Jadon Sancho | Match Discussion thread 2022/23

I thought he was ok when he came on was involved in the build up to the second goal played a nice ball out to Bruno.

Hasn't played in 4 months so bound to be a bit rusty.

Interesting to see him played as a number 10 maybe something we see more of in games as in the centre his quick feet and movement could really open teams up. Maybe ETH feels he just doesn't have that raw speed to play out wide.
I wonder about playing him upfront for those very reasons. He's usually composed in front of goal with a good finish on him, he's not lightning quick, but has more pace than Weghorst, and pressed well at Dortmund and will hold the ball up (and stay fit) better than Martial. He also seems to thrive playing off his teammates, which would suit a more central role.

Not sure he’s physical enough to play up front. In that position you need to be able to handle yourself and playback to goal against 2 centre backs.

I think out wide and number 10 is where he will feature and if Utd can camp in the opponents half I think that helps him. I don’t think he’s a counter attacking player.

He's not a traditional, back to goal, #9, but I think he's got more in his locker than Martial to play in the 'most central attacker' version of being a striker in today's game. Low bar, I concede, but we're going to see more of him through the middle and less out wide.

Well we are not gonna see much of him then.

Is there any current United player you rate?

Re: Sancho, I wonder if Bruno is going to be moved further back to cover for Eriksen, while Fred will slot into the Casemiro role, leaving Sancho to play the 10?

Apart from Heaton, Butland, Henderson, Kovar, Dalot, AWB, Laird, Varane, Maguire, Lindelof, Martinez, Bailly, Jones, Tuanzebe, Mengi, Malacia, Telles, Williams, Alvaro, Casemiro, Eriksen, Fred, Bruno, McTominay, Sabitzer, vd Beek, Mejbri, Galbraith, Iqbal, Mainoo, Shoretire, Hansen-Aaroen, Antony, Garnacho, Amad, Pellistri, Elanga, Rashford, Martial, Weghorst, Greenwood and Hugill, no. not really.

He made quite the impact. Great that he scored.

Could be an important player in the second half of the season.

It's the same as with Rashford, it is good to see a smile on his face again. Tonight should be a real boost of confidence for him, he knows he has our support.

I reckon we'll see Rashford go into the centre now with Sancho on the left from the start.

I have a bit more confidence that Rashford can play that role this season. Good coaching.

Been working closely with Benny McCarthy apparently.

Certainly seems to be adding a few more of the traditional number 9 type goals to his game this season. Tap ins and headers inside the box.

Sancho needs to impress upon his return to the squad because it does feel like this is the last chance he'll get with Ten Hag. If he can't perform he'll be out.

I like Sancho at 10. I like the way he can link play. He has more options and isn’t as restricted as he can be on the wing. He made a massive difference.

He is probably the player in the whole squad who is the most composed on the ball, but I do agree he does need to scrap a lot more than he does to try and get the ball back.

I think he’s one who might be on the “for sale” list this summer.

I seem to remember you called it a couple of weeks ago. It seems to me 10Hag sent him away to make a player of him and it aint worked.
Looking like City got it right and we been mugged up.

Yep I think the boss has been fair with him but the performances just aren’t there and there’s just too many games where you wouldn’t even notice that played.

I won’t say much about today I haven’t seen the game but to me he looks a player who’s only interested when we have the ball when we don’t he switches off.

He reminds me quite a lot of Martial and Januzaj all the ability you could want but there’s something missing that will stop him from being a top player.

A pacy RB who makes that overlapping run would benefit Antony as well. It would be second on my priority list this summer after a CF.

I’m not buying that we said the same stuff about Pogba for years. From memory Dortmund played a 3-4-3 system and his best season on the right he had Hakimi as a wing back outside him and he played a bit more narrow but with Bruno as a 10 we do need our wide players to start wide.

It just hasn’t worked with Sancho and to me it’s because he doesn’t work hard enough off the ball and he gets lost in matches. Martial on the wing was the same he would just stop getting on the ball and lose confidence to attack his man and take creative risks.

I can see Ten Hag recommending we move him on if there’s interest in him.

Sancho is at his best when he's playing off teammates and can work triangles to get into space. Antony doesn't provide the threat of going down the line, so defenders can cheat to his left foot cutting inside. A RB that provides the overlap (and can cross once they get there) or play those one twos would get the best out of them.

Different to Pogba as we know what Sancho and Antony do well, and what their best position is (more Antony than Sancho admittedly.) The system doesn't need to be tailored to fit Sancho/Antony where it did with Pogba, and even then he didn't shine. A RB has also been on the list of needs for a while, not to specifically unlock our wide men.

Just don’t see it with him, he was poor again today.

I do think ETH is running out of patience with him. He may be able to be more of a number 10 going forward but I don’t see him being a wide player.

There was a flash of his brilliance with the move that led to the penalty but he has got to get more involved in the game.

Sancho isn't an out and out winger in the traditional sense, but I think ETH sees value in him if for no other reason than that he took the time/effort to find him a rehab assignment but didn't bother with the likes of Maguire or Martial.

Just seems so passive with no energy. I know he is all about close control and intricate play but even with the play leading the the penalty, he took an age to actually get the shot in.

I agree that ETH can probably see the potential but that bit of rehab to me felt like a bit of a last chance.

The club have spent a lot of money on Sancho and he's on big wages so there's probably extra incentives to try and make it work but his patience much be reaching the limit.

To me he just lacks the aggression required he seems very passive as a person he just coasts through games it doesn't seem to matter if he plays well or not you never see him lashing out in frustration.

With the other players I just think he knows that they're on the way out and they're stuck in their ways so he won't be able to change them.

Correct, at one point he as good as had an open goal to shoot at but the gap was closed by the time he got the shot off. That was disappointing.

He was so disappointing yesterday (he was not the only one, I know), and I have patiently waited for him to come good or show something on the pitch. I lost count of the number of times he lost possession with an under hit square pass, and then subsequently wound me up with his lazy attempts at trying to regain possession. Another that will be moved on, barring a miracle change in form.

Just doesn't fancy the fight and players like that don't last at Utd. Just don't think it's in his nature he's a nice boy and he lacks the ruthless streak on the pitch to be a top player. It might not sound nice but on the pitch you have to be nasty and he just isn't.

He's had enough chances now to see he's not going to work out at Utd, he we get rid of him is now the question?

Once again the answer will be at a significant financial loss.

Once again the answer will be at a significant financial loss.

Think at the end of this season anything above £45m would technically be profit on the books but the reports are he's on £350k a week so getting anyone to pay him anywhere near that is impossible. Unless he's desperate to move and willing to take a cut in wages where does he go?

I'm at the point where I'd rather stomach the financial loss than just see these players linger around the club.

This is part of the problem with current football at the top clubs the fees are now so high that if you get it wrong there's pretty much no way out until the contract expires.

I hate how passive he is, you just want him to go clatter into someone to show that he’s up for the fight.

He’s clearly got wonderful technical ability with his feet but he just doesn’t do much with that ability. Obviously he did at Dortmund but the step up is huge to the EPL. Kagawa and Mkhitaryan were similarly blessed with wonderful ability but also failed - I just see him at the moment going the way of those two.

I don’t think he’ll be sold in the summer but if he continues to underperform I cannot see how he has a long term future here.
