To be honest, we don't need stats to know that the team has played a lot of unnecessary passing between De Gea, defenders, Carrick and then resort to longer balls once pressed.

There's a difference between long balls and hoofing it to no one though isn't there? Stats don't tell the whole story. A lot of the long balls have been necessary (or at least there's an aim of where the pass is going), a lot have been unnecessary though. A lot of the unnecessary "hoofing" has been when we've played a back 3 where we have struggled to pass it out from the back due to pressing or a lack of passing options in midfield. I don't believe there's an instruction to play long balls, we're just struggling to do what we really want to do.

Van Gaal: "You have to look at the data and then you will see that we did play long balls, but long balls wide, rather than to the striker. A ball to the forward striker is mainly called long ball play. We are playing ball possession play."

Big Sam's comment was in jest. Long balls or short it's a bore-fest.
