Kobbie Mainoo | Match Discussion Thread 2023/24

An 18 year old can of course struggle with fitness and the demands of high level competition. It’s far different from training and playing in the youth teams.

Your body is always developing as a teenager and getting used to the added rigours of strength and conditioning.

I think it’s a myth that teenagers can just run for days and not get tired. The EPL is physically demanding for players who have years of experience.

If you think an 18 year old is in peak physical condition to compete against other elite athletes, you really don't understand fitness. If this was the case every 4 years in the olympics all the winners would be teenagers.

He's up against lads who are 22/23 who will be fully developed physically and can still match his speed but they're stronger and probably have better endurance levels to last 90 minutes. This isn't an 18 year old lad playing against a load of p*ss heads from the dog and duck on a sunday morning it's full time pro's up against each other at 18 you are still building up the physical side of your game to last for 90 minutes.

It was a poor pass and Chelsea capitalised on it they got a 2 vs 1 out wide on a break played it well and a deflection fell their way in the box.

He is going to make mistakes it's part of the process and no one is saying it's the reason we lost the tactics don't help him as he has a hell of a lot to do.

nah, he doesnt appear to be struggling with fitness, its lack of tactics and team mates he's struggling with.

Jeez, Bruno misplaced nearly evey ball last night

He runs out of gas late in games it's not a surprise as he gets through a lot of work and he's still building up his fitness.

He's being asked to play a very demanding style with this high press low block chaos tactic.

Not going to play the whatabout game with Bruno ,it's a waste of time as we're not talking about Bruno. Go to his thread to discuss him.

It was a terrible pass that allowed Chelsea a counter attack which they scored from. He almost did it again late in the game played a very dangerous square ball that Palmer cut out.

of course it's relevant, you said Mainoo made a bad pass because he's 18 and tired.

I'm saying most of the 22+ on the pitch last night made terrible passes and decisions

The problem with him is not his age and games. It's the whole team. So it must be the manager.

Well I didn't say that.

I said he made a bad pass that was punished and he's also looking a bit tired especially later on in games because he's a kid still finding his feet in the men's game. It's nothing new I've said it from the start this kid needs to be looked after and not flogged to death as he's a real star.

I agree the style is asking any midfielder to perform an impossible task, as for the manager I don't really see what the alternative is in terms of tactics. The signings haven't worked out and that will probably be what costs him his job but at least the other people involved in making those decisions will be going with him this time.

Mainoo shouldn't be blamed for much considering he has had so little time to adjust to anything. He's doing a great job on the whole for his age and experience. I couldn't be happier with him.

Can't wait till next season when we get the he's not as good as I thought he'd be, he doesn't score/assist enough

He shouldn’t be playing as much as he is, at his age he should be brought on gradually but injuries and older players under performing are forcing the issue, look how Foden was coached and where he is now.

True, and true. Think Mainoo has a much higher ceiling of the two though.

The technique was incredible on the hit, what a moment for the young man.

Great goal today and he did some good things but I do think there is a risk that United are going to over use him and aren’t going to protect him as a young player should be.

One of his better performances in his fledgling career. He showed real class at times, perhaps unfortunate not to have an assist or two to his name.

he played some lovely through balls showing has vision to go with the composure under pressure.

I think he's one of the best young footballers I have seen, and that's not red tinted glasses, the boy is special

Just a brilliant player in the making. He shouldn’t have to be carrying our midfield at his tender age but he’s doing a damn good job at it.

Another goal for the youngster.

I‘d say a solid 7/10 performance from him to go with it.
