Manuel Ugarte | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

Gets through a hell of a lot of work every game and thought he was very good tonight. Also never shirks a physical battle. One of our more impressive signings of recent times for me.
 
Yeah, I really like Ugarte. He's a keeper. We need to put another great midfielder beside him and he'd look even better.
 
Still not fully convinced by his qualities on the ball. I don’t know the stats for the game, but he seemed to have minimal impact on the ball. How many completed passes? Touches?

Guessing his stats were heavily impacted by the red card as we basically setup for 50 minutes to just hold the fort.
 
Bruno was 51 of 66 but he was dropping really deep to get on the ball.
Zirkzee was 12 of 18

I was surprised how low the number was but watching the game he wasn't getting on the ball at all especially after the red card.
 
I think in that second half I think it was more about keeping your shape and discipline which he did excellently. He also harried the man on the ball which is what we needed at the time.
 
I’m wary of repeating the same criticism… Ugarte is completely fine with the physical stuff, but I thought United moved the ball quicker after he was replaced, Casemiro’s better ability on the ball made a difference.
 
Ugarte passing is better than you make out. He brings others into play. The issue when Casemiro was on the pitch was that Bruno had to sit so deep he was almost playing as a CB. I think the increase in the game was maybe due to phase in the game rather than the substitution. Ugarte plays in midfield like a 26-27 year old when he is only 23.
 
For me, Ugarte’s passing is not good enough for him to be considered a permanent fixture in the team. He hasn’t the quickness of thought to see a passing opportunity probably due to his shortcomings causing him to dwell on the ball. He’ll obviously have good moments but not consistently. Two of his better performances have been against Arsenal and Liverpool where it’s been backs against the wall. In the short term, in this current team, he’ll be fine, but as Amorim/United hopefully sign the right players his playing time will be reduced.
 
I don't think his passing is that bad actually.

But is that his role anyway, he should be protecting/helping the back 3 and giving the ball to more creative players?
 
He's got a decent enough short passing game but he hasn't got much range to his passing meaning you don't really want him taking the ball off the defence as he's a sideways passer rather than a forward passer.

He'll be fine for a few more years as we hopefully look to climb back up the table but I doubt he'd be a starter for a side that can really challenge for a title. That said that's the difference between him at £45m and say Rice at over £100m.

Utd have got to find a settled midfield partnership that works this summer they need someone alongside Ugarte who can be more of a playmaker so that Bruno isn't going to get the ball so deep.

I disagree a little on this. I don’t think his passing is that bad actually, he may not be as expansive with his passing but there have been on occasion this season where he has pinged some lovely passes about.

He is primarily a ball winner which he does very well and I think we feel it when he’s not in there harrying the opposition. He does keep it simple on occasion but I think his attributes dovetail quite nicely with Bruno and sure we will be looking to bring in someone else in that midfield who is more of a playmaker.

Do you not think we will end up with Ugarte and Mainoo?

Wouldn't think it's a position in the starting 11 we will be too focused on this summer.

I'm not sure on Mainoo in midfield in a 2 if I'm honest think he looks like a guy who needs to be in a 3 or played slightly further forward.

Not giving up on him but I think next season we will need 2 more centre mid options.

In this system I think Mainoo might be used as one of the number 10's.

Centre mid is a huge priority for me this summer as Casemiro/Eriksen just aren't options we can even consider next season so we need to find 2 new guys who are good enough to start for us regularly going forward.
 
I think the club will sell Mainoo, and probably garnacho.

That's the sounds I'm getting from things like, we need to sell to improve
 
Don't we also have to comply with homegrown rules though?

Can see them letting Garnacho go as were willing to in January. But can't see Mainoo going.

Hopefully the sale of Rashford and Sancho and Greenwood moving to PSG are enough to gaurd against either going.
 
I can't see them trying to sell either of them but if there's interest and good offers for them they'd have to be considered as with no european football looking likely next season there's going to be a big drop in revenue for next season.

Mainoo is the one I think they'd prefer to keep hold of been a tough second season for him.

If they don’t add a CM in the summer then they are in big big trouble again. That midfield is not good enough and will light on numbers too.

And who are these midfield options going to pass to, to score? You are both missing the whole point of football. Goals. It's very simple, and I've been saying it for a long time. The basics of football are being ignored and by so called good coaches.

Fernandes in his proper position will find a good striker 50% of the time he tries to. It's no coincedence all teams that do well in their leagues have a great goal scorer. It's not rocket science.

Even a ball playing CCB is probably of more use to us than a centre-mid right now. If we add a stiker then that priority probably changes to wing-backs.

ST, GK, WB.

Getting goals and eliminating stupid errors at the back are the priority.
 
It isn't a case of sign a midfielder and every thing is fixed but he's got to improve his options in midfield in the summer.

Casemiro and Eriksen are no longer anywhere near the standard required physically for this league and have got to be replaced. It's a shame Collyer got another injury (not a good sign btw) as I'd like to see him get some games.

Replacing them won't solve our issues at right wing back or in the front 3 positions.

All across the squad the quality of players has got to improve and Utd need to start finding goals from all over the pitch.

Haha do any United fans right now? What positives can you see? I mean most United fans can’t so why would I? My team are all but confirmed to be relegated.

Your midfield is not good enough. It isn’t good enough to contend to get top 4 let alone get you guys back to where you want to be. And it hasn’t been for a long long time now.

Well, the most popular online forum is RedCafe and they don't have much positive to say about the club right now, so I will have to give you that. However, most of those people are doom mongers and it's the reaason I stopped conversing with them. We all know the club is in a bit of a state right now, but constantly whining about it helps nobody and it's not what I want to be reading.

We can be positive though if we want to. The new coach is in place for next season and with some good signings who knows? It only takes 2-3 players to make a real difference even at the top level. If you have a goal scorer and someone to supply him [Bruno] then things can get a lot easier very quickly. If we then add to that in the same window there's no reason we can't change our fortunes.

It would just be nice to read something positive from you now and then.

Dude… I’m not a United fan so what I’m saying is not negative and it isn’t positive either. I’m just giving my opinion on United whether that’s seen as good or bad. And this particular conversation was about your midfield and I don’t think it’s very good.

If you want some “positives” I think you have a good young manager in place. I think Yoro is going to be a good player and Chido Obi is going to be a good player. But all I’m doing is giving my opinion on United.
 
To be fair it's hard to be positive about Utd at the moment.

Most of us are just "hoping" it's going to get better there's no real evidence to say for sure that it will.

It's not that hard to be positive at all. You're all still caught up in this season and blaming Amorim for everything, when it's next year your focus should really be on. ETH ended any hope in this season very early.

It is extremely easy to be negative though, and just have a go for the sake of it. I could show up on Southampton's forum every now and then and tell their following they are shit and will be relegated. I don't think I'd be too popular though.

Think I've just seen to many messiah's who were going to fix it to instantly fall for the latest one. I'm now at the point where I want to see the results before I start believing the hype.

Lets not forget this time 2 years ago we probably thought ETH was well on his way to fixing the mess. Think it's almost 2 years to the day since we beat Barcelona over 2 legs to knock them out of Europa League.

I like Amorim he talks a good game but until we see him with a squad of players more suited to his style you can't really judge him.

I suspect on any Southampton forum most of them started the season expecting to be relegated I don't think any Utd fans started the season expecting to be in the bottom half at the start of March.

It does apply to Ugarte in a way. I’m fairly positive about him but need to see him keep it going into next season as well as the rest of this one.
