Pre Season 2024/25

out of interest, how many injuries have Liverpool and Arsenal picked up on the same pitches.

I skim read something, the medical team or the head is one who arrived under Ole. And ever since we've picked up loads of pre season injuries.

I don't follow them as closely but think 1 player went off injured in the Liverpool game the other day but no idea how it happened.

From the outside looking in you'd be looking at the Hojlund injury which is a hamstring injury and saying to the medical team is he really ready to play and the Yoro one which is a twisted ankle and thinking that could be related to the pitch and is just bad luck.

I did notice in the Arsenal game that players from both sides were getting pretty stuck in to each other which didn't cause either of the injuries but it was maybe a bit more intense than you'd expect. Probably youngsters wanting to make a good impression on the managers.

Sounds like that isn't true he is at training but not participating.

Ankle injury still being assessed by the medical staff.

The club are quite tight lipped on injuries these days, it's unlikely they'll set a return date that is made public

And Amass, slight switch off for their goal looks to be ready for a starting place, very mature performance.

sounded like a good game. Rashford off injured, hopefully minor.

Bruno, Dalot, Garnacho and Bayindir have all returned to Carrington to start pre season.

Just leaves Martinez, Shaw and Mainoo to return I believe they’re due back on Monday.

Last pre season tour game is the early hours of Sunday so I’m guessing after that they’ll be straight on the flight home and back into Carrington either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Not that worried to be fair. From the line up in this game, you would say maybe only 3 or 4 will actually start in our best XI. It does highlight our need for more reinforcements though, as we do struggle when some of our better players get injuries.

Liverpool probably had the better team out as well, so overall shouldn’t be too down.

Onana made a bad mistake for the third, this needs eradicating for the coming season its not good enough.

So I’m interested to know how you guys feel at this point… I thought United got off to a good positive start in preseason. Quick and decisive decisions made on transfers and a more positive vibe overall.

But a week out for your first “meaningful” game and you’ve lost your new star CB. You have added a new Striker who’s going to need to play because Holjund is now out. No new midfielder (you need 2), you probably need another attacking player and you need a RB and another CB. I know you won’t get all those but to get top 4 you need to.

I don't think we need much for top 4.

Who are we competing against?

Liverpool - New manager no new signings.
Tottenham - No new additions to the starting 11. Ange will be gone by Christmas. They had the perfect recipe for a good year last season no European football and out of the cups in the first round. Still couldn't get it done.
Chelsea - New manager and they look absolutely woeful
Villa - Lost arguably their player of the season and will struggle with Champions League football.
Newcastle - Haven't brought anyone in but they struggled with European football and injuries last season which shouldn't happen this season plus have Tonali back.

I wouldn't judge too much from our pre-season because our best players are missing from it. Bruno Garnacho Mainoo Shaw all need to come back in to the side. Martinez missed the majority of last season we didn't have a back up striker at all. Shaw was rarely fit. Yoro is missing but will come back when he's fit. The manager isn't under as much scrutiny with the new contract and Onana will hopefully be less jittery. The sagas of Greenwood and Sancho are hopefully behind us. I think we'll finish on 83 points.

I expect you'll see us sign a RB CB and CM before the window closes. I don't think we need a forward player. We have about 12 players for 4 positions excluding the youngsters. I'd hope one or two leave if anything.

CAM - Bruno Mount Eriksen
RW - Garnacho Amad Sancho Pelestri Antony
LW - Rashford Garnacho Sancho
ST - Hojlund Zirkzee Rashford

For me.

City
Arsenal
United
Newcastle

Will be the top 4 next season.

I expect you have the 14th of Sept in your diary. I happen to be in Portsmouth playing poker that weekend so will get across to the game.

Unless new midfielders come in we won’t make top 4.

I don’t think we will be as bad as we were last season but we will still be well off the pace that City/Arsenal will set.

It is the same old issues players that we have that aren’t up to the standard are hard to move on and until they go we can’t really bring in anyone else.

The injuries to two players we’d expect to start is a kick in the knackers.

As already pointed out new (quality) midfielders are a must or we’ll struggle again, losing Yoro is a big blow as well as Hojlund. It’s hard enough when you have the right players in place the PL is a long hard season with very few easy games, I feel it’s going to be hard again going on the situation as it stands, if we get players I’ll maybe change my mind

Wouldn't pay too much attention to the final score, it was United that played all the football, their first goal was deflected, and the third clearly offside

Reflecting on the tour as a whole, don't know which were worse, the pitches or the Referees.

Always tricky summers when you have so many players who miss the tours due to international tournaments.

There's probably 6 of the starting XI players missing the tour so you have to wonder how much quality work will have been done while they are over there.

I would expect the serious stuff starts now when they return to Carrington there's just under 2 weeks with the full group to get ready for the serious stuff which starts against Fulham.

The community shield will probably be a good run out for those who haven't had a game yet, a chance to get 45-60 minutes under their belt. Probably will be similar for City not sure what the rules are these days for number of subs you can use in the community shield so there will be some players who will play the full 90 minutes.

The injuries are just a sucker punch they really knocked the wind out of my mood towards this season losing two important players.

ETH will have failed again if he fails to provide a new DM. It's the most important player in his set up. Casemiro is not up to the task. If we do not have a ball winning DM in our team it's another horror show waiting to happen.

Why is that ETH's fault?

The club has put all these new execs in charge it's down to them to count the beans and find the players now so if we they can't find the money to bring in new players that really isn't on the manager anymore. Not bringing in midfield reinforcements is really a failure by the club not the manager.

He can't say it in public but there's no way he wants to go into the new season with these midfield options behind closed doors he'll be telling them he needs some new midfielders but unless some of the current lot leave there's no money to replace them.

Well unfortunately he's the manager. He's the guy the press will hammer when we are getting battered with 80 shots a game. It's his style of play and he needs to go see those above him and make them understand what his system requires. To me if you want to be a turnover counter-attacking team a DM is your most important player.

I think Martinez could play the central DM role his passing and tackling is brilliant providing we had two more regular centre backs, we still need signings in midfield urgently though as cover and squad depth.

Point is he may well have said all these things to the money men but they've told him the account is empty.

We had to replace Varane and Martial and they've done that with Yoro and Zirkzee.

Everything else feels like it's sell before you buy which in a transfer market that's as flat as this one with everyone bricking it over all the PSR stuff isn't a great place to be.

If he doesn't get the players he wants then he's going to have to play a system that best suits what he has.

The bigger issue here is Utd have spent a fortune in transfer fees and wages on 3 midfielders since ETH took over and going into next season none of them would be in most peoples starting XI. Two of those players were very short term fixes and need to be replaced this summer but neither of them are likely to leave because no one else wants them.

I mean it would take some doing for you guys to be as bad as last year. But I’m also not sure you will finish much higher in the table either.

City, Arsenal and Liverpool and pretty much guaranteed to finish above you. I’d say that Villa and Spurs should too. Newcastle will be an interesting one and who knows with Chelsea I mean they are all over the place.

Right now your first XI isn’t any better and your squad overall is probably worse.

How so? I would say it is better even if we have only made a couple of signings. We now have a back up striker who isn’t named Martial. We have youngsters who are a year older and experienced. Amad will play far more than last year and we have Sancho back (I guess who knows for how long). Also fingers crossed we won’t lose Martinez and Shaw for large parts of the season.

The squad is nowhere near perfect but for me it’s already better equipped.
