Ivan Toney

I don't think it ruins his chances of a top career at all. The FA have been very lenient. Especially with the timing of the ban. 10 weeks of the ban are going to be served before he'd have another game to play. He's going to miss half a season.

He'll probably still play more games than Martial next season. I'd be more than up for United going in for him this summer. Cut price deal and should probably have the market to ourselves.

Utd can't afford to wait we need that centre forward in on day one ready to go.

I don't think a player like Toney sits around as the number 2.

I think we can tick him straight off our list for a striker this summer. No point buying him and then not having him until January time. Then you’ll imagine he will have some time to get back up to game speed. Like jsp said we need someone in for the very first game of the season or we’re probably in for another difficult start to the season.

I don’t think he’ll leave Brentford now this summer, probably next I would imagine.

we get a forward, and we get Toney.

You could probably get him at a good price, Brentford can't have their main man out for half season and will need to buy.

We'd me mad to miss out on him because he's going to miss half a season. We aren't winning the league next season regardless there are too many holes to plug. Then we'd finally have the striker situation sorted for the next 4 years.

Now would probably be a good time to offer him a new deal and try to get him to sign it. He's got a deal to 2025 do they back him and say we'll pay you and extend your current deal to 2027 with a pay rise as he's only on £20k a week. I use that "only" term loosely but lets be honest he would easily earn 5 times that on his next deal.

I imagine football contracts include clauses that allow clubs to withdraw pay when you are suspended under these circumstances as you literally can't do your job as you can't even report for training.

Can see clubs trying in the January window when the ban is up.

I guess his options will depend on how he comes back will he be straight back to himself or will it knock his momentum.

Think that is exactly what they will do, was gonna suggest it but thought it was too wind-uppy for some ....

The lad will probably offer to pay 20% of his wages to a charity of the Chairmans choice and all will be well again in camp Brentford.

Wouldn't be surprised if one of the money no object clubs puts a cheeky £40/45m bid in for him this Summer ....

Not Newcastle but I think he'll end up there.

Is he the solution though? He’s good and I suppose you’ll never know how anyone makes the step up but I think if we broke the bank for Kane or Osimhen, we would have the next 4 years and beyond solved as well.

I wonder if Brentford can afford their main striker to be out for half a season, they need to sell to buy.

I think we need more than one stiker, Kane gets injured, then what. We get a Weghorst on loan again? I like Toney, I think he's good enough for a top 4 club.

My only concern with him is we play nothing like Brentford do, we will become a possession side under Ten Hag and move away from the quick counter attack. Can Toney play up top on his own with a number 10 (bruno) off him currently he plays in a front 2 who press and probe together playing in a direct style.

I really like Toney think he's a great player but I have doubts about how he'd fit into our style of playing going forward under Ten Hag.

To me he'd be the gamble option if we couldn't land Osihmen or Kane who I think are the obvious solutions to our problems.

I just don't think we can gamble of Rashford getting us through 6 months of next season before Toney can even play as it's also ruling him out of league cup and the group stage in Europe. If Utd finish top 4 I would actually like to make the knockout rounds of the champions league.

I can see the logic but he'd want the contract structured in a way that means he can get out and go cheap if they get relegated and he'll want to be paid as if he was at a top club. What's a top number 9 getting these days £100-120k a week? Can Brentford afford to give him that sort of deal.

Not sure they do need to sell to buy, they are a well run club, and they will probably just sign a striker on the cheap from one of the relegated clubs to do a job for them till Toney returns.

And the rest. He gets a move to United he's earning £250k plus.

Reports are they've already made a £25m bid for the Coventry striker.

He ain't in a position to make any demands on wages now, he wouldn't turn down doubling his wages which Brentford would be glad to pay knowing him signing a new contract would protect his value, and they'd recoup said wage increase plus some when they sell him the following Summer. You scratch my back ....

I think we would be stupid to no try and get him on the cheap. We need more than one striker.

swap Martial

I suspect unless they offered big wages to him including payment through his banned period he'd just sit tight and wait. Any contract he signs now needs to be him locking in a big sum that allows him to retire and sustain a very nice living for the next 50 years.

He's on £20k a week he'd be a fool to sign a deal with them that only doubles his wages unless it included a very low release clause that any club can activate in summer 2024. Double my money now but I want a £40m release clause.

Make your mind up, earlier you suggested he wouldn't be paid, and if he were to sit tight, and refuse a new contract that was good for Brentford and the lad himself he'd be a twat, pure and simple, and noted elsewhere. And he'll get his mega deal that should set him up financially for the foreseeable when he finally leaves Brentford.

Nonsense, he seems a decent lad, most that come into the game late are, and he would probably count his lucky stars if he were to get a wage increase when the club that gave him the chance of the big time would be justified reducing it significantly.

If he sits on his contract, sees out his ban, then asks to leave very few clubs would go anywhere near him, talent or not.

Why should Brentford pay him when he can’t play? I said Brentford probably have the option not to pay him and in my opinion they shouldn’t pay him unless he commits beyond his current deal. I’d use it as leverage as for the first time in these negotiations i would actually hold a few cards. At this point for Brentford it is about protecting his transfer value for when he inevitably leaves.

Nothing surprises me in football and the fact he’s had to fight his way back up to this point after the Newcastle move failed makes me think he would sit on his current deal and look for the biggest possible offer. Brentford didn’t give him a shot at the big time he helped get them promoted from the championship after signing from Peterborough who gave him a fresh start after a move to Newcastle didn’t work out.

when his ban ends he has 18 months on his deal clubs will go for him maybe not in January but by the summer if he bangs in some goals it’s 12 months. Clubs are ruthless.

Jeez, wish I hadn't mentioned it was a paltry fine now.

Might be worth a cheeky bid to get him on the cheap, but no way can he be our first choice if he's not available until Jan. We need a top striker locked up before the end of June.

More details have come out on his betting.

He backed Brentford to lose 13 times.

Surprised the ban isn't way longer with that taken in to account.

Wow, yeah that is well dodgy

Just said on the radio his sentence was reduced because he has been diagnosed with a gambling addiction and needs therapy

Was that before he signed for them or after?

To be fair to him he never bet on a game he was involved in. If that was the case then his integrity could definitely be severely questioned.

Hope he gets the help he needs because it is an addiction and can consume you just as much as any other addiction.

Yeah, more clarity, didn't bet on them to lose in games he was playing. Did bet on him scoring, and did give team news away.

Yeah of the 13 games for his club 11 of them were Newcastle to lose in games while he was out on loan.

Bet on himself to score a few times when he knew he was starting a match before the bookies did so got longer odds.

Is there enough self-reflection here? He would not be in this situation were it not for 232 breaches of betting rules, and would have been better placed discussing the involvement and impact of gambling/gambling companies in football.

Haven't listened to it yet but in the preview he basically says he admitted to a number of the charges to just bring the whole thing to a close either to just admit guilt and take the ban that prove your innocence.

Somehow we need to get the money to sign this guy.
Scored a hatrick in warm up match against Southampton U23 yesterday.
Not only do we need him. If he goes to Arsenal then it improves them massively and takes them even further away

I would be surprised if he is available to buy in January. Brentford are in a relegation battle and they have players at the AFCON.

I'm not sure it should be Arsenal we need to worry about sitting in 8th and being the second lowest scoring team in the league. We are being overtaken by Tottenham, Villa and even Westham? Chelsea and Wolves are only three points behind us. Arsenal are the last of our worries.

Toney is the sort of player we need though - a proven english striker. I love those.

He'll be 28 in a few weeks and all he's proven is he is a very naughty silly boy.
