably just Van Gaal setting a challenge to Darmian, basically saying he has to work hard to be first choice. Wants a battle between the 2, not just these 2 either, he wants that throughout the squad.
