Michael Carrick | Match Performance Thread

League Cup: Northampton 1-3 Manchester United - 21st September 2016

His range of passing has been missed this season.

His control and calming influence in midfield has been missed too. As we know from experience, possession not all that but Carrick has that capability of playing 100 passes a game which i'm not sure the others can.

Great finish too by the way. His ability from range is something I think he has underused during his career, think he could have scored more but I suppose that's because he's selfless in his play and why others benefit so much from playing with him.

Premier League: Swansea City 1-3 Manchester United - 6th November 2016

He was under little pressure, but his performance highlighted the need to find a player of his ilk.

Absolutely. Prem should be priority and don't see why he can't play every weekend instead of playing cup games that aren't as important.

He was an assured presence in our midfield. Did well to move the ball forward from the midfield. Need for him to play every week. But if he does then what happens with Herrera?

For me he plays instead of Fellaini.

Europa League: Manchester United 4-0 Feyenoord - 24th November 2016

Another 90 tonight. We'll see if the "can't play 3 games in a week" thing is genuine on Sunday. Fact he started tonight just shows how hard it is to replace him. He makes the game easier for those around him. Even at the age of 35 and having played on Saturday, those around/ahead of him (Pogba, Mata, Rooney, Mkhitaryan) were able to play with freedom as he allowed them too. Just wonder if Herrera will come in for him on Sunday.

I think of all the positions we may need to strengthen getting a top class replacement for Carrick is going to be the most important.

Absolutely. A position that gives security to the back 4 and allows those ahead to play with more freedom. Hopefully there is someone lined up to come in, there aren't too many names that jump out at me though, I listed a few i've read in another thread but know little about any of them. Doesn't have to be exactly like Carrick but we do need someone who can play the role and play it to a high level.

Definitely. 7 wins, 1 draw and 22 goals in the 8 games Carrick has started this season. We look a different side when he plays, talk that he will get another year here but hope that doesn't brush the issue under the carpet a bit - he still needs replacing.

Premier League: Manchester United 0-0 West Bromwich Albion - 1st April 2017

Saw someone suggest it during the game. Was today Carrick's GNev moment? Didn't get game time at start of season, had a good month or 2 but has been poor in 2017.

I think the fact he's having his testimonial at the end of this season rather than the start of next one says to me that he's going to retire in the summer.

It was frustrating not seeing him in teh team at the start of the season but Mourinho needed to see all his options as he was obviously looking for long term rather than short term solutions to our problems.

I didn't see the game in full only highlights but didn't see anything there to suggest it was a GNev moment it looked more like misfiring strikers again rather than serious issues in midfield and I don't recall him having particularly bad games in 2017 still think we generally look better with him in the team than not in the team.

I personally didnt think he was that bad but either way we need to be finding a replacement quickly. Mind you i have been saying that for about 5 years.

It's a damning enditement on our recruitment that we've signed 6 CM's I think since Fergie left Blind, Fellaini, Herrera, Schniederlin, Schweinstieger & Pogba 3 of them signed as specialist DM's and none of them have been able to see off Carrick he is still in our best team be it in a 2 or a 3 man midfield. Of the guys who've come on Herrera/Pogba have proven good enough but they aren't guys to replace Carrick they're more attacking players I don't think there are many like Carrick left I mean some of the people England played ahead of him in his role were laughable Barry, Parker, Gerrard and people wonder why we couldn't keep the ball against anyone half decent.

Having a guy who can take the ball off the defence and get it quickly and accurately to your attacking players is vital Arsenal have been without Cazorla all season and there midfield doesn't work & City are having to play Yaya in that role a lot.

I thought the Gary Neville comparison was a bit over the top but he did struggle and has been since the turn of the year. Agree that reason for testimonial in June might well be because he won't be here in August.

He's been great for us, better than some think or realise.

I don't think he's quite got to the GNev point he's not even at the cynical Paul Scholes fouling point which is sort of how Scholes was towards the end he knew he couldn't recover when players ran past him so he'd just take yellow cards.

Think he was a slow burner for a lot of fans because he didn't really stand out he didn't score many goals or provide many assists he just got on with his job and it was probably that last season under Fergie where he finally won the majority over.

I agree he's probably dipped but hasn't the whole team how many times have we played well in 2017? Leicester away is one that's stood out to me the team looked absolutely on it's backside before the internationals all those games finally caught up to everyone I think.

You just have to measure him by the success 10 seasons 5 league titles, 1 european cup (x2 runner up), 1 FA Cup, 3 League Cups and in all those seasons he's made a solid contribution and ask Spurs fans it took them ages to properly replace him
