Marcus Rashford | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

Think what we've seen is play counter attacking football and Rashford can thrive the moment you start changing that he starts to struggle as he receives the ball higher up the pitch with less space to work with.

He doesn't really do the pressing side of things well and he isn't a player who recycles possession and keeps the ball in the attacking third as he likes to be direct rather than patient.

His best spells in and England shirt also came when England played a more counter attacking 4-3-3 style and often he was used as an impact sub when the game had become more stretched and he had that space to exploit.

If Utd want to be a serious title challenger they are never going to do that playing counter attacking football.

As I mentioned

the first season we played different football, didn't play out from the back so much* and it suited him more.

Which is what I have been saying. Different manager/tactics, different Marcus

* I'm not sure this whole squad has been coached in this very well

You mean tactics many moaned about because United shouldn't play as a counter attacking team and we shoild control the ball?

I guess many did

But I am not cristiscing anybody here so i don't know why you are having a pop.

This manager is using tactics that don't suit Marcus is the point.

Never did us, Liverpool, City, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest(the best i'[ve ever seen at it) any harm, in fact i'd say it was those teams ability to counter-attack that won them the League.

You need to be able to do it but it can't be your plan A.

I just feel the top sides dictate the way the game is going to be played no matter who they are up against I don't think your plan A.

That seems to be giving Rashford a free pass for his poor form and laying it all on the manager. Managers are going to have different ways of doing things and you have to adapt as a player.

If a new manager comes in then it could suit Rashford even less!

He has take a huge chunk of the blame.

I think he's trying to be fair, and you're just dismissing it as manager hate. That will be frustrating.

no I didn't

I said a different manager, that doesn't mean replacing ETH, as I said he probably should have left.

You put two and two and made 5

I can’t believe some still defend Rashford. His performances on the field have been poor for a long time now (and he’s always been very inconsistent) and things he’s done off the field have shown he lacks the mentality to fix his performance issues.

At this point in his career the lows outweigh the highs. When he’s bad he’s bad for long periods not just a handful of games.

The only person who had the cojones to bin Rashford, was the one we all clutched at our collective pearls at in the summer and said he should never come close to managing us.

I think @Mr C has a fair point there was a time under ETH where we did play a style that suited Rashford in his first season which was more direct and counter attacking but since we've changed that style more towards what ETH wants a slower build up and more pressing from the front Rashford's performances have declined.

If we were to change manager I don't think the new manager is going to take us back to being a counter attacking side which means Rashford is in the same situation.

A top side is never going to build its attack to suit Rashford he's got to learn how to play in different systems and impact games consistently either at Utd or wherever he ends up.

So it comes to what we don't know is someone trying to teach Rashford and he just isn't capable of doing the job or is he being left to work it out for himself and struggling.

Rashford because of his wages and profile is going to be judged against the very best in the world in his position and we all know he is struggling to meet that standard. We all want him to bang in 30 goals again this season but it's very hard to see it happening.

Anyway I thought he was probably a 7/10 vs Liverpool and in 2 games he's created 3 very good chances for his other attackers and cost himself a goal with a silly offside at Brighton.

Don’t encourage him! :p

Needed that goal and had another decent effort second half.

Spent the international break working hard hopefully that hard work with confidence will get him on the sort of run we know he’s capable of.

Really good to hear he's been doing extra work during the break. That's the kind of commitment we want from every player.

Chuffed he's scored. Let's hope the sauce does truly flow.

He posted it on his socials did some one on one coaching sessions and some boxing training.

Might be a bit of self promotion but he’s doing the right things whether he shares that with fans or not.

Amazing what a couple of goals can do for your confidence. Hopefully he can continue to kick in and be more like the Rashford we all know he can be.

if anyone can find the goals for last night.....I missed it

It might be on Canal+ catch up I suppose

Hopefully he finds that flow that brings the calmness to his finishing.

When he’s not scoring he’s so rash tries hitting it to hard rather than pick his spot.

The training he did during the international break maybe paying off.

He’s right to call out Redknapp for that nonsense.

Man Utd vs Twente

Thought he played well

Put one on a plate for his two fellow attackers first half but neither gambled. He should have been raging at them over that.

He is looking more confident which is great to see. That bit of skill in the first half was like the Rashford of old - shame our attackers were slightly on their heels.

His was work rate/effort in the second half was the best I’ve seen in a long time. I was surprised he was replaced and not Garnacho.
