Read something about this today. Is seems we have to sell to buy. No because of money but because of the new rules coming next season.
This season we have had close to 40 players registered.
Next seasons rules are:
1) Each squad must submit a roster of 25 first-team players eligible to participate in league matches.
2) Of those 25, at least 8 must have spent at least 3 years between the ages of 16 and 21 training with an English or Welsh club. These qualify as “homegrown” players, regardless of whether they are originally English or Welsh, or whether those 3 years were actually spent at their current club.
3) Players who turn 21 after January 1 of the season in question are eligible to play in first-team matches and do not count against the 25 man squad limit.
United have already added two new players to next season’s squad, but only one counts against the 25 man roster. Javier “Chicharito” Hernández turns 22 this summer. However, Fulham’s Chris Smalling is 20, and doesn’t hit 21 until November.
United currently have 24 players that will most likely make the squad list and are over the “21? requirement. Of those 24, 12 qualify as “home grown” players. Thus, United will definitely satisfy that set requirement.
Senior List: 1) Van der Sar, 2) Tomasz Kuszczak, 3) Wes Brown, 4) Jonny Evans, 5) Pastrice Evra, 6) Rio Ferdinand, 7) Gary Neville, 8) John O’Shea, 9) Nemanja Vidic, 10) Michael Carrick, 11) Darren Fletcher, 12) Darron Gibson, 13) Ryan Giggs, 14) Owen Hargreaves, 15) Nani, 16) Gabriel Obertan, 17) Anderson, 18) Park Ji-Sung, 19) Paul Scholes, 20) Antonio Valencia, 21) Dimitar Berbatov, 22) Michael Owen, 23) Wayne Rooney.
Home Grown Players: Brown, Evans, Ferdinand, Neville, O’Shea, Carrick, Fletcher, Gibson, Giggs, Scholes, Owen, Rooney.
Of the remaining 16 players, only one is already above the age limit, Mame Biram Diouf.
So if we are to sign a new player we actually have to make room for him first. This point was made by Gill and is more a fact than a way to play down UTD not having transfer funds.
