Ultimately I hope things are better cos I really rate EtH and think he's a cracking manager who will develop the youth....I don't want to waste his talent as a manager and have him sacked in year cos the usual suspects can't put a shift in

The usual suspects would be the crowd if he was to be sacked. And now it's time to shut up and let the manager do his work. You ended up with Ragnick. You saw how bad it can get.

So I'm comparison to Chelsea who are doing good work we've both signed a CB and a LB and they've signed a winger who probably doesn't start for them. They lost their main striker and 2 of their main 3 defenders. But they're doing well and we are doing terribly.

Hasn't the United way always been to use youth too? Surely you see the potential of Iqbal and Garnacho?

I think you're more concerned than the fans themselves.
We didn't urgently need a LB or a CB.
What we need is a holding midfielder and we failed to get one yet.

You completely missed the point. But that doesn't surprise me.

I spent years being told Mourinho and Ole are the problem. Therefore we've got a new manager let's see this magic work and prove it wasn't the players. Rich was a prime candidate for the managers not the players being the issue.

Yeah, both managers have excelled since leaving United.

Both managers were an issue as they assembled the bulk of this squad not many of these boys were around pre Mourinho Shaw, Martial, De Gea and Rashford are off the top of my head the only ones who came into the side before Mourinho took over.

Mourinho was past his best a complete diversion to any of the good work that LVG had done and Ole was just out of his depth. We've gone for the rip it up and start again approach again that's going to take at least 12 months to bed in even more if we don't sign the right players.

I do think player power had grown way to strong at the club because of the constant change of management and a lack of leadership from those above and the constant reward of new contracts to players that don't perform to the highest of standards on and off the pitch.

That is probably the big challenge for ETH to get a grip of the club again and build a serious winning culture in that dressing room. To do that he's going to need to clear out the rest of the bluffers who can't perform consistently week after week.

The problem, whoever is responsible, is buying the wrong players, buying players too intersted in boostng their pay packet and their insta numbers. And in Ronaldo's case too interested in themselves.

Last season was the worst season as a united fan for me, I was alive when we went down, but only 3 so that doesn't count. I have never seen such a pitiful self serving group of players.

First glimpses looks like ETH won't stand for it. He won't turn it around this season whatever, so if we can't get the players he wants, let's wait. Because this group should be better than they showed themselves last season. I'm not expecting top 4 this year.

I have no problem with waiting for the right players rather than panic buying.

Thing is wind the clock back 12 months and there was a pretty positive outlook on Utd. Fans liked most of the players and things were on the up but last summer they got it massively wrong. While I didn't think the manager was good enough I was happy enough with the signings being made and I know I bang on about it but the mistake was not getting rid of players.

Ole kept to many players he over promised to them and under delivered in terms of playing time and a lot of them got seriously p*ssed off as a result. That creates a toxic culture in a dressing room and it cost him his job and it resulted in our season going down the toilet. I think a lack of experience from Ole maybe didn't see the problem keeping all these players could cause. He didn't need Mata or Lingard last season but he kept both. They should have let Cavani go when they signed Ronaldo. Not saying that would have saved his job but I think 3 less headaches to deal with might have made his life easier as they are 3 big popular players in that dressing room.

That team were never going to fight for an interim manager there were 10 players in that squad that knew they were leaving this summer why bother trying to push for top 4. For the record by the end of the season Ronaldo to me looked like the only one really giving it everything he had to get us top 4.

Point is that if the managers weren't good enough like everyone constantly banged the drum about then we don't know how good these players can be with a proper manager in charge of them. There must be a reason we paid £50m for Fred. We know Sancho and Rashford have top players inside of them. We know Shaw, Maguire and Varane can play at a high level we've seen it. We know Donny has excelled under ETH before.

There's not a need to be overly pessimistic before ETH has got going. Surely the massive improvement comes from the manager not just new signings if the step up is as big as everyone was banging on about then we should be optimistic to start the season.

I might come across as negative but in my defence this thread was about FDJ and even the most fanatic of us must admit its been a bit of a summer saga.

However I do feel positive particularly about EtH and if he can develop Garnacho, Zidane, Savage and Hannibal and at the same time clamp down on the bad influences then we could have a very successful season, maybe not with silverware but certainly from a squad development point of view.

The De Jong stuff doesn't bother me. We can't really do much we've agreed a fee with Barcelona. But until they settle on a deal with De Jong he isn't moving. We'll have other stuff going on in the background and I'm sure if it comes to it we'll just go out and get Tielemans.

The manager is the best signing the club has made in years in my opinion but only if he's given the backing to make the big decisions.

What seemed to be the problem under Mourinho was the club wouldn't back his big decisions over players he could see where a problem for him. They wouldn't sell Pogba, they wouldn't sell Martial and they wouldn't sell Shaw. All 3 of them we've seen the evidence are players that you can't rely on week in week out to perform at a high level. These decisions allowed the players to become bigger than the manager and it all implodes again back to square one with Ole.

There will be a point with ETH where he'll make big decisions about some of the current players it might be De Gea, it might be Maguire or it might be Bruno it could be anyone might even be Martinez. But if he says I'm sorry this guy doesn't fit our system and he needs to go then the club have to be prepared to move that player on and back his judgement.

Pep did it at City moved on huge names from the club because they didn't fit in anymore, Klopp had to do it to with some players who cost the club big money. We have to back this guys judgement now. The people above him who've hired him need to just be sharper and making sure they can get him what he wants.

On the subject of De Jong what we saw with Klopp at Liverpool in some windows was he was willing to wait for the right person. They tried to get Van Dijk in the summer but couldn't get it done he was under big pressure to buy a centre back he said no we will wait for Van Dijk as he is the right guy. I think this is how ETH sees De Jong and it's why he's clinging on for as long as he has to in order to try and get him. If it doesn't happen and he stays at Barca I wouldn't rule out him going back for him in January.

The only slight difference in my comparison is Van Dijk wanted to go to Liverpool but Southampton wouldn't sell in our case Barca are happy to sell but we don't really know for sure that the player wants to come to us.

Yep there is plenty to be positive about at the moment. That positivity could come crashing down to earth come 4pm on Sunday but we shall see!

The youngsters coming through are definitely cause for optimism. Some of the bad influences have gone from the dressing room as well. While we would have liked to have got FDJ over the line, I am pretty positive going into the new season.

Look I really don't want to rain any parades here I don't. I'm just curious as to why there's so much positivity going in to this season? I'm not knocking it I'm just curious.

For the attention of the WUM above:

For the same reason Accrington Stanley and Hamilton Academical fans do, because that's what fans do, or should, or what's the point.

It's a new season with a fresh slate for everyone. Under a new manager with modern ideas and a set attacking system in his mind that he wants to play.

A lot of the 'bad eggs' have been cleared out and a number of youngsters have excelled on the preseason tour.

No one is talking about titles or silverware. But moving forwards, seeing entertaining football. I expect us to finish top 4. You don't but we'll see. But I definitely expect it to be a lot more fun the last the 12 months have been.

Also it's just a buzz that the premier League is back. We are fans of football and love watching football so it's return puts our weekends back to normal.

New season new manager new faces etc etc.

There's at least the optimism that we will actually be watching a team that's giving everything not that absolute mess we watched at the end of last season.

It's going to be a tough watch at times this season isn't all going to be an upwards trend but hopefully we've hit the bottom last season now we can at least start climbing back up.

Top 4 race isn't what we were all used to a decade ago but it's a realistic ambition for this season so lets see how we get on. To get it we'll need a few more guys to come in and we'll need a few breaks to go our way through the season but that's football.

If I wasn't positive I wouldn't have started supporting United in 1985 when it would have been easier to follow the successful scousers....I saw something in Robbo that captured me...that guy would run through a brick wall and break a leg for a team not capable of winning much in the way of trophies...if it all falls to shit I will have a whinge and be back again for more next season...looking for the positivity and hope for better

Silly question really. If fans can’t get excited about a new season starting then what’s the point of being a fan? This is the time to be positive and optimistic!

I‘d knock 10m off our last offer to Barca.

I hope De Jong stays to be honest would be hilarious seeing Lewendowski sitting in the stands every week.

The beauty is even if all those players can’t play Barcelona still have to play them.

Frenkie should just refuse to move for the lols.

Buying players when you can’t even register them - got to believe the club is being run by clowns!

You are really starting to get on my tits. Go bash some other team you also don't support, you Wum.
You need to lighten up man. A team chases a player for 13 weeks... Sets that player as their priority and does nothing else at a position of desperate almost crisis level need and you can't see the funny side of that?

Yeah because you know whose likely to be the man in the know about De Jong? Harry Redknapp.

I'm sure he's got much closer ties to De Jong than ETH does

Ok... but I was referring to the situation and how it could play out. Not that Redknapp is in the absolute know.

You should know what Arry is like by now, he'll be saying one thing to the press on his front doorstep whilst pushing Sondra out the backdoor to put £10,000 on de Jong to sign for United
