Luke Shaw | Match Discussion Thread 2023/24

Hamstring injury probably won't see him until the new year.

He doesn't get half as much grief about his injuries as Varane does.

World Class assist the way he bent it perfectly off the post to find Anthony at the back post.

You just can't teach that.

Such a pivotal player to this side, we seriously miss him when he’s not playing.
It's his ability to switch defence into attack. The threat he poses on set plays and deliveries from the left are usually very dangerous. He seems mostly confident on the ball too, one of few in our team - at least right now. So yes, pivotal.

He’s a top player, there’s no doubting his ability, but his injury record is a concern. His injury record is the only reason why I think United should sign a new left back in the summer.

Ten Hag on Luke Shaw, who was taken off at half-time: "Precaution. He had some complaints and we can't take any risks with him because he's had any injuries in the past. We'll have to see how it goes in the next few days. It's not an advantage to lose him, everyone knows my philosophy to have left-footers at left centre-back and left-back. We have to make compromises and it is not to our advantage."

Would you sell Shaw?

We do still have Malacia to come back I’m not sure we need 3.

Probably not because of the quality he does possess. He’s still only 28. When does his contract expire?

What’s the story with Malacia?

He signed a new deal last season until 2027.

Not to sure the club aren‘t saying to much on injuries these days, he returned to light training a few weeks ago but there doesn’t seem to be much talk of a return. He’s become a bit of a forgotten man.

Hopefully he’s back soon and makes a full recovery.

Shaw is crucial to our style of play. It isn’t a coincidence our form changed with his and Casemiros return.

Ten Hag: “Yes, so he is doubtful for the weekend but we are positive he can make it,” Ten Hag told reporters when asked about Shaw’s condition.

“So, he fell out [of the game], it was a precaution [to substitute him] and I think it was the right decision, especially when you, afterwards, win the game.

“But we are working to Sunday.”

Shaw has been a bit of a worry recently - in fact this season. In and out of the team with daft knocks etc. Probably down to Justin Cider's voodoo doll.

What’s the average availability? What is Martinez at?

If you’re looking at injury prone then you need to look at muscle related injuries really so exclude the broken leg. That’s a freak accident and absolutely nothing to do with being injury prone. The fact the guy came back from that was brilliant enough.

He’s been consistently good for United over the past 4 seasons. You’re the only person I know that criticises him. If he was northern you’d love him.

For someone who bangs on about understanding football and tactics it’s truly amazing you don’t understand what he brings to us offensively.

Well you need to get out more then. Nonsense, one of my first heroes at United was Gordon Hill, I was devastated when Dave Sexton(bloody Cockney!) sold him on, loved Teddy Sheringham, Paul Ince until his dalliance with Liverpool, could go on .....

Said numerous times(on this forum)when he's fit and in-form he has few equals carrying the ball from box to box, my issue with him has always been he's shit defensively(he must be a friggin nightmare for the LCB to play alongside because he never commits, never), and his end product in the final-third is shocking.

Not a bad team from the Smoke, the only reason I've put Shaw in is because I can't think of another lad from down your end that played LB

Stepney
Parker Ferdinand McGrath Shaw
Beckham Wilkins Ince
Cunningham Sheringham Hill

Sealey
AWB
Smalling
Wallace
Richardson
Angel Gomes

Harry Amass in a couple of years maybe ....

Injuries are an on going issue for him but I don't think this season has been helped by Malacia also being out for the whole season.

When he's returned he's straight back in the side playing 90 minutes every game they haven't been able to ease him back in.

Huh, Dalot has started half a dozen or more games at left-back, and until January we also had Reguilón.

So it's not as though we/EtH has been flogging him. He's just injury-prone because he's not disciplined enough to stay fit.

He's having a dubious season for sure. If you look at your own chart though you will see the previous three seasons have been between good and very good for him. I think that is enough to cement a place in our sqaud. He's entering his best years or is in them, so I am firmly confident that keeping him is the best option.
