Premier League 2023/24: Chelsea vs Man United - Thurs 4th Apr - 20:15 KO

Some people like to talk with others during games.

I’m watching this game on my own and others might be doing the same so nothing wrong with a bit of engagement between fellow fans.

Just because you decide to not post during the 90 minutes doesn't make you any better or worse than those who post during the games.
Don't give it the time of day, mate.

I've played to a decent level and it's the only position I never played but I've heard enough keepers over the last 50 years say if the ball goes through a players legs you've got absolutely no chance, and they should know. Be interesting to see if Big Pete pipes up over the next few days and defends or criticises him ....

I played in goal up until I was about 12 then decided to play on pitch instead so got some very limited experience.

Through the legs is very tough especially if it’s across you as you don’t have time to move your feet and get across the goal to cover the corner.

His issue wasn’t the fact it’s through the legs it’s the fact it’s close to his body. He is a big lad and he is slow to get down the way he collapses to make these sort of saves is not good. He should be using his feet in those situations rather than try to get down with his hands in my opinion.

Im not saying it’s a howler I’m saying a guy who’s meant to be one of the best keepers in the world I think should stop that.

This is a good point. A lot of time in anything what is fashionable is tried. Listen to the Rooney interview where he says it is fashionable to try and play out from the back and that is why most teams play that way no matter how good that team is trying to play that way. It is the same with keepers too. Their primary job is to keep the ball out of net no matter how. This diving or collapsing on the ball is not the best way sometimes. Using their legs to keep it out is sometimes necessary. yes going thru a players legs is extremely difficult to judge as the keeper is moving in the wrong direction too. I would never say that Onnana was at any given time a top class keeper unlike DeGea who was at one time one of the best keepers in the world.

It's not talking though is it, it's almost like people are trying to outdo each other with negativity.

If United were 2-0 up after 20 minutes in a match the thread would just grind to a halt.

Maybe not, just more of a supporter.

Guessing you watched it on BT sport or whatever they call it these days and you were swayed by the co-commentator who would rather admit to being English than credit a keeper with anything.

Let's see what the goal-keepers union say.

The mood on a match thread ebb and flow depending on the action.

Of course if it goes 2-0 then nothing happens it’ll be quiet if it is a back and forth game like this it will get the full range of emotions.

I did but my instant reaction was that’s gone through him and the replays backed up my opinion. McCoist having the same view didn’t impact my thoughts that I felt he could have saved it. Wasn’t something I expect him to save 99/100 more 8/10.

Like I said not a howler but I think he will be disappointed that shot beat him.

Oh yes the never biased goalkeepers union.

It all depends on your ability and what you are comfortable doing if you can get down quick then collapsing is the best option as you can collect the ball. It is the method most keepers are taught.

Some keepers who play other sports like Schmiechel (handball) and Cech (ice hockey) are happier spreading themselves and using their legs on reaction saves.

De Gea was also very good at using his legs for reaction saves, no idea where that technique comes from by the way but it worked for him.

Number 1 priority is keep the ball out number 2 is get it safe.

Using your legs probably gives your a better chance with number 1 but where it goes after is a bit of a lottery.

I don’t want to dwell on it to much he wasn’t the reason we lost the game but I do feel he’s got a bit of a weakness in his game getting down quickly to low shots.

But you know what I'm saying is true, and I'm hardly having a go at you am I, you're on the forum more than me, at times I think there must be two of you!

Make your mind up, if you'd expect a keeper to save it 8/10 it was a howler.

Toughest position to play on the pitch, you can make 7/8 out of this world saves to keep your side in the game, then make one mistake and you are the villain, not surprised they stick together.

I know but we want people to come on the forum and post so taking needless pops at people who post their views probably drives them away rather than encouraging them to stick around.

Not saying you can’t disagree on opinions just no need to suggest they aren’t real fans because they have a bit of a vent on a forum during/after games.

They said the same about Ji-Sung Park

Well no because 2/10 it beats a keeper, a howler to me is something that you should only be letting in 1 in every 100 it is a very rare occurrence.

Not going to dwell on it as I’ve said in other posts he wasn’t to blame for that result I just think he could have done better what that one.

It was something I said in the moment and I think it’s a bit of a flaw in his game I don’t think he’s good at shots that are low and close to him. Just the way I see it old chum.

That's my point, they won't be on the forum to read my comments, sadly, and probably won't see them again till the Liverpool match is in progress .... rinse repeat. I just don't get what they get out of it, if you want to bitch and moan about everything about the club you say you support do it all week, every week so I can tell them why they are wrong! It's not as though I charge ....

It's just banter, there is never ever anything nasty in it, though appreciate in type that might not always come across.

Never noticed it as a flaw in his game, DDG yes, and don't get me started on how many shots he got beat at his near -post, now that is a goalkeeping no-no, a top keeper should never get beat at his near post, ever ....

You dont half read some utter crap on here, United are shit, why pretend otherwise? being a supporter doesent mean you have to pretend everything is great when it clearly isn't.
Onana should have stopped the first one although the defense didnt do enough to prevent the shot, two penalties given away from stupid tackles that were unnecessary, look at Antony and Dalots reactions, they didnt protest much because they both knew they had fkd up, and the last goal..wow how bad does it have to get before it sinks into someones head? basic schoolboy errors leaving Palmer unmarked for the shot.

I said pre match that Palmer could have a field day if he wasn't dealt with and he gets a winning goal, wipe the crap from your eyes and wake up the table does not lie, making pathetic excuses all the time wont win trophies.

I think Onana is unlucky, he should have saved it, but it came through a players legs, probably saw it late.

The problems start before that, Mainoo loses possession in midfield, still far enough away from goal, the ball goes out right, there are two free chelsea players, not a LB/def in sight. Too many Chelsea players in there unmarked.

It was an awful performacce by both teams. Both kept giving the possession away.

This result is 90% on the players and 10% on the manager.

This match showed some of our "big players" are not up for it and the new management need to get harsh.

Bruno, Cas, Varane, Maguire need to go.

Antony had one of his better games but still was guilty of sloppy play - squad player at best
Rashford - squad player, if he wasnt so red he'd be gone

AWB - was he injured? if not he needs to go, Mudryk was about twice as fast as him.

Dalot get the benefit becasue in general he's had a good season

McTom - squad player or sell

Why did the manager take off the only player who was doing something and chasing a hat trick.

The level of the manager and the players, and shamefully the attitude of the players is not good enough for Man utd.

We made a very poor side look good.

The G.Nev podcast Overlap is intersting this week with Rio.

I didn't mind it to much last night as it was at least both sides trading blows it wasn't all one way traffic like the Brentford game.

It probably suited us to play that way, be open and end to end as that creates space for our attackers.

Individual errors were the difference really last night they made 1 big one which was the Caicedo pass that put Garnacho in our other 2 goals were just well worked goals. Really we gifted Chelsea 3 of their goals 2 penalties and totally switching off on a set piece. The first goal we give it away in midfield but after that they move it well to create the Gallagher chance so I'll give them that one.

Casemiro was awful no doubt. He looks like he’s running through treacle half the time which is a shame to see.

If we could control games and not leave so much space then his deficiencies wouldn’t be as exposed but the way we play just outlines his rapid decline.

I'll watch it back again at some point the signal for video where I am isn't good enough but how I remember it.

Mainoo played a square ball behind Garnacho as we're in possession Dalot is inside which is what he does in possession.

Chelsea get the break in the wide area and Gusto gets in Varane goes out to deal with it and Dalot drops in at centre back, Casemiro gets back into the box around the 6 yard box maybe goes slightly to deep but from memory Chelsea had quite a few in the box. The deflection off Varane takes it straight to Gallagher and Casemiro can't get out quick enough to block.

If that ball doesn't take a deflection then Casemiro is in a good position to block it.

I don't remember where Mainoo who lost the ball was when the ball went in.

He lost the ball in our half which is always going to be a problem.

is it, so we set a team up where if we lose a ball in our half, the opposition have a shot on goal.

no wonder we face so many

Do you remember the football before Christmas where we'd barely have a shot in games?

This way of playing has massively helped our attack create chances and score goals but the flip side is it's opened us up big time defensively.

For what it's worth I don't think we are particularly good at playing either way but at least this way we score some goals.

unfortunately, I remember this season very well. I wished I could forget it.

Bruno, Cas, Varane, Maguire need to go.

Dalot get the benefit becasue in general he's had a good season
At the moment, I think Maguire is one of our top performing CBs. Every time he plays, he invariably is first to the ball and heads everything away.

Dalot, good season by his own average standards. You cannot compare him to other fullbacks.

Okay Mr Hyperbole ;)

United are shit, United are shit, hello, hello

I’m sure you’ll soon get Top poster of the month again.

Not for quality obviously, just for the sheer amount of constant drivel.
