Joshua Zirkzee | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

Some people say he's similar to Ibra, I'm not sure they're saying he's as good though 'cause that'd be crazy.

I think he was bought for the fact he's very different to anything we had in our team. It's good to have different options.
 
Not sure about the Ibra thing from a very young age Ibra knew how to use his physique alongside his technique, I think Zirkzee is still working that out a bit.

He's clearly got the upper body strength to bully people like Ibra did but I don't think he really knows how to use it yet.

I also think finishing wise Ibra was lethal inside and outside the box from the limited bits I've seen of Zirkzee with us and via the youtube montages his goals are all in the box he hasn't got that outside the box banger in the locker like Ibra did.

I don't think he's got that nasty streak in him that Ibra had either.

Apparently he had a great game, could of had a trio of assists from what I read.

I wonder if he means that header...
 
I like what I see. His link play and awareness is very good. Another game where he could easily have scored two goals, hopefully that will come. Much better.
 
Yeah second half he took a ball down beautifully on his chest, that’s the first time I’ve seen something from him and instantly thought Zlatan.

His link play was very good.
 
Overall I’d say yes but he took one on the chest on the move that was very Zlatan.
 
I thought he looked poor myself, missed a sitter, might have controlled a ball well, another bounced of his foot 30 yards.

No way we win anything important with him in the 11

Dong him a bit of a disservice there. I thought he linked the play well and overall had a good game. His finishing looks a little erratic so far and he doesn’t look clinical but overall I think there are fairly promising signs.
 
He does need to start adding goals to the good link play.

Thought he was a touch unlucky with the chance second half

It's amazing how people I've posted with for years jump to the oddest conclusions..

I didn't write him off. I commented on what I saw in that game, he was poor, should have scored 2. Should have scored in the game before.
That's what I said, if you disagree with that. Fair enough. That's not writing him off

Although as you used Evra as an example, he was quite successful with Monaco before he arrived, he struggled and the manager managed him into the team.

Go and listen to him on the Gary Neville podcast he's my picture, I love that player. It's a silly reference and bears no resemblance

You said we'd not win anything important with him in the 11. How's that not binning him off?
 
Both can be true :p

He's been poor last two games for me, in front of goal, on that showing we won't win anything with him. You need a striker who is clinical. He doesn't appear to have the natural instinct of a striker.

But we've won plenty of things with people like that as a bench option
 
His finishing has to improve its something Ruud could improve in training and shouldn't be a huge issue to deal with.
 
Don’t think he missed sitters yesterday.

The one first half the cross from Eriksen has no pace on it, lunging for the ball unless you get it perfectly in the corner with a good connection it isn’t beating a keeper as you’ve got to put all the pace on the ball.

Of course you aren’t winning the league with him as your main striker but he looks like a good squad player.

Just not true there’s been plenty of support for Zirkzee. If he’d scored then yeah he might move have turned a good performance into a very good one but he didn’t and at this level you’ll be judged by your goals.

For me Onana held it together in the rough part of the game provided a huge moment that swung the momentum completely. Yeah after that he had nothing to do because the team woke up and did the job it’s meant to do and kept the ball away from his goal.

I don’t want to divert to much away from Onana as this is his thread.

In the last 2 games he’s had 4 good chances and hasn’t taken any of them.

I like him think he gives us something that was missing last season but as an attacker you need to take some of those chances.
 
I too do not want to hijack the thread, but the Zirkzee love leaves me baffled - he is bang average championship level player.

I think he was bought for more than that. Already I can see a shift in patterns in our team when he plays and a much more intelligent style of play. I think the team knew exactly what they were doing when they targeted/bought him. I predict he's going to become so influential in our build up play up front he will become very hard to drop. He doesn't necessarily need to bring a tonne of goals if he can get others firing. I think Rashford already likes playing with him and that alone is a huge benefit. If we can get Rashford firing in 30 a season again, then Zirkzee doesn't need to score.

Long story short - you might not get a lot of goals from him, but you get more goals for your team. This makes sense.

Come on man, you know as well as I do two games is a very short period of time to judge anyone properly.

Same goes for me, I might be ovedoing it with the praise after the two games.

Time will tell.

I certainly think he's earned the right to keep his place in the team and keep at it. Hojlund should have to earn his place back.
 
Think it was pretty well documented that Zirks wasn’t a prolific goal scorer before he came here, more a link up player, I can’t see why his finishing can’t be improved on though isn’t that why Ruud was brought in?

Why do we keep buying forwards that are crap at scoring? We don't need blokes who might be good in a couple of years time.

The opposite for me. The hate for Zirkzee is baffling. He might not be an out and out goal scorer like Haaland but he will score 15-20 goals if he stays injury free. He will bring much more than just goals to the team, he will be a focal point who link play and help the team to function better as a unit. The likes of Rashford, Garnacho and Amad will enjoy playing alongside Zirkzee. He will help improve their goal tallies.
 
I think hate is a strong word, everyone has at least said decent squad player.
 
We totally lost our way when the subs were made and a big part was not having Zirkzee on. He had such an intelligent first half and linked the play so well.

He’s definitely not a number 9 but I think as a number 10 close to Hojlund I think we could have found a gem - shame Bruno is untouchable.

Rashford just isn’t a centre forward.

However, Zirkzee has got to start taking some of his chances.
 
Thought Zhirkzee was poor myself. Didn't understand how he failed to play Rashford and Amad through 2 on 1 for a pretty much nailed on goal.
