Manuel Ugarte | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

Looking forward to see Ugarte in action against Palace.

And also Hojlund instead of Zirkzee

Unconvincing performance. He was unable to stamp any authority in and out of possession.

I think it’s going to take a bit of time to get tuned in to the faster nature of the English game. He has come from Portugal and France where the game is a little less frantic. I think once he adjusts he’ll be just fine.

He might not be fully fit because I thought he looked really slow? You guys want to hope that is a match fitness thing rather than that he just lacks any kind of pace.

My slight worry with Ugarte is that he is a similar profile to Lucas Torreira and he didn’t quite cut it at Arsenal. I would say he’s a little more physical than Torreira but probably have the same sort of limitations on the ball wise.

Bit worried about how little we've seen of him since he's arrive.

I know ETH did warn about this hopefully we get to see more of him after the international break.

Rumours about the player being unhappy already; even talks of an early exit.

As feared by me the comments made by ETH about it taking months to intergrate him were nothing more than an excuse to leave him out.

The coach knows how to bring players confidence right down, that's for sure.

Possibly. I hope they aren't true to be honest. The last thing we need is more problems.

It just seems a bit off between Ugarte and ETH.

I can’t imagine that Ugarte is unhappy but suppose you never know!

I think easing in a player is not totally unheard of and I guess the good form of Eriksen has also perhaps muddied the waters selection wise.

I think ultimately he will be first choice with Mainoo but there are plenty of games to go around.

He had no pre season so he was eased in through his first few weeks at the club in a new league.

Hardly shocking stuff happens all the time

Well the rumours are supposedly from Ugarte himself. He's the one saying he's frustrated, so he clearly feels he's ready to play.

Just feels like a rumour that’s got no legs whatsoever.

Yeah thought he was very good last night. He put himself about and generally played well. Think he just needs a run of games now in the league to fully get him up to speed.

I must watch different games, I sat there thnking another waste of money

The bloke won the ball back that started our move on the goal and saved a certain goal with a recovery tackle.

Got stuck into them as well which was nice to see

You just can’t win with some people.

But isn't that his job? it's not like we were looking at something was my point.

So he does his job well and gets a bit of praise. What’s wrong with that?

No one on here has said this guy is the new Roy Keane off the back of that just that he had a good game.

I suppose, fair do's

just a bit odd to me that a player gets praise for doing his job. That should be for extraordinary performances. I mean he gave the ball a few times yesterday, was very late on a couple of challenges. Just don't think it was anything special. I wasn't sat there thinking we found a gem. But I guess it's difficult to perform in this team.

So I take back my harshness

Good performance. He made lots of tackles, interceptions and his passing was better.

I’d say he’s a box to box midfielder rather than a holding one based on what I’ve seen so far.

Yep I think he's slowly getting up to speed hopefully we'll see him start in the league soon.

His quality on the ball is a concern and could be an issue going forward. Not convinced he will be a first team regular in the future but obviously hope he will prove me wrong.

I think he will be fine still getting up to the speed of the league can take players 6-12 months to adapt.

There’s enough positives to be hopeful that he’ll be a good player for us.

It’s not an easy league to slot straight in for a lot players. Some take time and Ugarte will probably fall into that section. I thought he was fine today and showed he can ping a pass.

Not ripped up trees so far but think he’ll be just fine.

Might help him with his former manager coming in as he will know the system already.

I suspect the new manager will help him out there. He knows the player and got the best out of him at Sporting. Use him in a way that gets the best out of him… Use him to be busy and win the ball but play it simply to those who can play a bit more.
