Harry Maguire | Match Discussion Thread 2023/24

Understandably nervous at times yesterday, fairly solid and a great assist for the winner.

Haven’t fact checked it but apparently he’s won 16 of the last 17 Maguire has started.

Wouldn't surprise me Maguire started a lot of the cup/europa games last season.

Assume the only defeat would be the second leg against Sevilla.

He was good but he Is looking good against a very poor opponent.

They will do well to get 10 points this season.

Still got to do your job though and he won every header and sprayed some lovely passes to Rashford first half. Think he’s deserved a little run in the side but got to do this against City next week.

You do have to do your job but they played to his strengths he will eat straight long balls up all day and give him time and he can pick passes.

It was certainly better than we’ve seen from him in recent seasons and with the injuries he will get a run.

I‘d guess he will start midweek alongside Varane, the derby might be different if Reguilon is fit they may look to Lindelof and Varane at CB.

Has now won 16 of his last 17 he’s started for United. He’s got a 94% win ratio in United games in the last year. United are at 52% in games he doesn’t start.

You need to look at who those games were against. It means nothing.

As for yesterday, he played well.

But its games with the faster clever players he struggles. Who turn him or who are fast

Balls over the top he can get his noggin on is his thing

Doesn't matter who we pick where, city are going to maul us. Midfield, up front and defence, nowhere near good enough for City.
Bruno giving the ball back every time we get it.

We won't have the ball much, and this team seems clueless with the ball.

Derby matches are strange but yeah if they turn up and play well they will hammer us but City have been off it a little bit lately so who knows.

These games can turn quickly on moments what you can’t afford to do is gift them goals.

I personally wouldn’t start Bruno in the derby but he’s the captain so dropping him is unlikely.

Course it means something we have potential to drop points against every team we play.

It’s not like we only lose to top teams. We’ve lost to Palace and Galatasary this season. A 94% win ratio over a calendar year starting 17 games if a great record regardless especially with this teams potential to drop points everywhere they go.

if you read on, my point is, the crappier teams who lob the ball forward is bread and butter for him.

So who he played against is relevant.

This weekend, if he plays, I wager a few mistakes again

Another good performance tonight and a fantastic header for the goal.

Got to give him so much credit for his resilience to come back from some disgusting abuse he has suffered.

Yet again another win. Another big moment. Instead people are too busy chastising other players or praising part time footballers.

Not a surprise some names are missing from this thread tonight.

Well this is a forum of opinions.

Who are the part time footballers?

I guess that's at me and Eriksen

I said he did ok against Sheffield, and he did ok last night.

But it was just a performave you expect, why would you need special praise for that? He didn't do anything out of this world. He was no better than Varane, yet I don't see people on that thread.

It says it all that we have to praise a normal performance, against a poor team, albeit one we made look good - same for Sheffield

Maguire has done ok this season and the last two outings have been solid performances against relatively poor opposition.

His win record is a good one but with context it is a little less impressive.

I think he's getting back to somewhere near his best.

He still got away with one last night his weak tackle on the halfway line allowed a counter attack that they hit the post with. Those are the fine margins at this level last night his luck was in and his mistake wasn't punished and he then gets his redemption moment with the header.

I don't see him ever getting his starting spot back full time but he's showing why there's plenty of clubs who should be looking to bring him in as there's still a good player there.

Had 1 awkward moment first half but other than that he was solid enough.

Don’t think any of the goals can be put down to him.

Brilliant today. After it looked like he would go off in the first few seconds, he recovered and thought he was MOTM.

Yeah he was MOTM

Playing well at the moment.

Yeah, another solid performance. He’s been one of United’s better performers in the last month.

Yep real credit to him for dusting himself down and ignoring the haters. Automatic pick at the moment at centre back.

We’ve played teams that play to his strength.

Play direct to him and he will eat it up all day but when teams start moving the ball quickly around your box that is where he struggles.

Confidence seems to be returning which is good for everyone.

I don't rate him, but he seems to play for the badge, which is more than most

I agree. We know he is not what we need to progress, however, when he does play, he does give 100% and never shys away like some of his teammates.
