Marcus Rashford | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

Almost scored a beauty but faded a little bit second half.

Form is a lot better this season

I’ve been quietly impressed with him so far this season, there seems to be a bit more pep in his step. Started the season slow but the last few weeks there have been some shoots of the old Marcus.

Unlucky last night not to score. Was a lovely little run.

He was poor, possibly his worst performance of the season.

Where will fit in under the new manager?

I’m not totally sure he fits that well into an Amorim style team, I would say Amad and Garnacho would be ahead of him. But we will see I guess when he arrives and starts to implement his style.

The question I worry about is have we already seen the best of Rashford?

It is hard to imagine at this point in his career he’s going to reach the consistency level required to be a world class player.

We will get flashed but just don’t see him ever being consistent.

I think he peaked a while ago, he wasn’t good today he’s like a headless chicken he runs aimlessly towards players then doesn’t know what to do when the moment comes to make a choice.
Maybe Amorim can reinvent him who knows?

I just worry that he has never really kicked on.

He’s a player in his prime still playing like it’s his first season or two as a pro.

Has he missed the boat now.

For me I don't think he should be starting unless we perhaps move him through the centre for a while and play more fluidly. Garnacho is better down the left and Amad is better down the right.

That was a really poor performance, prior to yesterday I would say him and Garnacho were rightly being alternated. But based on yesterday garnacho has to start.

What has happened though, Amad has stated his place as first choice.

From what I’ve seen and read of the Amorim style I don’t see how Rashford fits. And Amorim needs to make a big decision and that may mean leaving him out. United have definitely seen the best of Rashford and both parties need a fresh start.

It's up to him to rise to the challenge.

Amorim is going to ask him to do certain things within the system and he needs to do them but it's hard to really see him establishing himself as a leader of the team in the Amorim era.

Everyone is going to be starting from scratch under the new manager so he's got a chance to impress him.

I would be hesitant to say we’ve seen the best of Rashford but he really does need to up his game. The new manager bounce might help that but it is hard to imagine he will ever be a consistent player.

I’m not sure he will be an automatic pick in an Amorim system so he may have to make do with being a sub and back up to Hojlund. But I guess it’s all guesswork right now about how Amorim will deploy our players.

I think he'll get sold, potentially get some good money for him, and he doesn't really suit the new manager I would say

I don't think he's going anywhere anytime soon.

He's on £300k a week that puts him at the top of pretty much every club in the worlds pay structure.

If Amorim can't work with him then maybe he'd end up going out on loan next season but why would anyone buy him?

Non existent after the goal.

He is not a centre forward

He put a tap in away from a very good cross, then what? Very little he doesn’t link up with players then loses interest and stops running.

A tap in that was put on a plate.

You have to do more than that I’m afraid.

His lack of urgency to go and engage and press is infuriating. His ambling around is so obvious and alarming.

He's still a better option than Hojlund and Zirkzee sadly. Some changes here needed in Jan

You’ve surely got to be disappointed that in Amorim’s first team selection he picks Rashford to start… And as the central striker too.

Based on the majority of his performances the last year or two there’s a case to say he shouldn’t start. But to start as the central striker? I mean that’s got to be disappointing. And I know Hojlund has struggled and that Zirkzee is just no good but still.

It's one of the few times I'll agree with you. And I'm shocked people aren't calling the team selection out today.

Rashford up top. No Ugarte.

But it's all good. ETH didn't pick the side. So no issues.

What do you think the response would have been on here today with that performance against a side that will be relegated under ETH? Am I delusional thinking there'd have been a lot of abuse from the usual suspects? Or did we play much better and I didn't see it?

Personally find it embarrassing the same people attacking ETH can defend that performance. It was pathetic. We were outplayed by what is fundamentally a championship side and saved by the keeper.

They'll quickly realise that 3-4-3 won't work here.

I mean to be fair Ugarte was away on international duty in South America so I think that one wasn’t a surprise. And I think Amorim said he picked his side based on those he was able to spend good time with in training. So some of the selections aren’t a huge surprise but still.

ETH said he wouldn't be able to use Ugarte properly until the international breaks before Christmas has finished. That drew abuse from that crowd.

I just think you call a poor performance a poor performance. We were awful. Got outplayed by a championship side.

Their xG was over 2. Ours below 1. For the second time this season. However the last time out xg was under 1 so was the other side and we were playing a champions league side not a relegation side.

Performance was pathetic the people defending it even more so.

Shocked that people aren’t piling in on Amorim who has had a few training sessions with the players and is still working out who is the best fit for his formation? You shouldn’t be that shocked to be honest. For someone who is all for giving managers time, you’re sticking the knife in early to the new man.

There are mitigating factors yesterday for the performance, like I said he has only had a few training sessions with the players, he had guys arriving back from all corners of the globe and still a fair few players coming back from injuries.

I think you’ll find eventually only 4 or 5 players that started yesterday will ultimately be in his best eleven.

The fixation on team selection and especially Ugarte is a little baffling. Him being away on International duty was clearly the factor there. Sure it wasn’t Amorim’s preference to not start him, like it wasn’t Chris Wood not starting for Forest against Arsenal but International duty sometimes makes it necessary.

There is no reason why 3-4-3 won’t work, if the players are good enough then they will adapt.

At some point got to let it go about ETH. Yesterday was a totally different situation and it’s not as straight forward as saying ‘oh if that was ETH being in charge, imagine the response’.

Also Ipswich have taken points from Villa and Spurs recently so let’s not discount them as pure relegation fodder.
