Harry Maguire to leave?

I don't think anyone could blame him for refusing to walk away from the paypacket. You'd be crazy to leave a gauranteed £10m on the table and earn half the wages elsewhere.
If you or I were in that position, yeah, we'd stick around for the extra cash because going from thousandaires to multi-millionaires is life changing. For Maguire, it's a matter of going from a multi-millionaire to a slightly less multi-millionaire.

I've taken pay cuts to switch positions before because the new job's pay was still decent and the actual work was more enjoyable. I'd suspect Maguire would feel the same. If he has a good financial advisor who invests his money properly, he can make up the difference over time.

Harry Maguire 'not short of options' if he leaves Man Utd | Defender unhappy with treatment

This reads like it was partially written by his agent, and exactly how I would expect a professional footballer with some pride to react. Go to West Ham and play the match of your life twice a season when you face United.

He won't stay, not with his England spot up for grabs. And not when everyone knows the manager doesn't want him.

But we won't get much. 25m I'd guess

I'll have a sportsman's bet with y'all, I bet by the end of the 2023/24 season Maguire will be firmly established in the first-team again.

West Ham offer to take him on loan rejected by United.

Absolutely taking the p*ss they just banked 100m for Rice.

To be fair to West Ham, we have a reputation of being a soft touch. They might as well try. Having said that, I hope we told them in no uncertain terms to call back with a proper offer or we're blocking their number.

I suspect Utd told them where to stick that offer.

Given he will need to be replaced if he’s sold a loan makes absolutely zero sense.

He doesn't need replacing, we've got Luke Shaw don't you know ....

Don’t forget Bailly.

Maybe they’d think about using Mengi as the 4th choice.

I think ideally he’d want to replace Maguire with another younger left footed centre back to give him that balance so he doesnt need to move Shaw if Martinez isn’t around.

This. It's almost like ETH is trying to fix the problems that scuppered the end to last season. While Shaw can handle the LCB role, what we lost at LB wasn't worth the trade off.

Hopefully we will see a more polished version of Malacia next season but it feels like he’s trying his best to address the balance of the squad while also lifting the quality.

They could keep young Fernandez around next season after his loan at Preston to give extra competition/cover at left back next season.

You're on a roll today mate ....

Nope, like Tuanzebe before him, injuries have done for him, shame but ....

I'm hoping having a left-footed LCB is just a fad, the best partnerships i've seen at United going back to when Adam was a Lad didn't need one, nor did the partnership touted by many as the best pairing ever seen, Messrs Baresi and Messrs Maldini.

EDIT:
Looks like the only left-footed CB on the books at Academy/Reserve level, Bjorn Hardley, is off to join Zidane Iqbal at our unofficial feeder club in Holland, FC Utrecht.

I think it's become more important due to the shorter passing style that is the current way of playing you want you centre back to be opening up the angles to wide players not just turning back inside which a right footer will naturally do.

I don't think it's essential two quality centre backs can work it out as long as they're comfortable enough on the ball. Both Rio and Vidic were right footers as were Pique and Puyol and it didn't bother them.

As long as your happy tackling on your left side you can play left centre back pretty comfortably.

Fernandez seemed decent the few minutes I saw of him in the Leeds friendly.

If you know your way around a football, and have quick feet it shouldn't matter what foot you favour, and the very best defenders don't need to make tackles, oops just realised i'm in the Harry Maguire thread, as you were ....

West Ham makes a lot of sense for him. A club who had a poor league year but really focused on the run in Europe. A team in need of help having just lost their best player. It’s also a team where he can be a big fish and I think that’s the kind of player he is.

He’s not a bad player but he’s also not a top player. A team wanting to finish top half and maybe fight for a Europa League spot is I think his level.

He can do better than West Ham based on their league form last year but I think it would be a good move for him.

He did well on loan at Preston from what I picked up but it’s a big jump from championship to premier league.

My gut says it’s best he goes on loan and plays next season rather than being at Utd just in case we get a load of injuries.

To be determined.

The thread title was originally Harry Maguire to Chelsea but it’s kinda been expanded to all Maguire transfer rumours. And doesn’t look likely that he’s going to Chelsea so his destination is to be determined.

Ahhhh, probably explains why I couldn't find the Maguire to Chelsea thread

Ten Hag said nice things about Ronaldo and De Gea when he wanted them out as well.

So their manager wants the player, and they've made an initial lowball bid which always gets rejected, but now they're going to walk away and say oh well, we tried? Yeah, ok.

No point selling him for £20m - that would add basically no money back into the transfer pot and we would have lost a solid squad member. If we sold him for £30m then that would add a little extra to the transfer pot but not much.

We should be looking at £40m and tell anyone not willing to pay it to do one.
