Manchester City Discussion 2023/24

I think we need a city win, they're going to win the league regardless. I know top 4 for us seems very unlikely at the moment, but we need top 4 teams to drop points more than we do city

I don’t want City doing 4 in a row.

Arsenal without Saka and Martinelli on the bench, two huge injuries for Arsenal.

Arsenal win!

City are not looking the same team as last year. They are obviously missing De Bruyne but they aren’t quite as relentlessly good.

Watched it on that game mode channel, not sure if it was better or not, or even that different, crashed towards the end though that might have been Micah Richards throwing down his console ....

Shit match though, some might say it was a respect thing, nah it was just poor.

All three matches they've lost are the three Rodri missed on his ban

Done well to lose 3 games when he's only served 2 games of his ban.

His ban didn't count in the league cup match still has 1 game to serve on the ban and he's back for the derby... just our luck!

you need to check your facts, 3 match ban, including domestic cup

Fairly sure they changed the rules 2 seasons ago so that cards only count for the competition you got them in from now on.

He’s still got one more game to miss. They just didn’t play him in the cup.

But looking online different places say different things so maybe the rules been changed back. It was changed to stop people missing the FA Cup final due to Prem cards.

Say that he'll miss the Brighton game.

not was the BBC news said this morning. And all the press releases I've read

Manager Pep Guardiola has spoken to the media before Manchester City's Carabao Cup third-round tie at Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Here are the main lines from his news conference:

  • Guardiola confirmed midfielder Kalvin Phillips will make only his fifth start for the club in the absence of the suspended Rodri: "Rodri will be missed and his consistency is really important. He will help us breathe." Phillips has struggled for regular minutes since his £45m move from Leeds United last year, and two of his previous starts came at the end of last season after City had already won the Premier League.

My mistake I thought they'd changed the rules around serving bans in cup competitions.

If thought if you got sent off in the league now the ban only counted towards league games and if you get sent off in the cup it only counts for cup games.

Turns out yellow cards in cup games don't count towards your league total anymore, that was the change. You can get 2 yellows in the cup before a ban that only applies to the cup with totals wiped at the quarter final stage. .

Red Cards regardless of competition are served immediately so if you are sent off in the cup you will miss league games and vice versa.

A real courageous underdog story.

They’ve had to cheat and cheat their way to this position but finally they are making some good money.

I wonder who will be play Pep in the movie.

How much of that commercial revenue comes from legit deals that they could attract on the open market?

I guess the annoying thing is they’ve got all the money but they’ve actually gone about spending it with a plan and it’s working.

When you look into it City are reporting a higher income from sponsorship deals than Utd, approx 40m higher than us.

If that doesn’t set alarm bells ringing for FFP then there’s no hope.

They are serial winners and in the CL, and I think some of our advertising drops when we are not in the CL.

40m doesn't seem too drastic. I think it depends on who the sponsors are, rather than the price. If it's loads of companies based or owned by UAE

Winning doesn't make much difference to the commercials year one year it makes a huge difference in TV/Prize money. City smashed us on this metric 200m vs 300m this is where success pays off. Obviously if you are successful then the deals you can attract will over time become more lucrative but what brands really care about is how many people are looking at your product so where is the exposure.

Our sponsorship deal with Adidas does reduce if we aren't in the CL for 2 consecutive seasons (hasn't happened yet) although that might have been negotiated out of the new deal as Utd proved through shirt sales that being in the Europa didn't see a decline in the number of shirts sold.

A lot of City's sponsorship deals have ties to UAE there's Etihad, Etisalat, Emirates Palace and Abu Dhabi tourism who are 4 of their 10 biggest sponsors.

my point is exactly this, winning, brings exposure which in turns ups your negotiating

Does winning bring exposure?

I suspect the audience figures for Man Utd in 6th dwarf Man City in 1st in every single game, they also have more eyes in the stadium and a lot more media coverage.

How often do City make the back pages or are first up on the news channels/websites?

Winning will raise their ability to negotiate higher contracts but topping a club like Utd to me is impossible. The fact 4 of their 10 biggest sponsors come from UAE where the clubs owners are the ruling family tells you everything you need to know. The numbers are not real and UEFA/Premier League need to be calling them out on it as they're inflating commercial revenues to help their FFP.

You're just repeating what I said.

If all the deals are from the UAE then eyebrows should be raised.

Of course winning and being in the CL increases negotiation with sponsors. Silly to suggest it doesn't

As I said 4 of their 10 biggest deals are linked to UAE. From memory on the list in was number 1, 3, 6 and 7 on the list when ranked in terms of value. Number 2 was the kit deal they have with Puma.

The figures we are looking at will be deals that were locked in before they won the champions league as they cover up to June 2023. So any new deals since they won the champions league will be seen in the 2023-24 figures.

Sponsors are not attracted by success they are attracted by the size of your audience Utd's attraction to sponsors has not diminished because we are no longer successful.

Depends how one achieves their success. Sure even some City fans know they are corrupt to the core and a good majority of football fans will not enjoy what they have done. So maybe diehard City fans will watch them religiously but I think the neutral will still favour watching other teams.

United are still light years ahead of City in terms of status and how big of a club we still are.

Of course they are not on the same level as Man Utd as far fan base goes.

But we are talking advertising here, if you don't think the fact they play CL and win the league every year increases their sponsor revenue then that is daft. Why don't Brighton have the same sponsorship revenue as the top teams?

City will be playing huge teams in europe, who's fan base will see them.

I'm not quite sure where you and JSP are coming from. All I said was 40m doesn't seem that much different considering the teams on field fortunes at the moment. And i did say, in my first post, if all the deals from the UAE then that is supsect.

10% or £40m higher than one of the big 3 clubs in world football is highly suspicious.

Their success has increased their sponsorship value but there is no way they can top Utd's without cheating and that is the point I was making.

City are probably on par with Everton in terms of a world wide fan base/audience in the "real" world they wouldn't be able to get sponsorship deals anywhere near Utd even with their on field success.

They are either breaking the rules or certainly bending them beyond the spirit of the rules to make sure they can comply with FFP.

They'll just threaten to turn off the gas supply and a call will come down to the premier league to give them the points back and forget about it.

Probably be given some extra points for their co-operation.
