Personally, I don't see the problem in buying Toney as well. I think competition for places is very healthy, and also gives us another totally different option up top. Like I said before he has the ability in the air we are seriously lacking, and would help for set-plays, which we are horrific with. Zirkzee is quite tall, but doesn't have anywhere close to the level of heading ability as Toney. Hojlund in that reagrd is totally useless. It doesn’t require a front but my point is he would need to adapt to us and us to him, it might not fit if you starve him of chances like we do Hojlund. In a 2 you play a lot closer to your main team mate than you do in the 3 behind system and in Mbeumo he’s got a mate who does a lot of the channel runs for him. They’re a lethal frontline and I enjoy watching them.
I don’t favour Hojlund I just think he should be given a chance in his second full season to improve and show he’s got what it takes. There are a lot of good things about him but still big flaws to address to become a complete number 9. He’s got some competition now with Zirkzee the two of them will hopefully push each other to reach their potential.
Watched Toney loads of times even saw him make his professional debut so I know him very well. He is a very good striker and is good enough to play at the very top level I just don’t think we need him. At the start of the summer if it was £40m for Zirkzee or £50m for Toney I’d have said go for Toney but now we’ve signed Zirkzee we need to back him and trust him to deliver.
There are loads of pluses but the club have already made their move so we need to see how that plays out this season.
However I can also see your point. Some people are saying the same as you, that we should back our current two and give them equal playing time, and the support to grow. This also makes sense. The downside to this is that maybe neither of them score enough goals, or put in performances good enough to damage opposition and we could well end up in the same position as last season. With Toney, I feel we will have goals guaranteed.
But yeah, I'm not going to be heartbroken if it doesn't happen. I am still happy enough to see how it plays out, as it's only two games in and things in football can change very quickly.
