Joshua Zirkzee | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

He does good the ball well but did he create any chances for others or himself?

His goal was a result of a lucky break which is fair enough but he wasn’t near any of the crosses that came in second half.
I suppose he was in the right place to tap in the rebound.

One of his better performances. Some classy touches and passing. Hopefully the performance is a sign that he is now acclimatised to Premier League football.

Still not seeing anything “wow” about him.

Few nice touches and skills but not enough where you see him being a match winner on a consistent basis.

He has a better chance of making it than Hojlund, and it's about time we started to see him get the starts.

A couple of months ago I didn't know where I stood with him. I'm now starting to slightly warm to him but certainly not as an out and out centre forward, which still just leaves us with Rasmus and perhaps one of the youngsters.

Has he done anything in a Utd shirt that’s looked even close to world class? The finish be Fulham on his debut was very nice but since then zilch.

People seem to want to dump all over Hojlund but some of his finishing is genuinely top drawer but his all round game is well short.

Nothing about Zirkzee looks even close to being world class. Especially around the box.

It isn’t like he’s crashing shots off the woodwork or forcing amazing saves when he isn’t scoring.

He does some nice bits on the half way line but around the box where it matters naff all from him. It’s harsh but it’s true and we need to see a lot more if he’s going to last.

His control of the ball, his hold up play and his press resistance are actually looking quite impressive after a pretty ropey start. If he could score goals he'd be a keeper.

He’s obviously got ability on the ball and anyone who watched Bologna probably knew that but he does need to be more clinical in the final third. He has some of the silky play of a Berbatov or Zlatan in his locker but currently none of the goals output.

You could imagine him coming good in a decent team.

I saw most of the first half and caught bits of the second. For the most part he just looks awful. No pace, no ability on the ball, no creativity, no ideas, no physicality.

His control is really bad, but somehow he comes away with the ball often.
It's like a young deer trying to stand for the first time when he receives the ball.
He's nowhere near good enough for a club that wants to compete, but actually we are probably at his level

I only saw the first half.

Does some nice little moves but it rarely hurts the opponent.

Doesn’t do it where it matters in dangerous areas.

He’s a bit of a one off in terms of how he plays but I don’t see him lasting.

Off the ball he’s not good enough to play as a number 10 and as a number 9 he gives you nothing in behind.

He used his strength well at times in midfield to regain/retain possession but the subsequent pass would often be misplaced. Very little input in the final third. Lazy without the ball which is unforgiveable. Marginally offers more than Hojlund.

Some media outlets gave him a 2 against Everton, compared to a 1 for Hoijland.
That's like giving them a rating for actually turning up.

Did ok considering how isolated he was after the red card.

Still just don’t see how he’s going to score or create chances regularly in this league.

Thought in the first half he looked better. He was taking up some decent positions and trying to link things. Still don’t see a player who is going to make any kind of impact though. He’s just got nothing about him.

That's the thing it's great having a guy who can link bits together that you can play direct to but there also has to be the bit where he really hurts the opponent with a killer pass or shots at goal.

He's just a bit of an odd player

You can see why he was rated in the Italian league. That league isn’t what it was, is very slow and is very technical and that kind of suits him. But he doesn’t have any kind of explosion or real threat but I think the Italian league has a lot of those kind of guys?

I think you're crazy if you think Serie A is not competitive. You seem to have the opinion that over there Zirkzee was able to do damage because of this. Have a big rethink.

Good to see him get a goal.

Think tonight maybe showed that in other leagues he could be a much more effective weapon.

Think the speed of the prem might be a little to much for him.

I don't want to do him a disservice

But what a poor goal, Onana would be slaughtered for that. Slap bang in the middle.

Zirkzee is a weird one. Clearly not good enough, always looks clumsy and not fully in control, then he'll pull of a wonderful reverse back heel.

I think he's done well recently, one of our better players.

Yeah not sure what that keeper was up to.

Straight down the middle

If that little flick went in then that would have been some goal. Overall he did okay but just feel he leaves something in the tank at the end of games. He needs to be half a yard quicker to the ball.

He got bullied all the time by their CB, he's no centre forward
Which is the biggest surprise given his size. I'm still unsure whether he has it in his locker to play with the intensity required in our league.

Lots of nice touches and passes in the build up but when it mattered and chances fell to him he couldn’t take them.

Looks like he’s got fitter as the season has gone on.
