Scott McTominay | Match Discussion Thread 2023/24

Think the way they play just really suits him they play him high up they're direct towards him and get good crosses into the box for him to attack.

He's not asked to be a play maker and break down a team that's sitting in most of the time they're playing on the break and he can use his strengths to get up with the attackers and anticipate where the ball is going to break for him.

They definitely play to his strengths and essentially let him have that free role where he can just get into the box at will. They’ve definitely found upon a system where he does flourish in.

It really pains yous that he's doing really well at a level ABOVE club football don't it?

No one really thinks playing Norway and Georgia is comparative let alone above playing the likes of Arsenal and City do they?

The Georgia vs Scotland game has Seria B players against Championship players. It’s no where near the level of top half premier league football let alone near the top upper echelons of club football.

Might be one of the most absurd things I’ve read today and I spent half my day reading about Duck Bill Platypus

Would make sense if i'd said something along the lines of I watched Curaçao vs El Salvador last night. The pinicle of football. Don't know why anyone bothers with the Prem when international football is obviously of a higher level. Then you could go that guy clearly has learning difficulties with an opinion as foolish as that.

Look mate I don't know if you think you are being clever or witty, but i've got news for you, you come across as neither.

Whether he's good for Scotland is irrelevant. I couldn't care less about Scotland.

He's not very good for united, and his stats show that.

To make a comparison, if he chose England, would he even make the squad. Not likely

He's been ok for us but we have to play a different way to accommodate him.

Given the injuries to Casemiro and Eriksen he's going to feature in the next run of games.

whoever puts his stats on here, about passes, tackles etc, paints a different picture.

I have watched all the games this year, and he's not good enough, he doesn't use the ball well enough, he doesn't have the control or the vision.

BUT, he has scored a couple of vital goals...and given a couple.

That is what it comes down to if we want control the game and create chances then he doesn't work if the game is a bit end to end he can be quite effective.

He isn't a long term solution but with the injuries we've probably got to use him as we also need his height on set pieces at either end.

If Utd needed 3 points to avoid relegation on Sunday it would probably be because McTominay had started the previous 37 games :p

But at least he was fit and available for all 38 games, must get brownie points for that at least?

Very well taken goal. He is definitely a good finisher and one of our few players who I am confident of scoring when given the chance.

Saying that though, he was okay overall but we still need something more from our midfield players.

The internet sure brings a new element(for use of a better word) to watching United matches these days, for example yesterday when McTominay scored I knew there would be 100's, nay 1000's of United fans thinking shit I won't be able to give him my usual 3/10 now or I'll look like an idiot, I might have to give him a 5/10, bummer.

I assume it's a tactical decision but at 2-0 and 3-1 we should not have had both Bruno and McTominay bombing forward trying to get another goal at that point your midfield should be knocking the ball around and keeping possession for as long as possible.

I think when we play McTominay we have to play quite a direct style an end to end game suits him but we can't keep doing that we have to find a way of slowing games down and controlling them especially in Europe.

Took his goal well.

You still going with that?

He’s an absolutely nothing player. How did he play the full match? How many completed passes or even attempted passes?

Forgot he was on at the end to be honest. If he doesn’t grab a goal you would forget he was playing.

McTominay 22 passes completed out of 24
Mainoo 36 out of 39 (subbed after 80 minutes)
Bruno 43 out of 51

Joelinton 42 out of 49
Bruno G 57 out of 63
Miley 36 out of 40

So of the 6 centre mids on the pitch McTominay has passed the ball roughly half the number of times of the 5 other players in a similar position.

And?

It was a response to a question in a post above from @Sideshow Bob about the number of passes McTominay made.

I provided the information along with the other players from similar positions to provide a bit of context.

I'm well aware of that, apologies the 'And' was meant for both of yous.

I think it highlights the big problem with him in the middle, he's not good enough, nowhere near enough passes. We need somebody who can take control of the middle. It's why games just pass us by.

Oh right so it's his fault he didn't receive the ball more to make more passes. Oh shit yet forget he hides.

He must hide if everybody else in that role doubles his passes.

He needs to go looking for the ball, be braver, but he's not got the skill

I think the problem with him is tactical going man to man in midfield 3 vs 3 is getting found out because quality wise our 3 are often not as good as the oppositions 3.

Huh, nobody else on the pitch played a similar role.

His job was to stay in contact with Martial in the number 8 role, if he'd gone walkabout looking for the ball he would've been hooked.
