Mason Mount | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

Apart from the point that we didn't actually need him, we basically forked out £50m for someone to keep Shaw company in the physio's room

At the time we signed him he was meant to be the replacement for Eriksen and the plan was to play him as a centre mid.

That in itself was a massive gamble as he'd never played that position and within a few games it looked like they'd ditched that plan.

I said at the time it was a bad move going for him he already injury issues.
Another waste of money

International break coming up so maybe we'll see him for the last few months of the season.

Fully expecting he'll be injured again before playing.

This guy is ridiculous; he has to be one of the club's worst ever signings.

He's been of no use whatsoever.

I'm hoping he can finally stay fit though and Ruben can show us why he has such high praise for what I would only call a nothing player.

I don't fancy his chances.

He's managed 33 appearances in almost 2 seasons which is embarrassing and there were certainly red flags around persistent injury issues in his final season at Chelsea. Prior to that he'd actually been pretty solid for them.

£55m for a guy with 1 year left on his contract was way over the top and I'm sure Sir Jim would be looking at how the club ended up paying that for a guy who certainly had to be considered a risky signing.

It's these sort of mistakes that cannot be repeated in the future.

In terms of worst signings I wouldn't put him at number 1 but he's got to be around the top 10.

Once a player has 3 seasons where he's constantly in and out with injuries you kind of have to accept that won't change.

Hopefully he can have a clean run until the end of the season when he’s back. I really felt for him when he got injured last time, he clearly worked hard to get back but sadly his body broke down.

I would never criticise a player for getting injured. Sometimes players are just more injury prone than others.

The signing itself can definitely be criticised. I was never in favour of it when it happened and it’s proved to be a bit of a disaster. However IF he can keep himself fit I think he will be an asset to the squad.

It's a funny one because on paper he's a much better fit for what Amorim is trying to do than what ETH seemed to be planning to do.

Was hard to see him working in a 2 man midfield which seemed to be the plan under ETH but as a number 10 in the Amorim system it would suit him and potentially fit him in to the side with Bruno for certain games.

Sell him to who? No one is going to give us £30m for a guy who's injured all the time.

We're basically stuck with him for at least another 2 seasons.

Like Shaw you can't plan your squad around either of these them being fit, if they are fit then consider it a bonus.

Do you consider Martinez injury prone yet?

I did say he was heading that way.

But yeah, selling Mount will be difficult.

Yes but I’d say they’re slightly different situations.

Martinez has been seriously unlucky with 2 horrific injuries sustained in matches. Mount just seems to be on a never ending cycle of fit for 3-4 weeks out for 5-6 weeks.

For some reason I find the players like Mount more annoying. Probably because you never know when they’ll be back at least with Martinez you know he’s gone for a long time.

Yeah, agree. Out of the three of them Shaw is easily the most annoying.

Yeah with Martinez you see him going off on the stretcher and you know it’s bad.

Shaw and Mount just limp off and you get told it’s nothing serious, a few weeks out then the weeks become months.

One thing is for sure, they'll all return lesser players than before. The question is, how much have all these injuries taken from them?

Hard to see any of them returning to their absolute best on a consistent basis.

I had such high hopes for Shaw a few years ago. Genuinely thought he'd become the best LB in the world within these last two years... but now he's 29 and you know the rest. Such a shame.

Yep it looked like he was over the injuries but they’ve come back big time in the last few years.

It is such a shame. Such a quality player when he’s fit but sadly these injuries will probably take a toll and even if can become injury free I doubt he will be a marauding left back anymore. I would even say that he is more likely to become a third centre back in the Amorim system.

Yeah, the wing-back positions would probably be too much for him at this point. It would probably push his body to the limit and break him again.

LCB would work for him. I wouldn't hate trying him at CCB too, he's got good awareness, ball control, and can see a pass. I think he'd be able to make space and find our midfielders quite comfortably.

Hopefully we'll have some proper Mount stuff to talk about soon. He's close to a return!

I look forward to reading about his injury setback during the up coming international break.

Maybe a chance to make the bench this weekend?
