Rasmus Hojlund | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

Very poor game. But he is not a player who plays with his back to the goal. Playing without a striker for a long time has made this mess.

Poor work rate when we don't have the ball, and the ball never sticks when receiving a pass with his back to goal.

You can’t knock the lads work rate and attitude but he does need to start showing us more of the goods.

I think that has to be the plan as we've spent a lot of money on this kid.

At Hojlund's age Gyokeres was struggling to make much of an impact it was only really his final season at Coventry that he really came to life by that point he was a couple of years older than Hojlund is now.

I think any striker who scores goals will need a team to play to his strengths we don't really do that we tend to play for the wingers to be the goal scorers which means as the striker you've got to do a lot of ugly hard work with very little glory and reward.

Will be interesting to see if Amorim changes that and looks to focus more of our attacking play towards creating chances for Hojlund rather than the wide forwards.

The thing with Hojlund for me, he looks like if he's in the right place, he'll score. But he doesn't seem to have that natural ability to be in the right place, to make the run at the right time. I don't know if you can teach that.

I think it's a hard team to play up front in because you never know when the ball is going to come in.

He doesn't seem to have any relationship going with anyone else in the team he looks totally disconnected from everyone else.

We play a lot of long balls to him back to goal as a target man which isn't his game but he's got a little bit better with it but even though when we do it we never get the wide players close to him to go after the second balls.

He looks like a striker who needs space in behind to work with in a packed box he doesn't look like he's going to find some space and sniff out a chance

indeed, when there are players in the box, waiting for the cross (to never arrive) he doesn't seem to make those natural movements to create a bit of space. He seems quite static. Likewise his runs into the box seem to be into the wrong areas.

He seems to score most when he's got the ball at his feet running towards goal.

I'm not sure he's got that poachers brain.

He looks like he`s given up on ever getting a decent ball to score from lately, cant fault his running though he sweats more in one game than Martial did in a full season.

I dunno he sniffed out a few goals in his first season but they all came when the ball came in quick or broke his way in the box his finishing is lethal.

His goals have been a bit of a mix of everything to be honest there just isn't enough chances coming to him he basically gets 1 shot a game.

You would hope that if Utd can get that first goal in games more often teams will be forced to come out and offer him a bit of space in behind that we can exploit.

You're right of course, but I wonder if this is in part because he's not there or is making the wrong runs. It's a tricky one to work out

I remember Bruno fuming at somebody on Sunday for not making the run, I just cant recall if it was Hojlund.

It's another problem for the new manager, he's going to need to work out very quickly if we need to go into the market for a striker. Personally, I think he does. Zirkzee out, new guy in.

Absolutely the team is still very disjointed and in my opinion underperforming, Amorim will have some work to do for sure.

Got to go down as one of his best United performances?

Harried the keeper for the first goal, scored two and was overall very good.

Top class tonight.

Did everything you want from a centre forward.

Held it up and bought his team mates into the game
Ruthless with the chances that came his way
Worked his nuts off leading the press from the front.

Did really well, needs to sort some of his runs out, a bit direct and easy to mark
But his best performance by a mile.
Really good

he really must break his runs up to, too many straight runs. Too easy to mark.

I think he can get there, but not ready to lead the line for us yet. He can finish when he gets the chance, but he needs to take up better positions to get more chances.

But as I said, i really enjoyed his performance

Really good for him to get 2 goals (and important goals at that). There’s talent there but I do think he needs to be more of a presence in the box. There were a lot of crosses in the first half that he was nowhere near (not all on him but I think that’s a trend that he’s shown overall).

we do, and we will
Not sure we will now, there’s more urgent need elsewhere, two road-runners one either side of Ugarte, a replacement for Martinez/Shaw, and an experienced wide player who can take the pressure off Garnacho and Amad

yeah, but we need goals. Even if I thought he was ready, just one striker is risky.

I think there will be a surprising sale to fund a striker..... I am known for accurate predictions ;)

Think the club is very confident one of Wheatley, Biancheri or Chido Obi will be able to provide adequate competition for Hojlund until the Summer, then who knows, if one of them does a Rashford it could save the club a small fortune

I think they should bring in an experienced striker in the summer.

Time to come home Danny and start scoring a few for us rather than against us

Suggested that in the Summer but most on here poo poo'd it

He's a game lad and he's got another 2 or 3 years left in his legs

I was on board with it.

Not sure how much he’d want to come back, got the impression he wasn’t happy with how it ended for him.

Injuries have been cruel to him since he left

Poor tonight.

Not the greatest service but when the ball did get to him he didn’t look after it well enough.
