Luke Shaw | Match Discussion Thread 2023/24

Very solid player feels like his fitness issues are behind him.

Still has a few games a season where he’s a disaster and probably relies on the recovery speed more than he should have to but there’s not many around who are much better than he is.

He does not sense or react to the danger quick enough, which we have known for years.

Even against Wolves there was acres of space in behind him. Not sure if that's Shaw being out of position or where ETH wants him, but it's causing us a lot of problems.

Well doesn’t this season go from bad to worse!

I presume this means Dalot at left back and Fernandez loan move will be quashed. No real cover at full back with Malacia already out and Williams just been sent on loan.

Is the season over yet? I want to get off!

Maybe some good will come of it, not exactly setting the world on fire

I’m not sure how taking out one of our best players could ever be conceived as a positive - despite the whole team being poor in the first two games including Shaw.

Dalot at LB doesn’t exactly scream palatable!

Jesus, we've had two fecking games! Get a grip.
Yeah soz, forgot prem league was only 36 games

Why can't you just admit we've been crap? If it was the end of the season would you be saying, oh, it's only the last two games?

Often, and you can take England women's team as a good example, a forced change can improve things. In England's case it was their best player.

Maybe it will even force the club into the market

I mean if Malacia wasn't also injured it wouldn't be as big a problem.

I do wonder if this means Fernandez loan move gets pulled which is harsh because if both the senior guys are fit again in a month he's then stuck with no first team football until January.

Yeah guess this will mean Fernandez will be kept on. It would be harsh for him if in a months time he’s back down the pecking order like you say but then again if he comes in and takes his chance, he could push himself ahead of Malacia.

Can you not go on loan after the window?

Maybe do a delayed loan deal.

Maybe he'll come in and nail it for the season

Not too up on the loan rules but I don’t believe you can be loaned out after the window has closed. I remember in times gone by the Championship loan window was open for a little longer after the window closed.

Beyond that I think it’s just emergencies loans for goalkeepers as an example that can happen out of the window.

Yeah loans are now either half season or full season so once the window shuts players can't sign anyone else on loan.

You can apply for emergency loans but these only really happen with goalkeepers.

The original return date that was suggested was he wouldn't be back until after this international break but the club aren't really giving updates on injured players any more so it's hard to tell.

If he was coming back soon I suspect the club would have posted some training stuff on social media like they did with Amad and Malacia recently.

Yeah suspect he is perhaps a few weeks away. We really do need him back because we miss him both defensively and offensively.

He gets some stick from a few people but he’s class for me and we really miss him when he’s not there.

I am sure I read recently he will be back in squad after internationals. I am just trying to find the source

Shaw (and Martinez’s) ability to progress the ball has been sorely missed. United have been without three starters in defence for a quarter of the season, which has largely been ignored by many. You’d think Shaw will play at left centre back when he returns.

I think to start with Shaw has to go in at left back. Dalot and Lindelof in that position offer very little going forward and defensively it's difficult for them.

Think until Martinez is back he'll use Lindelof or Evans as the left centre back.

When Malacia is back he might consider playing Shaw at centre back again.

They have shown Malacia training on his own recently on social media which suggests he's not far away.

Given how long he's been out I reckon they'll try and get him an U21 game or two in.

Not sure if the club have arranged any behind closed doors friendly matches during the international break, there's probably quite a few players who could do with a decent run out in the break.

I'm not overly excited about Shaw, he won't make that much difference

15 or 16 assists in about 180 games

Its not his assist that make the difference. His overlapping on the left side opens up more space. Him being there improves our attacking play. He also is good at picking a pass which can lead to someone finding a pass.

He's been a massive loss. One of the best players and most important players we have.

I think his return will coincide with Rashfords return to form.

Aren't all our players pretty crap for assists because our attackers are useless at finishing chances? Further evidence that the assist stat is the most useless stat in all of football.

Shaw will make a big difference to this side he's a much better defender than Dalot and going forward he gives us width on the left side because he doesn't want to come inside all the time so he'll overlap the wide player.

He isn't perfect but he's a lot better than the lads who are currently playing.
