Jarrad Branthwaite

Everton need the money and he’s agreed terms which will double what he’s on now at least, he’ll probably put a transfer request in if it drags on.

Why are we ignoring the season before last? He made 36 appearances for PSV.

He's one of the best young prospects at CB I've seen. I think you just go and sign him and barring injuries like Phil Jones you've sorted that CB spot for a decade. I very much believe he's going to the top of the game and if we don't get him now someone else will.

In terms of his games at PSV
1) I watched none of those games
2) I refuse to take anything anyone does in that league seriously having watched a number of players who looked quality in that league absolutely flop here. That isn't just players at Utd the standard of the dutch league is nowhere near the Premier League level.

In terms of my concerns over him from watching him at Everton.
1) can he handle the pressure that comes with that price tag? It's a heavy weight around your neck playing for Utd in the first place a big transfer fee only adds to that.
2) we haven't really seen him play on the right side of the centre back pairing at Everton. That is where he's going to play for Utd.
3) He looks solid in an Everton setup where the defence is well protected at Utd you will be left exposed and expected to control a much bigger area of the pitch. He may have no problems with this but there's not a huge amount of evidence to support it.

I agree you can't be caught napping on top English talent if the scouts are sure on him then I'm all for going for it as it's a position we have to address this summer with Varane's departure.

The fact we seem to be moving early has to be seen as positive as well, while it won't go through until the 1st July because of the league's financial rules it would be great if we land a target in early July.

We did Everton a good deal for James Garner a few seasons back so lets hope there's a good relationship there to get a deal done quickly and sensibly.

A bid of 35m, to me, says we are not going to go anywhere near 70/80m

or we would look a bit daft, and set a tone of still being a walkover for future deals.

Clubs think United are stupid or at least they have in the past, the Maguire fee the club paid was ludicrous and that’s why they think £80 M is about right. SJR won’t be that stupid.

I know United need to change how they negotiate etc but still… £35M opening bid? If that’s true then I mean come on? He’s a young English player at a position of need for United they are going to need to spend a lot more than that. I get they shouldn’t overpay and I get they have to start somewhere but it’s almost a nonsense.

They shouldn’t go near £70M if that’s what Everton want as they need a CM just as badly if not more so.

Seems like a sensible place to start - you never want to open a negotiation with a high offer, it leaves no room for middle ground. I think the club is aiming to end at about £45-50m and £10m in add-ons. I think that would probably bag him.

A stupidly low valuation first off isn’t a good start to healthy negotiations. You want your opening offer to open the door to a negotiation ideally attract a counter rather than a flat rejection.

I suspect the reports that Everton want 70m probably are what they want and they hold a strong hand as he’s under a long contract.

If 70m is the price Everton want Utd I suspect will end up doing a deal around 55-60m fixed with 5-10m in add ons. Full deal around 65m so Utd get them down a bit.

This one feels like it could be the summer saga. Everton wanting more, United unwilling to pay it until they get desperate and overpay. Everton will know just to string this one out. United need to make an offer, set their max fee and if no good then move on quickly.

This is their first deal, that cannot happen. They must just walk away if it gets stupid, you can't go from 35 and end up at 70

Yeah, it's like I said. We're doing it right this time. The opening offer was perfect to end at a price that won't be £70m.

As long as we don't meet their valuation in the end, it signals to other club's that UTD tax is ending.

We've unsettled the player now, he knows we want him. It's in their best interest to find some middle ground.

Surely we can just take Tobido on the cheap!

Currently own both clubs.

I think Branthwaite is a good young player but I think there might be better options out there who wouldn’t cost as much. Guehi would be a really good target I think. He’s not going to be cheap but I think he’d be cheaper than Branthwaite.

70m for him is absolute crazy, he's done nothing to reach that valuation

People thinking £70m for Branthwaite is bad, should check the price of our other target Guehi.

Should give Guehi a wide-berth. Chelsea will have a sizeble sell on and he's not tall enough anyway. or talented enough on the ball.

why Branthwaite over Guehi?

seems like he's talked up in the press without doing anything to me. All hype so far.

Smacks of Chris Smalling to me.

not that I choose Guehi over him, just not sure how you can have such a strong thought on it

I thought your problem was the price? Guehi will cost the same.

An opinion can be formed by watching a player. I have done this, and believe Branthwaite is a special talent.

yeah, i wouldn't pay that for either

Why do you htink he is though, what games stand out that he was so good?

Or are you basing it on press?

Judging on their England performances, Guehi seems more impressive. I didn't think Branthwaite was anything special against united either.

But 70 odd m for either is daft

It's not about specific games, it's about the quality he has. You can see it if you watch him play enough, honestly. He is one of the only players last season to have won 50+ aerial duels [60], make 25+ interceptions [40], Complete 25+ tackles [25], and make 20+ blocks [21]. He's fast, has good recovery pace and defends channels really well. He has the capability to play any position in defence if you ask me, including right-back. The list of reasons to sign him is huge. I fully get the hype, and understand why Everton want so much for him.

To be honest as well, it's not really hype. He's just had a great season. That's a fact.

but isn't he and Martinez left footed?

edit, left footed, but can play right footed, but was deployed on the left

Branthwaite is ambipedal.

Doesn't make a difference though, how many teams do you know that play with two right-footed centre-backs? There will be a lot.

but he plays on the left for his club. I don't know if its much different to play right CB, I was a glory boy striker :p

Well unless we are trying to replace Martinez, the offer for him suggests to me they see no problem with it. It's too much money to use on back-up. He'll go in next to Martinez if we get him. That's the plan.
