Old Trafford Revamp

Given the ownership change will probably drag out given the current price hard to see these sort of projects starting any time soon.

Interesting though, sounds like the new stadium would be the most ideal.

Can still bring in matchday money and the final stadium can be more suitable to the modern game. And it sounds like the revamp would cost min 1b. Would probably creep up

Be gutted if we left Old Trafford, even if they built a state of the art 100,000+ all-seater stadium on nearby land and then downsized the current stadium to a 30,000 capacity for the Women/Reserve/Academy sides.

There's just nowhere like Old Trafford.

There is of course room for such sentiment, but likewise we need to move on. Some of the PL stadia in this day and age put OT to shame.
Manchester United = World Class with an enviable world wide support base. The stadium and facilities must match that.

It's hardly Maine Rd or Stamford Bridge in the 70's/80's. it's still an impressive stadium, and say United start building a new stadium today to be ready for the start of the 24/25 season, what happens if say Liverpool or Chelsea or the newest club to get bankrolled by dodgy money build an even more modern bigger stadium in the following years, are we gonna get fans saying our stadium is outdated again, and we need another new one in a decade??

Not sure what the size of the fanbase has got to do with it, 99% of them will never set foot inside the ground.

Old Trafford now isnt the stadium it was in the 80s every stand has been upgraded or knocked down so apart from the pitch everything is different.

If they develop the land around the ground it’ll still be basically in the same place and hopefully parts of the current stadium could be incorporated into the new design.

It isn’t the worst but it is no longer the best and with other top European sides modernising Utd will have to do the same.

It’s a huge project for the new owners to take on.

Some don't seem to recognise the stagnation of our club under the glazers.
The requirement for the worlds top clubs to have the very best stadia and facilities would appear to be lost on the meat and potato pie munchers

This a million times over. Don't see either Milan club building their own stadium because the San Siro is a million years old and big clubs shouldn't ground share. Imagine Real Madrid not playing at the Bernabau or Barca at the Nou Camp? You've all heard of La Bombonera and would jump at the chance to see Boca play there if the chance ever arose, and it's apparently a dump.

Spurs' world class stadium was a cool little thing for a while, but isn't helping them improve the product on the pitch. Ditto the Emirates, which was a millstone around the neck of Arsenal for years.

City could spend a bajillion quid on a flying stadium that tours the galaxy, and it wouldn't have a fraction of the soul or history or magic of OT. Money can't buy what we have in OT. Spend what it takes to fix it over building a new soulless concrete and plastic shell.

Thats fair enough. But fix it well

San Siro is about to close and be redeveloped, Bernabau is being redeveloped, Nou Camp is about to be redeveloped.

We aren’t talking about moving to a new site basically build a massive new stadium on the car park and knock the old one down.

Make sure the roof on the new one doesn’t leak and make the seats suitable for people over 5ft 5

It's in desperate need of repair, there's no doubt about that. Redevelop the dickens out of the place, but even if you build another one right beside the old one, it won't be the same. It's much more romantic that rational, or practical, but the ghosts go when the old OT goes.

The NY Yankees did exactly what you're suggesting. They've got a play field on the site of the old stadium, and you can stand where home plate was and envision the way it used to look. The new one is cool, but it's not the same, because all of the history took place next door.

@Cruella ne Ville I get you, you ae talking me round, but like I said previously it should be a proper job. Top notch refurbushment/modernisation with Green Credentials and Smart Features such as Alexa controlled LED floodlights which can change colour for special occasion's and presentations etc... and Smart Auto pitch watering/conditioning systems to help cure our infamous pitch problems, heated seats, green toilets, the list is endless.
And they either need to lower the stadium to match the pitch level or raise the pitch to match the stadium level, no sorry its the other way around. You cant have players rolling down hills all the time, it's not fecking Hackney Marshes.

I’ve been to the new one yanker stadium the issue is the ticket prices are insane so unless it’s the playoffs the place is only 1/3 full. Sadly it’s aimed at tourists like me willing to pay sky high prices rather than the locals. i sat in the gods watching them play the Red Sox in a stadium less than half full.

You will always have your memories he challenge is to make new history in the new stadium.

I didn't make it to the old Yankee Stadium, but I've been to the new one. Sat in the outfield bleachers to watch them play their city rivals the Mets, and didn't care what I paid because, like you, it was a tourist thing. Honestly, I thought wandering the park where the old stadium used to be (while enjoying a cheeky bevy or two) and the surrounding area was more nostalgic than the new stadium.

I'm 5'10" and built like a brick outhouse, and i've never had a problem. And flat roof, lot of rain, mmmmm

You're invited to a friends for a meal and a few sherbets, you enjoyed the meal, it was grrreat, but sat at the table you had the tiniest bit of discomfort because there wasn't quite enough leg room, then later on the settee again you weren't as relaxed as you'd be at home as their sofa was slightly lower than yours, but you enjoyed the drink, hic - on the way out as you tell the host you had a great evening, and we must do it again, do you mention the table and sofa, and hope they've changed both before next time, or refuse to go again until they do??

It's total bullshit driven by the Glazer out crowd, it's for 90+ minutes maybe once a fortnight ffs, and most people stand all game any way, and then there is always the option not to go ....

Moaning for moaning's sake.

SJR is going to be good news for us - I just feel it. Great news even. Imagine the feeling of when something so big that will make a difference begins. It'll be beautiful.

Far too much moaning about the Stadium, yes the old dear is getting on, but it is still somewhere very special, and every time you catch a glimpse of the pitch it instantly hits you "yep there is where I want to be", nothing in Europe touches that.

You can stick your soulless new Stadiums where the sun don't shine.

Yeah I would never want us to move to a new stadium. Revamp OT for sure but you lose your soul a little when you move stadiums.

OT is still one of the most special places to play and watch football. I would never want us to lose that.

I would've completely agreed, until I went to the new Wembley. It's a great stadium, a big improvement on what was there before.

Still, whatever happens to OT, it needs to be exceptional.

I was going to say very similar except with regards to the Spurs stadium.

First time you go there and it’s got that wow factor you walk in and think this is miles ahead of everything in the country.

Got quite emotional watching the Munich memorial service outside Old Trafford yesterday, and started thinking if the club did ever move to a new Stadium it just wouldn't be the same, even if it was built on the same site similar to what Spues did.

Isn't Old Trafford now sort of like Triggers Broom though? The North Stand was totally rebuilt and the east/west stands had new tiers bolted on top plus the lower tiers renovated. I'm guessing the only bit that's probably still true to some of the history is the south stand but even then the dressing rooms/tunnel were moved to the corner as part of the redevelopment.

It is time for that stadium to evolve into something more modern and if it's done well I'm sure if can retain it's original charm with well placed nods to history but the old girl needs some proper tlc.

I like the idea of a big plan to not only rebuild the stadium but also bring a bit of extra life into the area, the club owns loads of land around the ground that could be developed as part of this project.

Only fools and mad horses want a total rebuild.

Could maybe knock Gary Neville's hotel down, preferably with him in it, and build a themed area for match-going fans in it's place.

Kinnell @jsp, you're setting one hell of a pace to get your mitts the February poster of the month gong aren't you? ;)

Yeah because that little slither of land is the only place they could build something like that.

I reckon as part of the re-development they'll end up buying that hotel off them.

It's a friggin eye-sore, he should never have got planning permission to build it.

Why not?

Brings jobs to the local area and more hotel capacity.

I've never paid much attention to it.

Sat in your living-room in a different part of the country you probably wouldn't.

Fair point but probably been to the ground 10 times since it was built tend to come in from the other side though so never really gone anywhere near it. Think we talked about trying to go in before one game but heard you need to get their stupidly early and pay to get in so just went to our usual pub before the game instead.

I thought it blended in quite well with the stadium on that side as it's mostly glazing.

Quite nice to have something that looks relatively new around the stadium.

If you travel by road from the North of the Country you can't miss it, unless you do a massive detour and it sticks out like a sore-thumb, it was nothing but a vanity project from Nev and his chums, as in don't you forget about us. Not much chance of that is there, topping up their coffers with negative comments when the press ring 'em up, and Nev being Nev.

We travel up from the south so tend to come in through Altrincham then park up near the cricket ground a few times we've parked in one of the clubs car park that's by the container yard on the other side of the ground then come in by the ticket office. .

Only time I remember being near it was when we used to get tickets for a corporate bit in the quadrant in that corner, had a nightmare the first time we went trying to find the bloody entrance for it.

If it wasn't making money it would probably be shut by now, I would imagine it makes a tidy profit.

Doubt the owners will be relying on monies from it.
