Harry Maguire | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

If he agrees to take a pay cut then it may be valuable to have his character in the dressing room for another year or two, whilst Amorim builds his team.

If he is playing like he is playing now it is a good option to extend it by one year. he really has turned his game around from the fringes of the team. He did not moan or show that he is not interested in his body language and always tries his best and he is probably one player who gets on the team list at least for now as the Central defender in the back 3. Full credit to him.

I didn't see anything to warrant changing my mind on him.
Mix up between him and Martinez on the first

First one is on Martinez.

Maguire has the man in the centre, Martinez can see Isak behind him and should deal with him.

Deflection on the cross loops it over Maguire who’s in the right position.

A better last touch of the game would have been the cherry on top of the icing on the cake. Good game nonetheless with some great crunching tackles, one that was unjustly punished by Michael Oliver.

He was more likely to sky it anyway. I thought a second earlier and he would have probably scored. Nothing like the Bruce miss over the bar from the goal line though. I think this is the best defence line at the club now. Good choice to extend it for one year.

I hold up my hand. I thought he should have been sold under ETH but full credit to him that he did not throw out his toys like Rashford but fought for his place and won it at the centre.

Still think a professional footballer should hit the target but the pass made the chance harder than it needed to be.

Would have been a hell of a moment for him a last minute winner against Liverpool at Anfield.

It was so hard to adjust himself to that bobbling ball, the fact he still got a pretty true connection was good. A better ball and that is buried in the back of the net.

Think the ball bobbles at a pretty horrible time for him, it's a hard one to hit. I would have went for laces/power.

It's on of them that if you scuff the connection a bit it maybe trickles in if you hit it clean you'll probably hit it over.

Anyway looking at the replay Zirkzee was probably just offside.

Maguire was immense. He got his head and/or body to everything. The penalty decision was a ridiculous one.

I think Amorim is starting to figure out who he needs in this team and who he doesn’t.

Maguire is one he needs for sure, in a back three where he gets a little bit more protection he’s brilliant. A real leader back there.

Very good again at the centre of the 3.

Interested to see how it goes vs weaker sides where we have to be a bit more adventurous and expose him

It seems Maguire plays his best when he has a lot of responsibility this three at the back is good for him, when we have a more congested defence he seems to lose a bit of focus. Played well today.
.

Not sure his performances for England were good in a 3 and in a 2.

At the age he is now the 3 will suit him better especially in that central spot. As he’s not going to be asked to jump out and follow players into midfield or be racing down the channels.

I wonder if these performances might get him an England recall as we know Tuchel has played with a 3 before. Not sure that’s the answer for England given our attacking options.

Apparently he barely trained all week due to illness so putting in that shift was a hell of a slog.

I'm interested to see how that defence works in games like Southampton where they aren't going to be asked to defend as much can they still keep it secure at the back.

Maguire's performance against Arsenal made me feel like giving him a big hug and begging his forgiveness for all my previous less than complimentary comments. It was a truly immense performance. I now hope we see some more of that.

Not his best night.

Missed a great chance then beaten by a long ball for their equaliser.

The quality of his headers in both areas are polar opposites. When defending in his own area he gets his head to most balls, however, in the opposition penalty area, he very rarely hits the target.

I only saw the highlights/goals, I'm convinced as he goes up for that ball he gets a nudge in the back, the assistant is yards behind play and doesn't see it.
