Euro 2024: England Thread

I think that is harsh on Rooney he was an unbelievable player and had he not been injured probably would have helped England win euro 2004 at only 18 years old.

All those things you listed Rooney was doing at the same age and he carried on doing them for pretty much a decade.

This isn't a slight on Bellingham he's a great player and like Rooney he's fearless.
Watch some Madrid games if you get the chance

Football was different back then less foreign players and less European club football so we'll never really know how well these lads would have done against the best from around the world. The players coming through now are mixing it with the best from around the world every week in club football and not only holding their own but standing out.

Le Tissier I always felt was a tad over rated and his reluctance to leave Southampton and play at a higher level probably cost him that chance. Didn't want to leave his comfort zone which is fine and his decision to make.

I grew up with the golden generation they could have won a tournament especially Euro 2004 but the breaks went against us couldn't hold our nerve in penalty shoot outs.

I don't think Southgate will get anywhere near the Utd job and he shouldn't until he proves himself in the club game. Being a great international manager doesn't make you a great club manager.

Me: My middle name is Clifford
@jsp: No it isn't, and i'll tell you why it isn't

I don't agree, Rooney was a a great young player, but raw, powerful.

Bellingham has the lot. close control, skill, shooting, passing, vision, he can control a game at aged 20. That control, vision andpass for Kanes goal....wow

I don't think we've ever seen a young English player this good at 20.

Gazza says Hi

Gazza says Hi
Gazza is my favourite England player, which is why I purposely put in, at 20.

I thinks it's difficult to find a more composed skillfull footballer at 20. I've watched for Madrid, he is the fulcrum of that team already

What credentials did Southgate have? He's probably our second best manager of all time.
So what do you do with Saka? A player who's been quality for both club and country in the last 12 months?

Southgate got the job, iirc, because of the work he'd done with the England U21s and the unexpected sacking of Allardyce. Otherwise, don't think he'd have got a sniff at the job because of his lack of credentials. Has Potter done enough to justify the gamble?

If Saka is good enough, he'll be able to fit into whatever system is built round those better players.

trying to shoe horn Saka, Grealish, Foden, rashford etc into the same team won't work.

The manager just needs to pick the best combination, even that does mean Saka. eg, is on the bench.

I agree with ODog, Southgate was in the right place at the right time. I think a better manager would have already won something with the players he's had at his disposal.

The only "big" club stupid enough to take him would be united.

Southgate from memory was reluctant to take the job he stepped in as an interim because of the Allardyce mess and eventually agreed to take it. It may be that they see Lee Carsley who's the current U21 manager as the guy to take over after Southgate.

Potter I think has got a decent CV he's managed in europe and done well in the premier league so he'd certainly be a name on the list but if we're limiting it to just English managers it's a bloody short list.

I think the answer is seeing if a midfield 3 of Foden/Bellingham/Rice could work if they were given a bit of time which allows you to keep Saka on the right. I had hoped we might see this trialled a bit through the qualifying maybe it's something he'll use once qualification is sorted.

I think the flaw in that system is neither Foden or Bellingham are players you want to put to much defensive restriction on as they are both so creative and Saka I think rightly deserves to be in their class.

The England fans were signing Harry Maguire's name at fulltime, but I doubt it has been reported, wonder why?

they reported on radio 5, also that he gets great support from united fans home and away

He's always had good support from the England away fans, tends to be at Wembley where he's got a bit of stick.

As for Utd think he's had plenty of support from the regular crowds but there's been a few d*ckheads at friendlies who've booed him.

He's done himself no favours by turning down that move to West Ham but I think he's now reached a point where he needs to move abroad.

YAY more international football the absolute pinnacle of football ;)

England are playing Australia in a friendly and Italy in a euro qualifier

Squad has been announced
  • Goalkeepers: Sam Johnstone (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal).
  • Defenders: Levi Colwill (Chelsea), Lewis Dunk (Brighton), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), Fikayi Tomori (AC Milan), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Kyle Walker (Manchester City).
  • Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Jordan Henderson (Al-Ettifaq), Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City), Declan Rice (Arsenal).
  • Forwards: Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), James Maddison (Tottenham), Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).
No natural left back in the squad I guess it'll be Trippier at left back for these games Mitchell from Palace maybe a little unlucky not to be called up same for Burn from Newcastle although Southgate has suggested he might play Colwill there.

Chilwell, Eze and Wilson drop out from the last squad due to injury and there are doubts over Saka joining the squad. My guess would be if Saka drops out then Anthony Gordon might get a call up for the senior team.

Saka has withdrawn due to injury and will not be replaced.

Why the hell have England accepted the offer to play Australia? Surely they could have come up with more suitable opposition .....

And if they couldn't why not curry favour with the club bosses and just have a couple of training days, it's not as though the Euro 2024 qualifiers are taxing and the squad are desperate for gametime is it?

Gotta keep the Aussie Prime Minister sweet with trade deals in mind I suppose ....

I believe FIFA forces you to play friendlies in these gaps to stop teams gaming the ranking system so if you don’t have qualifiers you have to arrange a friendly game.

Same reason why Wales have a friendly tonight Vs Gibraltar.

Bellingham is just something else, what a talent. Looks like his brother is starting to make strides as well this season.

I feel like we need to go to the source and sign their Dad. Then we can start to create a farm of little Bellinghams. That’s how we can get back on top!

yeah, I've watched a fair bit of Madrid this season, he's gone in there and owned it, with all that pressure for playing for Madrid, it's like he's the main man already.

Yeah, think you might need the Mum too. Good plan, though.

They probably haven't got a better chance of winning a major tournament than they do here.

Big nations like Germany, Netherlands and Italy are all over the place. Belgium look to be at the end of their cycle the only other nation that can really compare man to man with our squad is France. They will be the tournament favourites but we saw at the world cup the gap between us and them isn't huge.

I think maybe the World Cup was a bit to soon for Bellingham but he's growing in stature and it's becoming his team now along with Kane in those attacking positions. Out wide we've got incredible options Saka/Rashford/Foden/Grealish give you different types of threats.

Final 2 qualifiers see England take on Malta and North Macedonia

This was the original squad Southgate named

Goalkeepers: Sam Johnstone (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

Defenders: Levi Colwill (Chelsea), Lewis Dunk (Brighton), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Kyle Walker (Manchester City)

Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Jordan Henderson (Al-Ettifaq), Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City), Declan Rice (Arsenal)

Forwards: Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), James Maddison (Tottenham), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa), Callum Wilson (Newcastle)

Since naming the squad Dunk, Maddison and Wilson have dropped out injured with Ezri Konsa, Rico Lewis and Cole Palmer called up as replacements.

There is doubts over Bellingham joining up with the squad he missed Real Madrid's game at the weekend through injury.

Bellingham and Colwill have now withdrawn with no replacements to be called up.

Good to see Konsa get a call up. When Mings was constantly getting picked, I always thought they were picking the wrong Villa defender.

Thought they might give Ward-Prowse a recall he's been in good form since the move to West Ham but he seems to be out of the managers thoughts now.

I find it astounding that Ward-Prowse has only 11 caps. I thought he was worthy of a recall with him being in brilliant for for WHU but I think his ship may have sailed even though he’s only 29. He’s definitely worthy of a place ahead of Phillips and Henderson for me.

Different players think he likes the physical side of what Henderson and Phillips offer rather than the technical side with Ward-Prowse.

He was around the squad long enough Southgate must feel he isn’t quite the right fit for his squad.

Routine win on Friday night 2-0 final game tonight think we need to win it to secure a place in pot 1 for the group stage draw.

Fairly dull 1-1 draw to close out the group.

Didn't see the whole game but sounds like Rico Lewis impressed and Marc Geuhi has been doing well he looks like he'll be the number 3 centre back who will step in should either Stones or Maguire be injured.

Not sure the Trent in midfield thing really work for England.

Grealish & Rashford disappointed in the games neither really staking a claim for that left side spot on current form but a lot can change in 6 months.

Going on current form Foden has to start for England at this tournament.

He is unplayable at the moment.

Our attack looks pretty awesome to be fair

Kane, Foden, Saka, Bellingham.

Bang in Rice and Maddison
