Euro 2024 Group C: Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia, England

It was his error that led to the throw in that led to the goal gave the ball away trying to dribble out of defence.

He was caught on the ball high up 3 times. 1 led to a goal, 1 led to a good Pickford save and the other he got back for and made a recovery challenge.
Can't blame Guehi for the goal. We had the ball back after the throw-in only for Kane to gift it back to Denmark with a rubbish pass attempt.

Yeah to blame Guehi for their goal is a huge stretch. It was just a wonderful strike.

If you look at the ratings from most media outlets, Guehi has been one of the standout performers in a sea of mediocrity.

It was still Guehis mistake that led to the ball being that high up the pitch as he as the last defender tried to dribble around a man which is unforgivable at this level.

Or simply an inept manager?
Well that too! I think he’s done a really good job overall and that shouldn’t be forgotten. I just think at this point he’s out of his depth. He now has a very very talented team and I don’t think he knows how to manage that.

The problem is, as England have had before, the Manager is too scared to leave out top players for teh balance of the team.

he's been linked heavily, I'm sure you now that. And Ashworth loves him, so I guess it has been discussed in their review

I highly doubt Southgate will get a massive job when he leaves England. Probably some mid to lower table team in the EPL maybe where his next job will be.

He's the highest paid international manager. I don't think club football and the daily grind is for him. He's earned enough money think he'll end up as a well paid pundit.

I know he speaks well and intelligently but he’d be horrible as a pundit. I agree that’s what he’ll probably end up doing but I just think he’ll be awful. He’s got no personality.

Everyone jumping on the Phillips comment but it is true. However, it was a silly thing for the manager to say, can’t be nice to hear for the players in the squad that you are still wishing you had a guy who for 3 years has barely kicked a ball.

I’ve seen very little of the two games as I’m away but I think he has to look to make changes for the 3rd game and be brave with some big calls. He’s done this before in major tournaments where in the second game we’ve struggled he’s made big calls to change the line up.

England are not going to be a possession and high pressing side it’s too late in the day to adopt that.

From what I have seen TAA is not the guy in central midfield I’d personally bring in Wharton and try and bring a bit more bite to the midfield and from the bits I’ve seen of him his short passing game is tidy enough. Not sure Mainoo/Rice is a partnership that works as neither really wants to be the holder.

The 3 behind the striker isn’t working I’d bring in Gordon for Foden or Saka. It’s harsh but probably Foden he just doesnt turn up enough and make the difference for England enough. We need someone who’s a bit more direct and runs in behind I think Gordon can give us that threat.

If Shaw is going to feature at all at this tournament he has to start this game and get through at least an hour. If he isn’t fit enough to start just send him home.

Reality is we’ve gone into this tournament in bad shape after 4 pretty poor friendly performances, no one is really in great form for England at the moment. It just looks like a new team that’s starting qualifying and finding its shape rather than one who’ve come through it and are ready for the tournament.

It needs to click quickly or they’ll be home very soon.

Shaw back in training. I suspect he’ll get some sub minutes against Slovenia with the eye on him starting the first knockout game.

I think you have to start him and see how long he can go for in this game, you can't be taking risks in knockout games.

He needs to get an hour under his belt then show before the knockout games that he's ready to last 90 minutes or close to it.

it doesn't sound like Southgate is actually going to change anything apart from Gallagher for TAA.

Pointless

I efin hope ETH can sort something out, because I cannot abide the thought of Southgate at united

Yeah Gallagher for TAA isn’t going to really change the way we play. I like Gallagher but he isn’t really going to bring any invention to the team which is what we have sorely been lacking in the first two games.

Mainoo or Wharton would be better bets for me. Also I would drop one of Foden or Saka and get some real width into the team. It’s all very congested in the attacking areas with Foden, Bellingham and Kane when dropping deep operating all in similar areas.

I know there has been a whole lot of hype over this England squad being the ‘golden generation’ but it’s very far from that. The hype has been way over the top, we have some very good players but far better England squads have struggle to make an impact in a major tournament

I'm pretty confident that Southgate will never be Man Utd manager. Just because he's mates with a few of the people in charge doesn't mean they're going to put him in charge if they did there would be a massive fan backlash as I don't think I've met a single Utd fan who wants him in charge.

I'm ok with the change being limited to 1 player.

I think it's the right change from the bits I've seen TAA needs to come out and Gallagher who finished the season really well at Chelsea is fine to put in personally I'd have gone for Wharton.

I don't mind Gallagher starting, its the fact that he thinks that will solve it bothers me.

We need to get Palmer Gordon or both on

Southgate won't take risks and if he don't take risks with this squad he never will ,should have blew both teams away in our first 2 games , but we score and sit back like tomorrow will play 2 holding midfielders against Slovenia.

So who are you dropping for them two?

Shaw isn’t fit for this game, just send him home.

Edit - the thing I read earlier has now disappeared so might have been done by some fake news.

I think binning your entire attack after 2 games is probably a step beyond being brave.

Now we are officially through I think we have to try something different.

Kane won't be dropped.

So how about

Pickford

---Walker Stones Konsa---

Trent ------ Rice ------Sake

Foden Bellingham

Kane Watkins

I think we're moving to many players out of position to try and get the best XI players on the pitch. Saka is not a wing back, Trent is not a wing back, Kane/Watkins have not played as a front 2.

I think they need to stick to the 4-2-3-1 system for this game as we come up against better sides it may need to become more 4-3-3 with Bellingham dropping back into more of a midfield role.

I would go for 2 changes from the line up we've used so far.

TAA out for a proper centre midfield player is the obvious move, we have to control that area of the pitch much better. I would go for Wharton over Gallagher as to me he looks like a more natural holding midfield player but I've no problem giving any of Gallagher,Mainoo or Wharton a go.
Foden out for Gordon. Foden is an amazing player but it's just not working with him in the side at the moment he needs to step out of the line up for now and be used as a sub.

Without Shaw Saka is our best option at LB. We are playing a player out of position there regardless. It also allows you to then put Foden in to his position. Saka has more experience at LB than Trippier.

I'd also stick to the 4-2-3-1 but do think Kane needs to be dropped if he's going to consistently just drop deep and destroy any outlet. He was deeper than Bellingham in the last game.

I know Rashford has has a shocking season but surely he would be a useful weapon coming on in games standing on the shoulders of defenders with players like Bellingham playing those passes for him.

Even Sterling would have been useful in that aspect.

Saka hasn't played that position for years and he certainly didn't build his reputation and earn his spot in the squad playing that position. To me it's another square peg in a round hole and from what I've heard Saka is the only one in the front 4 who's actually had a good game, I heard he played well vs Serbia. If they wanted to try Saka as a left back they should have tried it in one of the 4 friendly games going in.

Until Shaw is fit I think we're just stuck with the Trippier problem, I think he made a mistake in the squad selection that he's now stuck with they should have called up Mitchell as a specialist left back and left out Gomez. I think Gordon in front of Trippier will help as he'll keep the width a bit more on the left rather than come inside early to get involved in play he likes to receive the ball wide before coming in.

Kane shouldn't be dropped he needs to be told to stay up the pitch like he did in the first game wait for the ball rather than come deep. If he doesn't listen then you have to think about dropping him.

I don't think it's a complete rip it up and start from scratch job make 2 changes to try and get a bit of a better balance and hope that fixes some issues.

I don't see how you can continue with Trippier. He's been woefully bad and it's what's caused a lot of our issues where we become narrow and easy to stop because they only need to stop the right side of the pitch knowing we can't hurt sides down the left.

Saka was playing at LB and it is where he made his name and made himself undroppable before moving forwards. Whilst playing at LB he was topping the Arsenal assist.

He played left back throughout youth level England. As I said he's got 10 times the experience of Trippier at left back. He is less of a square peg there than Trippier whose proven he cannot play the role.

Hopefully Shaw is back for the weekend games. But we've been that bad that I almost do think it's hit the in case of emergency button otherwise we aren't getting out of the last 16 and will be sent home immediately.

Our average XG is 0.72. Lower than Sheff Utds last season. The second lowest in the tournament after Scotland.

I get all of that but I'd change the forward first rather than the full back put Gordon in on the left as he's probably the best option and say you need to give us that threat by staying wide.

What they really need is Shaw to be fit enough to start games going forward and by the time the quarter finals hit should we get that far he needs to be able to play the full 90 minutes. For that to happen he needs to start tonight and play at least the first 45-60 minutes.

If Shaw is fit to start tonight you maybe give Foden another chance to see how they gel.

If Shaw isn't fit to start tonight maybe they need to consider the radical change option of either switching to Saka or playing Gomez instead of Trippier because his performances aren't good enough. Gomez played a lot of games at left back for Liverpool last season which makes you wonder why he wasn't given the nod ahead of Trippier. I'm not a huge Gomez fan but he's a decent player so maybe that's the quick fix solution that doesn't require you moving everyone around.
