Mason Mount | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

Definitely don't retire it. I don't support that.

We need to find a great player and let him wear it.

I don't believe in curses.

The whole thing is just a marketing gimmick to be honest. The number 7 isn’t iconic the players who wore it were.

Take it away until someone worthy emerges.

It should not be handed out to new signings

Give it to Bruno.

Should be retired. It was iconic.

Look on the bright side you wont see much of the 7 shirt, he`ll be out soon enough getting treatment. :(

The last player to wear it who wasn't a new signing would have been Valencia? He took it on after Owen left and gave it up after a season and went back to number 25.

The shirt was vacant for 1 seasons once Valencia return it.

Looking back there's only been two players who changed to the number 7 which was Beckham and Valencia everyone else who's had it as a designated squad number was a new signing.

I feel like if Cavani came earlier and took the shirt he would have been one of the best to hold it. Shame we got him so late in his career. And then obviously Ronaldo wanted the shirt when he arrived again.

Yeah Cavani was definitely a player who would have a much better reputation if he'd not gone to PSG and played his prime years in that league. Not that he isn't remembered as a great player but I think he was a lot better than he maybe got credit for.

His second season with us was a disaster they worked hard to convince him to stay for another year (which wasn't his plan) then got Ronaldo in at the last minute and made him the deputy which obviously p*ssed him off and he gave the impression of not really being interested.

I agree about Cavani. It honestly wasn't until he joined us and I saw what he could do each week that I finally gave him the credit he deserved. I didn't rate him before that. So perhaps he didn't get the respect he deserved.

As for Mount - perhaps it's the #7 shirt that is cursing him, eh jsp? ;p

I just can't see him ever being good for us. I think Chelsea got his best years and they know it, he doesn't even look half the player he was. After all of these injuries there is only one thing that would of happened, and that's the loss of mobility, speed and various other things. I know because It was the same for me, every time I was injured when I was young it made me slowly worse.

I always liked Cavani thought he was a maybe just a bit below the absolute world class strikers of his generation but he wasn't far behind the likes of Kane/Lewendowski/Benzema/Suarez. He was an absolute grafter as well wasn't afraid of doing the hard work. Think his reputation in England suffered because he had a couple of poor games in the CL against English sides.

I think with Mount we still don't really know if he's actually any good as he's never been fit enough to have a run in the team and show what he can do. When he's been fit I think he's actually been pretty good he's a really smart player who doesn't rely on speed.

It's just hard to see light at the end of the tunnel this is 3 seasons in a row where he's hardly kicked a ball due to various injuries. I can't think of to many players who've had those sort of problems and suddenly shaken it off.

If we go out of the Europa League the club might be better off just saying he won't play again this season and trying to put him on some sort of long term rehab plan through the summer that gives him time to fix his problems and get his body absolutely right to start next season and give him the best possible chance.

As much as I don't rate Mount, I hope he can stay fit and at least provide us an option in attack. We've been sorely missing options for a lot of the season. He's going to have to stay fit and consistently put in some good performances if he wants to change my mind on his current ability. Our league is tough on your body and if he can't handle it for sustained periods of time he's of no use.

You have to feel for him a bit though, it's been a rough couple of years.
