Marcus Rashford | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

It’s a fine margin when you make those runs in behind and it’s normally something he times well but on Saturday he got it wrong to many times.

Being offside twice on crosses was very basic stuff that he shouldn’t be doing. Getting caught once was sloppy but twice was stupid and it cost the team a goal.

I think some of it is down to confidence he’s desperate to get a goal so he’s going early rather than keeping his cool and making sure he does the first bit right which is being onside.

The positive is he has kept making the runs rather than just give up.
 
Lots of good players get caught offside loads, it means absolutely nothing. Inzaghi did just fine for goals.

Shearer can't even say Amad, the goon.
 
Inzaghi was never quick he knew he had to play on the margin to get in and he didn’t have VAR to grass him up either so for him it was a gamble worth taking.

As I said the runs in behind I can forgive they are really hard to time and so much relies on the ball being released at the perfect time, there’s only so much you can do to time the run it’s all about the ball being released on time.

Standing offside twice when the ball is crossed in is just pathetic he could see when the crosses were coming in he just made a really poor decision.
 
Did ok today.

I do wonder if he’s maybe lost a bit of his speed off the mark which is why he’s struggling one vs one now but that could easily be confidence.

One another day he bags a couple of assists and the workrate seemed to be there.
 
I thought he did alright.

He turns back a lot, but there's rarely someone in the middle.

Think he gets a lot of over criticism
 
He needs an overlapping full back to be at his best most wide players do but I think we have to accept that Rashford is not a world class player.

Doesn’t mean he isn’t a good player.
 
Refused a 1-on-1 with Konate which really annoyed me.. He often stifles our attacks. We need wingers on both sides who can be direct and challenge the fullbacks. I would have started with Diallo and Garno on the wings today.
 
He was United’s best attacker. Faint praise, I know.

He is a limited footballer without explosive pace. It’s a worry.
 
Was ok? He was below average again. Killed attacks because he’s a one trick pony that without his pace offers very little.
 
I'd love to be able to allow him to go play in a functioning team to test out whether it's our system/style that is causing all of his issues. I'm almost certain if he played on Arsenal's left he'd be brilliant.

Can't ignore the form he is in for very much longer though.
 
For what it’s worth I don’t think he’s lost a whole of speed judging by his little burst to the touch line in the first few minutes. However my fear is always with him is that once he does lose some speed then he’s going to become quite ineffective.

If he doesn’t improve this season then if we can I think it’s time to cash in. Hate to say it because I love what he’s done as a player here and being a homegrown lad but his inconsistency is not what we need if we are to challenge again.
 
He put two excellent crosses in that Zirkzee muffed his lines on.

All the other times, nobody there, whats he meant to do, burst to the line and cross to nobody?
 
I hate to say it but I agree with Jamie Carragher:

I've said it once and I'll say it again, if Marcus Rashford is Manchester United's best attacking player, they're not winning a league or a European Cup.

The difference between Rashford and Salah is night and day.

There aren't many Salah's in the world of football.

he's just not as bad, or or he's not the fault of the side, many make out.

Getting a lot of unfair stick in my view. He's a decent player, not a special player
 
Salah is just one example. I could name several attackers who are better. The season where Rashford scored 30 goals is looking like an outlier.
 
I think the stick can be a little unfair but also warranted at times. The inconsistency of Rashford is so frustrating, he has it in his locker to do special things but he really doesn’t grab a game by the scruff of the neck when the team is down. He’s an experienced player but still looks a little timid in times of adversity.

I have no doubt that if we didn’t need to address the defence and midfield this summer then a winger would have been on the transfer agenda.

I think that’s a kop out to try and rationalise Rashford’s form. He’s been inconsistent under many managers.

Why would he be different under a new manager.

No one is blaming Rashford for the mess.
 
As I said, he often has nobody to pass to.

Last season there was a piece by Shearer showing all the runs Marcus was making, but he never received the ball, so he's stopped making all those runs.
 
I think we've seen enough from Rashford under various managers to know it's not the managers that are holding him back.

Even at times when Liverpool were a mess under Klopp a guy like Salah continued to deliver goals for them.

Rashford just isn't that guy he's nowhere near that level and there's enough evidence now to say that this is the final version of Rashford I don't think there's more room for development. There's a lot of ability but consistency is the key the top players deliver over and over and over again and Rashford just can't do that.
 
can we stop the Salah comparisson, nobody thinks he is that good, not many players are.

Well, I have just said why I think he would be better under a different manager. and one way or another he should find out.
 
The way he's played the last 12 months he's more like the lads the top sides bring off their bench than their starters.

So yeah lets forget Salah is he better than Gakpo or Trossard or Doku?

Well unless he sorts out his form he won't be moving anywhere top sides aren't going to be looking at him and thinking he makes us better.

Why is it a sad day? They produced a good player who's scored lots of goals for the club but he didn't kick on to become a world class player. That's hardly failure.
 
I can't go onto it, because people will think I have an ETH agenda, when I'm actually desperate for him to succeed.

So I'll leave this for now.

Rashfords best ever season was under which manager?
 
Think he's had good spells under every manager but he can't sustain it.

Injuries were a factor in his earlier years but that's not been a problem for him in the last 2 seasons.

Confidence is clearly a massive factor for him when he's got it he is a top player but when he hasn't his game falls apart and he becomes a liability.

Yeah the same manager. Highlighting that it's probably a Marcus problem not a manager one especially as this is typical for Marcus to have seasons of poor form. Easy to make excuses for the players when you have a premade one already though.

It's on Marcus to sort this out he must know he isn't playing good enough but he did actually create to great chances yesterday.
 
As I mentioned

the first season we played different football, didn't play out from the back so much* and it suited him more.

Which is what I have been saying. Different manager/tactics, different Marcus

* I'm not sure this whole squad has been coached in this very well
