I reckon the McTominay ship might have sailed with them, think they've got their eyes on bigger targets now they've made the champions league.

Maybe we can play the 'taking a key player from a top 4 rival' card that worked so well for City back in the day? Maguire + McFred + Dalot/AWB = actual transfer kitty?

From what I gather Tonali had a bit of a dip in form last season but prior to that he looked a real talent.

Remember him coming on and having a good impact in games during the Euro's for Italy and seemed to be able to do a bit of everything.

The suggestion is he didn't really want to leave Milan but they need the money but they're building a pretty handy midfield up there in Georgie Land.

Still think they need to do a bit more work in padding out the squad the rumours are they're going for Maddison from Leicester again this summer.

Champions League football will test them big time next season those extra midweek games take a toll on you and I'm guessing they'll be a 4th pot team so they could get a hellish group.

Linked alongside Brighton to Livramento today, Southampton want circa £30m, Newcastle hoping to do a deal at half that.

Great going forward but can't defend for toffee ....

Big gamble off the back of that injury, was looking a hell of a prospect in his first season.

Be a good under study to Trippier who they’re going to need to rotate a bit more next season.

Fee agreed with Leicester for Harvey Barnes.

Saint-Maximam is off to Saudi Arabia.

Some FFP shenanigans going on here. Newcastle needed to bring some money in, lo and behold a Saudi Arabian club owned by the same fund offer to buy one of their players.

I think they're paying about £30m which isn't ridiculous in the current market for players.

If he's made a full recovery from that knee injury he could be a great signing for them, that's a big transfer fee though.

Trippier was such a big player for them last season but I do think he dipped a bit towards the end of the season and with all the extra games they need competition.

Still look at the signings they've made this summer £140m spent and not sure they've really improved their starting XI but they had on paper given themselves a bit more depth in the squad. Tonali looks like a starter probably comes in for Longstaff and will give a bit more quality on the ball.

This is a massive season for Howe he needs to prove last season was no fluke and this team are ready to compete for the top 4 again. People maybe under estimated them last season but this season they'll be ready for them and may change the way they play against Newcastle.

Tad steep. I wonder if they're panicking at the lack of impactful signings so far this summer. They've brought in a DM and two wingers alongside Livramento and sold a LW, backup striker and keeper. Not really sure they're any further ahead.

Despite being ultra defensive at times last season, they scored 10 more goals and conceded 10 less than we did last season, and we've taken strides to remedy both those totals. Unless they bring in a few crackers in the next few weeks, I think they'll struggle this season.

I think they have done some good business so far this summer. Tonali is a very good player and will really improve their midfield class.

Barnes is also a decent signing, he’s not got the flair of Saint-Maximin but I think he’s more impactful and consistent.

Livramento is probably being bought on potential as well as the here and now performances. He’s looked good at Saints before his injury issues, so will provide good competition for Trippier.

Strange move for the lad himself, he needs game time after more than a year out and he ain't getting it at Newcastle unless Trippier moves over to LB, can see him being sent-out on loan in January and being forgotten.

Wondering if Valentino will throw his hat in with Scotland, qualifying because of his Mum, as there are numerous players ahead of him for England and Portugal, saying that Scotland are not short at RB, as you were ....

They've been really poor, reminded me a bit of united, a bit clueless in the last third

I think if Isak and Guimares are a little off the boil then they struggle.

I don’t expect them to be top four this season to be honest. There will be a lot of pressure from playing in the CL and teams will definitely respect them a little more with what they achieved last season.

A tricky first three games to this season to defend them a little bit but no way they should have lost today.

Are they also in crisis?

6 points from the opening 5 games.

Just a bit of context and change of topic.

They got all the plaudits last season but they’ve struggled this season despite significant investment this summer.

All this before the champions league kicks in.

Less investment than us, and we also have the CL coming.

They've also played city and Liverpool, and their loss to Brighton was away

We should not be comparing ourselves with them anyway.

They spent close to 200m this summer. Tonali, Barnes, Livramento and Hall

They threw the game away at home to liverpool 1-0 up Vs 10 men and lost.

They finished just behind us last season just felt they’re a worthwhile comparison. Had 3 tough games in their opening 5 (2 away and 1 home) lost all 3.

Hall is loan.

They spent 150m euros and we spent 190m

Roughly, according to transfer market

Hall is loan.

They spent 150m euros and we spent 190m

Roughly

For FFP purposes it’s a loan they have an obligation to buy for around 40m at the end of this season so include that and it’s roughly even.

Just highlighting another side that’s had a tough start to the season.

I wonder how many times a team scores 8 with 8 different goal scorers

Looks like Tonali is in big trouble being investigated for gambling by the Italian FA and could face a significant ban.

He has claimed he has a gambling addiction.

Not what you want from your new £60m superstar signing and you wonder what Milan knew about this when they sold him in the summer.

Reports in Italy are that Tonali will get a 10 month ban with a further 8 months suspended on the basis that he attends counselling for his addiction and assists programmes to discourage others from falling into the same habits he did.

His ban will cover all football worldwide.

10 months confirmed today. Seems light considering he was reportedly betting on games he was involved in.

Think they said he bet on the teams he played for at the time but not games he was actually playing in so there's no suggestion he was trying to fix matches which is the maximum penalty.

There's 8 months suspended no top of the 10 so if he gets caught again (which could easily happen if his addiction is legit) then he'll end up with a longer ban.

10 months to me seems pretty fair.

I'd say football needs to have a proper look at it's relationship with gambling though you can't hammer players when every 30 seconds during a football match you see adverts for gambling sites. Football might not like it but I'd ban all gambling sites from sponsoring clubs and advertising in football grounds and I'd ban all gambling adverts during live broadcasts of matches.

I'm not against gambling we are all free to do it and as individuals we have to moderate how we do it but the level of advertising you are hit with when watching sport is ridiculous. It doesn't need to be part of the game and part of the culture around watching football especially given how easy it is to do it now.

The ban on gambling advertisements on shirts has happened hasn’t it?

Clubs are allowed to see out their current sponsorship deals though.

I think to a degree they've started self regulating from memory they agreed not to show ads at half time anymore but they're allowed to show them right up to kick off. Personally I think they should be banned from the moment the build up starts to the moment it ends personally.

I think they've agreed something on main shirt sponsors that kicks in from either next season or the one after but I think they're still allowed to be on the sleeve or back of shirts and to have advertising on the electronic boards around the pitch.

From memory this was the gambling industry trying to self regulate a bit to show they're doing something rather than do nothing and have someone else come in and impose strict rules on them.
