Luke Shaw | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

It's all in jest.

Him being back would be a massive bonus as he makes the side so much better the poor guy just can't stay fit.

Think those who think Shaw will fit seamlessly into Amorim’s 3-4-3 system are in for a shock.
It’s easy to look good in an ultra defensive system against San Marino’s ladies 2nd team, a whole new ball game in a progressive set-up against City, Liverpool, Arsenal et al in the PL

His football intelligence and skill has never been in question for me. It's just his body that is the problem.

He's the most obvious choice for left wing-back.

I think he might struggle with the wing back role but he'll give us extra cover for the left sided centre back position which he's played a few times under Ole and did well.

That centre back roll probably puts a lot less pressure on his body as well.

Shaw won’t stand a cat in hells of playing in an Amorim set up, he can’t get back into position after he’s strayed forward and won’t be able to keep fit anyway going on recent events.

Rather try Godwill Kukonki(16) at LWB, strong enough for the CB duties when needed, and good pace and enough ability on the ball to get forward and whip dangerous crosses in

When Shaw is fit he’s one of the very best in the world. Amorim will love what he can bring but his biggest challenge is to stay fit!

I think some people have forgotten the threat Shaw can have down the left, whether it is running at people or picking people out with his fanatstic left-foot. He used to be a set piece taker for us, and probably still would be if fit. He's good at picking out low crosses across the box and getting into the box himself which is what Amorim encourages his players to try and do first and foremost. The left sided wing back will be tasked with attempting to go wide if the centre is too congested, and he can do that too.

100% he can play wing back easily.

I reckon if he plays he'll be used in the back 3 rather than as a wing back.

Bar his brief return he's basically been out for a year.

A hospital research facility to assess why he gets injured so much? They pay well I reckon.

Not sure it needs much research.

Some idiot snapped his leg in two and he's never fully recovered from it.

Most of his injuries probably go back to that in some way because he'll have had to compensate for it which puts strain in other areas which means he eventually breaks down.

So working on basic numbers here he's reported to be on £200k a week lets assume he takes the reported 20% cut when the club aren't in Europe so currently he's on £160k a week or £8m a year.

If they're taking him on loan for half the season do we think they're paying him the £4m he would earn at Utd? Probably not but they should be able to cough up a decent chunk of that money.

From a PSR view Antony costs Utd £16m a season with his transfer fee so half a season is £8m. Normally you'd try to get a loan fee to cover the PSR but we can probably assume that isn't happening here.

So Antony for half a season costs Utd £12m in terms of PSR if they've covered even £6m of that with this loan they've done very well.
If we knew this, why did we give him another contract ?
We soon got shot of Hargreaves and Smith for similar reasons, so other than keeping the physio company, what does Shaw bring to the club?
Collect the insurance money, pay him off and get rid!

Collect the insurance money, pay him off and get rid!

Have to ask Murtough that as he was the man in charge of the football operations when he signed his last deal. Woodward starting him on £100k a week at 18 meant his wages were always going to be very high by the time he was in his late 20's.

He signed his last contract in 2023 that season he played most of the games so they probably thought the injuries were behind him but that hasn't been the case. Last season he played 12 league games this season he's played 2 so far.

It took the club 2 years to "get rid" of Hargreaves and the only managed to get rid of him because his contract expired. It'll be the same situation with Shaw.

As for insurance that would only pay out if his injury was career ending. Clubs often have insurance that covers some of the players salary while injured having him on that policy must whack the premium up a fair bit.

Paying him off achieves nothing you can pay him £25m now in 1 lump sum to go or keep paying him £800k a month for the next 30 months. It makes no sense unless Shaw was willing to take mutual termination for a lesser sum at the end of the season (my guess is he wont).

Luke has seen a new left back incoming and he’s like not on my watch Patrick!

In before new 'setback' announced.

Would be great to have him back though, we miss his creativity down the left a lot.

Maybe they’ve finally re-opened the canteen after refurb works.

While not confirmed it does have a sense of inevitability about it. He gets back into training, gets injured, rinse and repeat.

Some bodies just aren’t cut out for the constant top level demands of football. And this is the case for Shaw.

I think Rashford really missed him, they had a great partnership and he was never quite the same without Shaw behind him.

Sounds like the reports of 4 weeks were wide of the mark. He’ll miss the Leicester game but back in training next week.
