Lisandro Martinez | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

I thought he was very fortunate to only get a yellow. I don't know what the matter is with him this season.

Thought he had a good game and don't think was anywhere near a red.

Think if the ref gave the red then VAR stick with it.

Bit like the Bruno one a few weeks ago the slip probably saved him a bit and there wasn’t much force behind it.

I dunno they seem pretty clear that for it to go from reckless (yellow) to dangerous (red) then the force of the tackle has to be considered to be endangering an opponent.

You can catch someone high but it's the force of the tackle that really seems to matter it was more of a trip that a tackle.

It was never going to injure Palmer so they seem to be giving a yellow card for those now.

Never a red, naughty maybe but never nasty, there’s an art to defending you’ve got to get away with as much as you can every time you go into a tackle, or you will injure yourself

No doubt the ban tackling lobby will disagree, but who cares ....

Withdrawn from Argentina squad due to injury

Injury prone, as I told you.

Three injuries this season already. August, September, and now November.

Inacio/Branthwaite in summer?
Branthwaite for me, I like the player a lot. It's Amorim's game now though and I back his choices whoever they are.

We can't keep going with these injury prone players though. The last two years have been hell. I don't know about you, but I've had my fill.

Martinez is always in some car crash challenge every game, I don't know what he expects to happen with his tiny frame. He's a great defender with absolutely no common sense.

Now being reported as a lower back injury rather than a hip injury.

Hopefully it's not to serious.

Surely this rules Branthwaite out? I love him and think we should sign him and have said that he's the best young defender I've seen but he's certainly shown himself to be injury prone this season.

I just don't see us splashing out on another big money centre back this summer.

I think they'll try and find a couple of cheap squad players to replace Evans, Maguire and Lindelof.

Wouldn't surprise me if we did for someone like Branthwaite. Him and Yoro could be it for a decade.

Just don't see where the money comes from. In Martinez/De Ligt and Yoro he's got 3 top centre backs in their prime all on good money so think he'll be looking to added a bit of cover to replace the out going squad players.

Midfield needs urgent attention in the summer with Eriksen and Casemiro expected to leave that only really leaves Mainoo and Ugarte.

Pretty sure one of his recent injuries was due to being rushed back too quickly. I'm hoping when he comes back fully fit he manages to get the rest of the season under his belt, then we can think about him as a transfer. If injuries keep happening though, we should stay clear.

I agree 100% about his potential.

He's also perfect for one of the wide CB roles in an Amorim system.

Yoro is in his prime is he?

Everyday is a learning day

Nothing else to add?

The point was he’s got 3 players who are at a good age that he can build with. I don’t think the club needs to spend another 70m on 1 centre back unless 1 of those 3 is being sold.

I'd say he's perfect for the LCB position he's comfortable at centre back and full back so that position should suit him.

Not if you knew what Amirin expects from his LCB you wouldn't, and he's not got enough pace to play at FB

Martinez is very similar to Inacio who was his LCB at Sporting, so I would echo what jsp said about Martinez being pretty perfect for what Amorim wants.

Amorim likes distinguished passers back there and who are able to pick passes through midfield, again something Martinez is accomplished at.

I don’t know enough about the Amorim system but Martinez would be someone I’d expect to adapt to most styles.

No reason he couldn’t be the spare man in the centre

Huh, similar, Inacio is 6’2” and has the build of a CB for starters ....

It’s a simple game and he doesn’t over-complicate it, he feels to make his system work, and he’s had enough success with it to suggest it will, is having a LCB who can get forward like Roberto Carlos/Patrice Evra in their pomp and a left-footed wide RW(looks like he’s already got that in Amad). The other wide positions he wants players that play on their natural side.

I didn’t mention anything about height, so I’m fully aware of that disparity but I was just comparing them in the context of being able to pass the ball through the midfield. This is a key component of an Amorim style CB.

As is being slightly taller than Ronnie Corbett

We haven’t really seen much evidence of it yet but Martinez’s passing from the back is far superior to Inacio and he is a lot braver, read stupider

Looks rusty.

I don’t think we’ve seen him back at his best since the injury.

Think his passing from the back will be key once he works the passing angles out. He’s the one who can get it into the forwards on the floor from deep.
