Old Trafford Revamp

It's good to see some big thinking on this project there's a huge chance to redevelop a lot of land around the ground and build something that brings jobs not just on a match day.

To do that the council are going to need to play their part by investing in the infrastructure around the stadium get people to and from it.

The BBC reporting that Utd are expecting to make a decision on revamp vs new build by the end of 2024.

Sounds like they plan to demolish OT if they crack on with the new stadium

I suppose it is a bit big for the womens team

Probably be some outrage if they decided that Old Trafford was to run down for the men to play in but told the women to play there. Imagine any new stadium they would play quite a few games in.

You could also build a nice smaller stadium on that site for the women/youth

think you also have scheduling issues what happens when the men and women are at home on the same day? How is that going to work?

Would be good if they retained the pitch and maybe the lower tiers for women’s team and academy games but that probably gives you a 30k seater stadium which feels to big.

Also, the cost of remodelling it would be hefty and would it pay itself back? That has to be considered.

Assuming the scheduling isn’t an issue why not just get the women’s team playing at the new stadium?

The womens fixtures don't generally clash with the men's. Assume this is intentional to allow the men's fan base to attend womens games if they wanted to.

Think they did trial last season having the games back to back if viable. That may have just been Arsenal though.

Yeah I assume they try their best to keep them apart but must be tricky with Utd as so many of our games get selected for TV. Most games seem to kick off at lunch time on either Saturday or Sunday currently so it just means there might need to be late changes if men's games get selected for TV.

Just feel like if we're going to build this new mega stadium to last us another 50 years then we should look at bringing the womens team into that stadium with the mens team.

The cost of taking the current stadium down from 75k to 25-30k on the face of it looks very expensive and is going to take a long time to re-pay itself

Got rid of Foster then

Foster and Partners have been appointed as the master planners but at this stage it’s a design for all of the land they own not the stadium. The stadium design will be tendered once they’ve decided on redevelopment or new build.

The decision on that is expected by the end of the year.

The club is currently surveying all season ticket holders and members to hear what they want from the new stadium. My guess is more leg room, cheap seats and better beer.

Does sound like they’re going to follow the Wembley model of build a new stadium then develop the land around it.

a roof :p

The leg room at OT is diabolical I’m 6 foot and can’t put my knees straight out in front because they hit the seat in front, never been a season ticket holder but had plenty of freebies, that definitely needs addressing because there will be plenty of people that are taller than me.

I think they’ll go for a new stadium with all the money it could generate

The freebies I used to get were in the posh seats in the Stretford end. Nice

A mate used to get me the nice ones near SAF etc, I was a few seats from Rory McIlroy once.

Same here but even the seats there were cramped, think he told me each ticket was £4k a season and there was no more room than the seats I used to borrow in the stretford end lower.

Utd’s hospitality is miles behind other venues now.

I really like the fact they’re going for a big idea here.

I like the fact that we are getting a brand mew stadium.

But I'm a bit pissed they aren't putting as much focus in the team. Something needs to be done to get this team winning

Rome wasn’t built in a day. The rebuild will take two and most likely three summer transfer windows.

I get that but it never feels like we are 1 window away despite spending fortunes.

It is almost like the previous 2 summers have been written off again and this summer was year 1 of 3.

I'm not sure what the Zirkzee signing added to this team, seemed a bit of a rush job.

They were after David, which in my mind was a better signing. Spent a whole summer installing god knows how many chiefs, sounds like one came in and changed things last minute. Which is a problem with so many chiefs.

Surely we cant wait another 3 windows to get top 4 ffs

Certainly seems to be heading that way.

Thing is with PSR they can’t just blow a load of money on the team to fix everything in 1 summer. Utd had to sell well this summer to spend what we did because of the mistakes of the past.

Zirkzee gives us a different type of forward player he’s like Martial and can play back to goal.

David from the limited bits I’ve seen looks like another Hojlund type player.

The appointments were needed I don’t think it was overkill and everyone seems to have clear roles. The players that came were clearly targets we’d had all summer and we got them at sensible prices.

I’m not waiting 2 or 3 summers for top 4. After next summer we need to be looking like a title contender. He needs to get top 4 with the squad he’s got now.

Anyway stadium looks like it’s moving forward but feels like it’s a long way away from starting let alone being finished.

Would be surprised to see Utd’s new stadium being finished this decade.

yeah, thats all schematic. Takes years to design that

I hope we dont do a Spurs and new stadium = team suffers

Think it’ll be like Wembley the stadium is built first then everything else goes around it afterwards. When the new Wembley opened there was nothing around it.

The way they’re talking is there’s a lot of big infrastructure work to do to unlock land. There’s rail lines to divert and no doubt roads to upgrade. That’s where they want the government to step in with funding as the rail works are to increase line capacity which is something that government should pay for.

The big challenge will be unless they build a new ground next to the current one where do we play while the ground is renovated?

Different times under a different footballing structure. The new structure won’t get everything right, but the hope is they will get the majority right.

I know, was more a comment about these never ending 3 year cycles that solve nothing as managers get sacked and it’s start from scratch again.

Hopefully this one is the one that finally drives change.

The signs are positive that this time will be different but for it to work we need to be in the CL next season and the one after. This 1 year in 1 year out means we keep having to compromise.

I would have expected the older fans to favour a rebuild, being more sentimental. I guess not.

Would suspect they might want more modern facilities.

Easier access to concessions and toilets plus escalators rather than cramped stairs etc

We've all probably given up luxury for sentiment though at some point in life. I thought Old trafford would be very special to older fans.

Depends how much you remember. If you started going in the 70s/80s even early 90s the current stadium isn’t the one you grew up in.

As long as it’s built right next to the current ground not a lot else changes.

I guess for younger fans the concern will be pricing how much extra will the match going fan have to fork out to pay for the new stadium.
